NIHL 1 Results Sat 06/01 Blackburn Hawks 5 Deeside Dragons 7 Hull Jets 6 Widnes Wild 3 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Billingham Stars 6
The Jets come to Nottingham having maintained their remarkable home run of wins this season and will be looking to achieving a four point weekend as they face the Lions this evening. This should prove an exciting encounter with the Lions wanting to get their new year off to a positive start and the Jets determined to scupper the home team’s ambitions. Face off is at 7.20pm. On a sad note it is Mike Urquart’s funeral on Monday 8th January and all at the Nottingham Club’s thoughts are with Laura, Jessica, and Jack as they bid farewell to husband, father, and for us hockey fans of long standing a never to be forgotten part of ice hockey’s evolution in Nottingham.

NIHL 1 Results Sun 07/01 Deeside Dragons 6 Blackburn Hawks 3 Solihull Barons 6 Widnes Wild 5 O/T Whitley Warriors 5 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Nottingham Lions 3 Hull Jets 4 O/T
The Jets take the points in a game of real turnarounds with the first period tied 0-0. In the second the Lions turned up the pressure on their opponents ending the period up 3-1. The third saw the Jets fight back taking the period 0-2 and into overtime. As with the Lions up at Hull when it came to overtime the Jets did precisely what they did on home ice snatching the game winning goal. A bit of a sickener for the Lions but the chances were there tonight to put this game out of touch for the visitors but their depth of experience really made the difference on the night. Time to lick the wounds and move on to the next game. Scorers: Tristan Grimshaw 1, Zak Yokoyama 1, James Mather 1 Luca Sheldon faced 50 shots in the game. MOM Tristan Grimshaw

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 13/01 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Hull Jets v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons
Sun 14/01 Billingham Stars v Whitley Warriors Deeside Dragons v Widnes Wild Nottingham Lions v Blackburn Hawks (Face Off 7.20pm)
The game against the Hawks will be the first meeting of these two on the Lions home ice having faced them once already this season up in Blackburn where the home team took the points in an 8-4 game. Although there has been a high level of acrimony between these two on the ice and between respective management and coaching teams this appears to have thankfully settled over a couple of seasons. The Hawks are sitting comfortably mid table with a couple of games in hand over Whitley Warriors just one place above the Hawks so the points take on a greater significance therefore a lot to play for from their angle. The Lions have, as with every game in this division, have their work cut out to get something out of this game but they are more than capable of making life for the Hawks more difficult if they commit 100% each shift and for the whole of the game. The Hawks do have strength and experience in depth so yet another uphill battle for our guys but bags of experience on offer for the youngsters. Face off 7.20 pm.

NIHL 1 Last night’s results Hull Jets 4 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Widnes Wild 5 Solihull Barons 3
Last night’s game between Blackburn Hawks and Deeside Dragons did not go ahead due to ongoing investigations into a recent incident between a Hawks and.a Dragons player that led to some medical intervention for the Hawks player. I believe that the EIHA are involved in the investigation into this incident. Tonight’s game between the Lions and the Hawks is not affected and will go ahead as scheduled with a 7.20pm face off.

NIHL 1 tonight’s results
Awaiting two of the the three results.
Nottingham Lions 2 Blackburn Hawks 3
The Lions put up a solid performance tonight against a Hawks team with a great depth of experience and with enough opportunities to get a result but it was not to be as has occurred in a number of games this season our guys just failed to capitalise on those opportunities. The Lions took the first period 1-0 but conceded a goal in the second to even up the score but in the third the Hawks grabbed the initiative pushing on to a 1-3 lead before the Lions hit back to score their second goal. The Lions did hit the iron work with the Hawks keeper well beaten but that’s a reflection of how a number of games have gone for our guys. The Lions did put in a full shift tonight and deserved better than they got. Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2 MOM Isaac Ballinger (netminder)

NIHL 1 Remaining results from last night:
Billingham Stars 6 Whitley Warriors 1 Deeside Dragons 2 Widnes Wild 5
A rare four pointer this season for the Wild as they topple both the Barons and the Dragons plus yet another strong performance from top of the league Stars who comfortably saw off the Warriors.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 20/01 Solihull Barons v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Blackburn Hawks Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions (5.30pm Face Off)
Sun 21/01 Blackburn Hawks v Billingham Stars Sheffield Scimitars v Solihull Barons Whitley Warriors v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Hull Jets
The Lions only game of the weekend could not be tougher as they travel to meet top of the league and potential champions the Billingham Stars. The Lions have not yet managed to get anything from the three games they have played against the Stars this season having lost both of the home games and the last away game so anything that shows a tightening up of the score line with this truly formidable outfit will be very welcome. The Stars have proved to have really dominated all comers this season having shown probably the greatest improvement of any club in the league of the last couple of seasons having brought together a very experienced squad and it certainly shows. No doubt the Lions will give 100% and give the Stars as good a game as is possible even with the odds stacked well and truly against them but go there knowing that every game played is at part of the learning curve no matter how tough the opposition.

NIHL 1 Tonight’s results
Solihull Barons 8 Deeside Dragons 4 Widnes Wild 5 Blackburn Hawks 7 Billingham Stars 8 Nottingham Lions 2
The Lions worked the Stars harder than the score indicates with the Stars coach stating that the Lions put up a gritty performance in the first and second periods before the Stars made their experience count by finishing with a solid third period to wrap up the game. The Lions although losing the first period 3-0 actually outshot the stars 11-16 but failed to get the rewards that their efforts deserved. In the second period the Lions dominated and finished with a 1-1 tie but with the Stars now being 4-1 up. The third period started with the Lions on a five minute powerplay but conceded a short handed goal and the Stars now with the advantage and with the Lions now losing the impetus in the game they went on to concede a further three goals with an 8-2 final score. The Lions certainly made a game of it tonight and this was freely admitted by the Billingham bench so no points for the Lions but the guys left Billingham having made a point that was readily recognised by the opposition. MOM Nick Martin The only goal scorer that I am aware of tonight was Tyler Somerton, but once I have information ref the other scorer I will post it.

Sun 28/01 Solihull Barons 4 Blackburn Hawks 6 Billingham Stars 12 Hull Jets 3
Hull have achieved most of their success this season on home ice and pushed the top team the Stars at Hull but obviously came up against a rampant Stars team when they next met on Billingham’s home ice. A good first season for the outfit from Hull without a doubt. Blackburn dealt comfortably with the Barons home and away.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend

Sun 04/02 Billingham Stars v Widnes Wild Blackburn Hawks v Hull Jets Solihull Barons v Deeside Dragons Nottingham Lions v Sheffield Scimitars (Face Off 7.20pm)
The Lions have a double header against the Scimitars this weekend and these games will bring to an end the series of games against Sheffield this season in the league with the past two games being one win for each team. Back in September the Scimitars visited Nottingham and went home with the points in a narrow 3-4 game. The Lions did the return game bringing the points back home in yet another tight affair 3-5. Sheffield like Nottingham are battlers and both exhibit a tendency to be in the bottom half of the league as both clubs attempt to develop a squad generally from within their own junior system and with tight financial constraints that do not allow for paid players. Both teams do have a few victories to their name with the Scimitars recently beating the Solihull Barons and the Lions beating Widnes Wild. A win over any of the teams in NIHL 1 teams is always very welcome.

A very welcome two points brought home from Ice Sheffield last night and a game where the Lions took all three periods. Refreshing to note that nine players were involved in the six goals scored. For the first time in a while I had sight of a game sheet and on this occasion name goal scorers and assists, a bit more work for me but I do like to name players that also played their part when goals are scored. Game stats against Scimitars are as follows: Period Scores: 0-2/0-1/2-3 Zak Yokoyama 4+0, Tyler Somerton 1+2, Tristan Grimshaw 1+0, Kieran Gibbs 0+2, Robert Oxley 0+2, Toby Fisher 0+1, Owen Davis 0+1, Luca Sheldon 0+1, James Mather 0+1 SOG: 27-44 MOM: Daniel Martin
The Lions go again tonight against the Scimitars on home ice with the face off at 7.20pm so with the Panthers away at Coventry all Panthers fans will be very welcome at the Nottingham Lions v the Sheffield Scimitars game tonight.

The Lions made it a four point weekend with this second defeat of the Scimitars but this was no walk over as the Sheffield team set about putting right what they possibly perceived as a rather lack lustre performance against the Lions on home ice last night. In the first period the Scimitars really upped their game as they put real pressure on the Lions scoring two goals within the first eight minutes with the Lions managing to hit back with their first goal at around nineteen minutes to end the first 1-2. Ten minutes into the second the Lions brought the game level and took the lead at 38.46 finishing the period 3-2. In the third the Lions kept up the pressure but the Scimitars held out until at 56.01 the Lions scored their fourth goal and then saw out the game. Both teams tonight put in a full 60 minutes in a game that at times could have swung either way but the Lions kept their shape and stuck to the game plan to earn the points tonight.
Period Scores: 1-2/2-0/1-0 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 3+0, Tyler Somerton 1+1, Tristan Grimshaw 0+1, Luke Thomas 0+1 SOG: 30-24 MOM: Tyler Somerton

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 10/02 Sheffield Scimitars v Whitley Warriors
Sun 11/02 Deeside Dragons v Billingham Stars Solihull Barons v Whitley Warriors Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars Nottingham Lions v Blackburn Hawks ( Face Off 7.20pm)
The Lions are up against the Hawks who are presently nicely placed third in the league but with little hope of overcoming the Billingham Stars who are dominating the league this season. The best really that the Hawks can achieve is runner up but to do that they need to overcome second place Solihull Barons who hold a 6 point lead over the Hawks at present. The Hawks have only one game in hand over the Barons so need the points desperately to stand any chance of advancement. The Lions played their last home game against the Hawks in January where they missed out in a 2-3 thriller a game where the Lions gave their higher flying opponents a bit of a scare in this very tight game. The Hawks will be looking to remedy that situation and will definitely come out with the intention to make their depth of experience tell and dominate the game. Yet another game where the Lions will need to up the momentum and attempt to nullify whatever the Hawks throw at them. Half term for the youngsters next week so why not give them a slightly later night and bring them along to a Lions game and any Panthers fans are also welcome following on from the Panthers v Clan game earlier in the day. Face off is at 7.20pm.

Sun 11/02 Deeside Dragons 2 Billingham Stars 5 Solihull Barons 4 Whitley Warriors 1 Widnes Wild 7 Sheffield Scimitars 6 O/T Nottingham Lions 3 Blackburn Hawks 4
As in January the Lions pushed third placed Blackburn all the way in the game tonight but in yet another tight finish the home team missed out by the odd goal. In the first period the Lions kept the Hawks pretty well under control and grabbed the only goal in that first to go into the break 1-0. The second was almost a carbon copy of the first but the pressure from the Hawks was building and it was they that eventually broke through to even the score by the end of the period. Into the third and the Hawks hit the Lions hard scoring another couple of goals and looked relatively comfortable but the Lions hit back to even the score at 3-3. The game moved on to it’s close with it looking to go to overtime but as the last couple of minutes of the game we’re entered the Hawks snatched the game winning goal. Yet again a sterling performance by the guys who certainly deserved something from this one but it was not to be. Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2, Toby Fisher 1 SOG: 35-35 MOM: Luke Birchnall

Sun 18/02 Deeside Dragons v Hull Jets Solihull Barons v Billingham Stars Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Widnes Wild v Nottingham Lions (Face Off 5.30pm)
The Lions travel to Widnes for their final league meeting this season with the Wild holding the advantage having won two of the three times these two have met. The Wild took the points in the first game with an O/T home win 4-3 in September. In October the Lions got the win over the Wild with a 4-1 victory in Nottingham but the next time they met here in Nottingham the Wild bagged a 2-5 win. It would be a real achievement for the Lions if they could gain that elusive away win before the league season draws to a close.

A great result for the Lions as they travelled to Widnes and came back with the points having achieved a result that will have certainly shocked the home supporters. It has been several seasons since the Lions took both points having earlier in this season achieved an overtime loss and taking just the one point but even that was better than had been achieved for a good while. The other thing of interest, that I have noted is that over the four games against the Wild the Lions have taken five of the possible maximum of eight points over the series of games this season and scored 15 goals against the Wild’s 12. So a very positive season against a usually well funded outfit up at Widnes. A good spread of scorers in this game with a special mention for 16yr old Luke Birchnall who scored his first goal for the Lions and added an assist plus young Tyler Somerton who was named MOM. An interesting comment from the Wild’s Coach who said that his team were struggling to keep pace with the speed of the Lions, mind you some of these kids can shift a bit. Period Scores: 1-2/0-2/1-1 Scorers: Tyler Somerton 1+2, Zak Yokoyama 1+2, Dan Martin 1+1, Luke Birchnall 1+1, James Mather 1+0, Toby Fisher 0+1, Robert Oxley 0+1 SOG: 24-38 MOM: Tyler Somerton

NIHL1 Games this weekend
Sat 24/02 Blackburn Hawks v Billingham Stars
Sun 25/02 Billingham Stars v Blackburn Hawks Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars
A rather sparse schedule in NIHL 1 this weekend but the game on Saturday looks to be the most interesting as the Stars lost away at Solihull last weekend but I can’t see the Stars losing at home. The Wild will be looking to come back from the loss last weekend to the Lions but to be fair on their day the Scimitars have given a very good account of themselves and got the odd win under their belts so Widnes better be up for this game.

NIHL 1 Weekend Results
Sat 23/02 Blackburn Hawks 13 Billingham Stars 4
Sun 24/02 Billingham Stars 2 Blackburn Hawks 8 Widnes Wild 3 Sheffield Scimitars 9
This weekends games between Billingham and Blackburn were a two leg series to decide the first silverware of the season and the Hawks absolutely destroyed the league leaders with an emphatic 21 goals to 6 over the two legs. Billingham are suffering with injuries to key players but even they could not have envisaged a hammering on this scale. The Wild came unstuck once again as the Scimitars left the Widnes team pointless in yet another home game. Two Sunday home games in a row, their fans will not be at all happy and that’s for sure, but maybe not as upset as the Billingham fans?
