NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 4/11 Hull Jets v Widnes Wild Nottingham Lions v Deeside Dragons (Face Off:12.00)
Sun 5/11 Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Whitley Warriors Widnes Wild v Hull Jets Deeside Dragons v Nottingham Lions (Face Off: 5.15 pm)
The Lions recommence their season with a home game on the arena ice against the Deeside Dragons with the return game at Deeside on Sunday. It goes without saying the home game is going to be an amazingly tough one in a number of ways not only from the formidable Dragons but following the tragic events of the past week that have shook the ice hockey world to it’s core. To also play on the Panthers home ice on the day of remembrance of a young and talented player so tragically taken in the game that proved to be his life is going to be hard going for all of the Lions team and management. Adam Johnson will be remembered and honoured of that there is no doubt in what form that will take I have no knowledge at this time.
From the playing angle and the game against the Dragons it would be true to say this is a massive uphill task for our guys as the last visit to Nottingham in October we were definitely outplayed and outscored as the Dragons took the points 4-10. They have power and experience in great depth and have just added their second import in Jakub Hajek to join Petr Valusiak. Of the Brits, well where do you start, messrs Parsons, McKinney,Dickinson, Lovell, Wainwright, Kennedy, and more. The Deeside team arrive tomorrow having won their last 5 games and having put 30 goals past their opponents, that is the challenge for the Lions to face let’s hope for a tighter finish in this one.
The Lions are to raffle a signed and framed Sam Herr shirt from the Continental Cup campaign. The funds raised will initially be used to provide protective equipment including neck guards for all players who do not currently have this vital piece of equipment. Any remaining monies will be donated to the Panthers official fund raiser.
A profoundly sad for all involved in ice hockey and a sad day on which to return to league action for the Lions, and that’s for sure.

NIHL1 weekend results
Sat 04/11 Hull Jets 4 Widnes Wild 2 Nottingham Lions 3 Deeside Dragons 10
Sun 05/11 Blackburn Hawks 7 Solihull Barons 3 Sheffield Scimitars 4 Whitley Warriors 3 (S/O) Widnes Wild 0 Hull Jets 5 Deeside Dragons 6 Nottingham Lions 0
As expected Deeside Dragons proved too much to handle although the Lions manage 39 shots on the Deeside goal at home and 27 in the away game. Spoke briefly to Matt Bradbury regarding both results over the weekend and he felt that his predominantly young team coped very well against a superior opposition brimming with experience. Playing on Saturday given recent tragic events he felt his guys might have suffered somewhat but instead, although being very aware of all that was occurring that day, they stuck to the task in front of them extremely well. It was a long trip over to Deeside on Sunday but again he felt the Lions performed well and gained a great deal of experience over the whole weekend although conceding the points, but to a formidable team in the Dragons.
Period Scores Saturday: 0-4/3-5/0-1 Period Scores Sunday: 0-0/3-0/3-0 Scorers Saturday: Tristan Grimshaw 1, Tyler Somerton 1, Zak Yokoyama 1

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 11/23 Billingham Stars v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons
Sun 12/23 Deeside Dragons v Hull Jets Sheffield Scimitars v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Billingham Stars (Face Off 7.20pm)
Billingham Stars are currently leading the division and are certainly looking very confident and comfortable at the moment but both Deeside and Blackburn have picked up results of late and sit only two points behind the league leader therefore the Stars have got to keep producing the points to retain that slim lead. The Lions have struggled of late against the top teams and might feel it's about time a couple of points came their way but against the Stars they will have it all to do,and more to achieve that aim. I feel sure the guys will give it their best shot and being a predominantly young team will gain a great deal experientially from all games against the top teams but the odd point would be very welcome

NIHL1 Weekend results:
Sat 11/11 Billingham Stars 5 Sheffield Scimitars 0 Widnes Wild 3 Solihull Barons 4
Sun 12/11 Deeside Dragons 4 Hull Jets 1 Sheffield Scimitars 3 Widnes Wild 4 (S/O) Whitley Warriors 3 Blackburn Hawks 2 Nottingham Lions 2 Billingham Stars 5
The Lions came up against top of the shop in the Billingham Stars and after a game in which the Lions actually won a period they were eventually beaten by the goals scored in the final period including a late empty net goal. A generally better showing against a superior opposition but not enough to gain anything in the end but the Lions did not collapse under the type of pressure teams such as the Stars can inflict on teams at the lower end of the league. Period scores: 0-1/2-1/0-3 (including the eng) Scorers of the Lions goals unavailable, for now.

Hate to steal Humbuckers thunder, but Jesus what is wrong at the EIHA?! Official statement from the Nottingham Lions: www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0tCZwxLTcEY4Mep1uu3m3me7bqFYR3sZ6mMXWzgdsLggUNUwd53nMHyAnGtJatP8Nl&id=100054422143158&paipv=0&eav=AfZLC2YtlmP9J8GpOmzpcSix4LzwqbWPfUB41D68XDcnBGw08LNzZmViyv3431d13Uk&_rdr***CLUB STATEMENT*** Nottingham Ice Hockey Club (NIHC) has become aware that certain details concerning an incident during the Widnes Wild vs. Nottingham Lions 1 game on the 17th September 2023, have been circulated on social media. We aim to clarify some aspects of this incident and provide an update on subsequent developments. NIHC can confirm that the Chairman of the EIHA entered the Nottingham Lions changing room post game and issued threats to one of our players while physically restraining him. Additionally, NIHC confirms that one of our players experienced racist remarks during the game, and the referee was duly informed. Following the incident, the following actions transpired: - On the 21st September 2023, NIHC lodged a formal complaint with Ice Hockey UK due to perceived conflicts of interest within the EIHA. - Ice Hockey UK, however, informed us on the 22nd September that they couldn't handle the matter and redirected us to the Vice Chairman of the EIHA, the NIHC then forwarded the complaint on the 22nd September to the Vice Chairman of the EIHA who acknowledged receipt of the complaint. - On the 9th October, NIHC sought an update from the EIHA, having heard nothing since filing the complaint. - The EIHA responded on the 11th October, stating that the case was being forwarded to an independent body for investigation. - On the 7th November, NIHC contacted the EIHA once more, expressing concern over the lack of communication from both the EIHA and the independent body handling the investigation. Regarding the racist remarks, NIHC reported the incident to the EIHA DOPS for investigation. Despite initial statements and a brief interview with the affected player, neither the player nor the club has received any further communication from the EIHA or EIHA DOPS. It is crucial to note that this is not the first instance of reporting racism to the EIHA without resolution. As of today 15th November 2023 the NIHC can confirm that they still have not heard anything back from the EIHA on any of the above complaints. Statement from the EIHA that the chairman has resigned immediately.

Hi kievthegreat, absolutely no thunder to steal I think I ran out of that commodity sometime ago.I was aware of the situation but I tend to tread carefully with the internal stuff and politics unless I get really teed off and then I post.I am very aware of the shambles exhibited by the EIHA on occasions allied to a some very poor management style that can appear over dictatorial towards some whilst leniency occuring with some who I would have difficulty in warming to at the best of times. Anyway
NIHL 1 games this weekend:
Sat 18/11 Hull Jets v Whitley Warriors
Sun 19/11 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Whitley Warriors v Hull Jets Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions (Face Off: 5.30pm)
The Lions take the relatively short trip over to the Hobs Moat rink to face the Barons. Always a tough old venue this one but hopefully our guys can play a tight game against a team they seldom overcome, but, on a positive note there was recently one of the most encouraging results when the Barons visited Nottingham and the Lions, at last, took a point in a 6-7 O/T loss. It will be a lot more difficult at the Hobs Moat to grab a point or even two but you just never know hockey is a funny old game.

NIHL 1 Weekend results (to date)
Sat 18/11 Hull Jets 3 Whitley Warriors 4 (S/O)
Sun 19/11 Solihull Barons 6 Nottingham Lions 1
In tonight's game the Lions overall workrate was looking good and stuck to the game plan, due to this they were able to stay well within striking distance of the opposition throughout the first two periods. In the third the impetus appeared to have got lost somewhat possibly resulting in a greater goal margin than was anticipated given the Lions earlier efforts in this game. Period Scores: 1-0/2-1/3-0 Goal Scorer: Toby Fisher
Awaiting results from tonight's other games.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:

Sun 26/11 Billingham Stars v Widnes Wild Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks Solihull Barons v Sheffield Scimitars Whitley Warriors v Nottingham Lions
A very challenging weekend for the Lions and a bit of an expensive outing for the players as they head up to the north east for the rearranged game against Billingham Stars on Saturday and a Sunday trip to Hillheads to play the WHitley Warriors. There might be some shuffling of the squad I would think to cover both of these games as this would prove a formidable commitment for some of the players both in time and in financial terms. Whatever the games will be played and that's for sure.

NIHL 1 Results: Sat 25/11 Blackburn Hawks 5 Whitley Warriors 1 Hull Jets 3 Solihull Barons 6 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Deeside Dragons 5 Billingham Stars 7 Nottingham Lions 1
The Lions went to Billingham knowing that it was a game where they would battle to gain anything as the top of the league Stars do not give much away and certainly not this season. The Lions kept the game tight for the first two periods but then struggled to hold the Stars in the third period. Credit to the guys they held very well for the first forty minutes and that was quite a task against the depth of experience they were up against and, on their home ice. Period scores: 1-0/2-1/4-0 The Lions only goal was scored by Zak Yokoyama The MOM went deservedly to netminder Luca Sheldon

Second trip over the weekend up north east this time to play Whitley Warriors. I have ascertained that the Lions went short benched to top team Billingham who trounced Widnes 12-2 tonight so that certainly puts into perspective Lions 7-1 loss on Saturday. Up at Hillheads the Lions came up short with a 8-3 loss but again I am unaware of bench strength for this game. Always difficult places to go and over the years the Lions have always found games up in the north east hard going to say the least.

Managed to catch up with Matt Bradbury Head Coach of the Lions for his views on the weekend games up in the north east against Billingham and Whitley. Matt said that you are always up against it with both of these teams as they are full of very experienced hockey players that have been on the circuit for a number of years so getting anything out of these games is always a bonus. On Saturday against top of the league Billingham the Lions went with 9 forwards and 5 defence and with a short bench he felt the Lions did as well as they could but felt the score possibly did not reflect the amount of effort his team put in against the Stars but they are a team that take some stopping. At Whitley Matt had 15 out players, with once again, 9 forwards and 6 defence. Whitley Warriors have a rather up and down season but once again with the experience they have available they are still a formidable outfit on their night and Matt felt the guys dealt well with the pressure and he said that the Lions did restrict the Warriors to 46 shots over the game whilst putting 40 shots on the Whitley net. A negative result wise over the weekend but the effort put in by the team combined with two long journeys and with a late night return to Nottingham. Matt still noted a number of positives with the youngsters who are gradually coming to terms with the transition from junior to senior ice hockey. It has to be also remembered that many of the Lions are still committed to their junior teams and the team are also attempting to integrate into the Lions 1 team players from the Lions 2 squad. Obviously there is a lot happening that generally goes unnoticed even by myself who only produce comments on each Lions game.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 02/12 Billingham Stars v Solihull Barons
Sun 03/12 Solihull Barons v Hull Jets Whitley Warriors v Billingham Stars Widnes Wild v Deeside Dragons Blackburn Hawks v Nottingham Lions
The Lions hit the road once more as they travel to meet the Blackburn Hawks. The most recent history between our two clubs on and off the ice has, to put it mildly, been decidedly unpleasant but it is hoped that these past issues stay firmly in the past and do not flare once again. The last time the Lions went to play the Hawks they certainly received a fairly heated reception. The Hawks season has seen them within striking distance of the top three with 10 wins and 5 losses and they have caused the odd upset having beaten top of the league Billingham Stars this season. So the Lions, as always, have it all to do to snatch a result on Sunday but as they say hope on occasions springs eternal, this just might happen? Face off: 6.00pm.

The Blackburn Hawks move up to third place in the league and within two points of second place with this win over the Lions tonight. The Lions did keep the period scores relatively tight but to be honest it was going to be a formidable task to even take a period against the Hawks especially on their home ice. Had the chance, blimey twice in just a week, to speak with Matt Bradbury about his team’s performance against the Hawks. He went to Blackburn with 14 out players, 8 forwards and 6 defence, and with two of his defence men icing at 16 yrs of age. In the game he felt there were plenty of opportunities to make the game a much tighter affair and throughout kept the Hawks second and third lines well controlled as they only collected one goal in the game. The damage was inflicted by their lethal first line who collected the other seven goals between them. Lots of positives and had the Lions finishing been sharper, as he said, it would have proved a closer result. As Issac and Luca were unavailable in the nets for the Lions up stepped what might be classed as the third and fourth choice netminders Deacon Hardy and Oliver Goodman and they did a creditable job on the night against certainly a massively experienced and strong first line providing few opportunities to the Hawks other two lines. Blackburn have put together a strong squad this year but I certainly do not think strong enough to unseat the Billingham Stars unless injuries alter the balance in their favour. Period scores: 3-2/3-1/2-1 SOG: 40-34 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 1, and the first three goal haul for Tyler Somerton MOM: Tyler Somerton

NIHL 1 Games this weekend: Sat 09.12 Hull Jets v Nottingham Lions (Face off 5.30pm) Widnes Wild v Whitley Warriors
Sun 10/12 Billingham Stars v Blackburn Hawks Deeside Dragons v Sheffield Scimitars Whitley Warriors v Solihull Barons Nottingham Lions v Widnes Wild (Face off 7.20pm)
The Lions travel to Hull today to meet the Jets for the first time in several years, why several years, well the Jets had spent virtually all of their lives in the NIHL 2 and having achieved great success in that league moved up to NIHL 1 at the commencement of this season. It would be true to say that the Jets have adjusted very well particularly when playing at home having won 6 of their 7 wins on home ice and having beaten Billingham, Blackburn, and Deeside so we have an opponent that is definitely a power at home. This team does have some real depth and experience due to players returning to their home club after spending a number of seasons playing in the higher divisions. On Sunday, at last, we have a home game against the Widnes Wild with our record this season being a win for Widnes at home and a win for the Lions when the Wild came to Nottingham. This is a game that is hard to call but the Lions, if they dig deep, could take the points. The record against the Wild over the years has favoured the Widnes team but the win by the Lions earlier this season will have hopefully broken the pattern of the previous seasons. Face off against the Jets: 5.30pm Face off against the Wild: 7.20p

The Lions certainly gave the Jets a game tonight and we’re unfortunate not to get the result as the game ended with the Jets scoring the crucial overtime goal. As was mentioned earlier the Jets are a strong home team so our guys going up their and putting them under pressure was credit to the Lions team. The Lions did manage to win two periods.in the game. RIP Mike Urquart Today we lost a man who I and many others remember as Panthers #22 playing on defence in the old barn. When Mike's hockey career came to an end he went into coaching and became a much respected coach passing on so much to the up and coming players who went on to play at the highest level both here and abroad. Under his tutorage of the young players the development of ice hockey moved onto another plain and this showed over the years. I remember him moving on to Guidford achieving so much there but he always had deep feelings for Nottingham and kept his finger firmly on the pulse of deveolpments here. When a post within the Junior Development Programme here in Nottingham became available Mike was the goto bloke for the job and he duly made the move. He was the heart of the Junior System for a number of years advising, guiding and supporting the coaches within the programme and he certainly made a positive contribution and of that there can be no doubt. He worked within the National Programmes coaching both the GB Womens Team and GB Students Team as they attended the World Student Winter Games (the Universiade) supporting Matt Bradbury as Head Coach to the teams. I do know that Matt and Mike developed a close relationship and on a personal level, having met Mike,I found him to be exceptionally personable and very friendly with a great sense of humour. I will always remember when I was talking about how to advance in the sport and he said develop a Canadian accent as it opens doors closed to many others within ice hockey. He did have this wry twinkle in his eye when he said this to me and that summed up the man. I along with many others will miss Mike and for ice hockey in Nottingham this nigh on brings to a close a profoundly sad and tragic year. My condolences to Laura and the family, a real hockey family because as some may not know Laura and the kids all played ice hockey at a very high level. I am sure there will be a tribute to Mike from the Lions and all of the Junior Development Programme and at other hockey venues today.

NIHL 1 Results tonight:
Billingham Stars 4 Blackburn Hawks 2 Deeside Dragons 4 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Whitley Warriors 4 Solihull Barons 7 Nottingham Lions 2 Widnes Wild 5
There was a one minute silence before the game tonight for Mike Urquart who died earlier today.
The Lions dominated for much of tonight's game but the old Widnes Wild bogey struck once more as the Wild were outshot and outplayed but ended up with the prize of the two points. How did that happen well they turned up with a young netminder who was absolutely up for the game and frustrated the hell out of the Nottingham team as he stopped 38 of the 40 shots on his net whilst we took 25 shots and conceded the game. Admitted we have two young netminders who were up until the beginning of the season probably out of the reckoning but the loss of the Lions 1 and 2 choice netminders meant that the youngsters had to be thrown into games out of necessity and the guys have given of their best considering their lack of bigger game experience, and they will improve given time. Good to see Connor Glossop back in the Lions strip once again and he put in a good performance that won him MOM deservedly tonight. Period Scores: 0-1/0-2/2-2 (1 eng) Scorers: Connor Glossop and Zak Yokoyama SOG: 40-25 Special mention for Zak Yokoyama who although not scoring in last night's game at Hull did collect 3 assists. As I do not have sight of game sheets the assists are missed and I only get goal scorers unfortunately. Gone are the days when all of the stats were ready and available.

Sun 17/12 Blackburn Hawks v Whitley Warriors Solihull Barons v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Billingham Stars Deeside Dragonsv Nottingham Lions (Face off: 5.15pm
The Lions face our old friends from Down the road as the Solihull Barons play the Lions on the arena ice. Absolutely no luck against the Barons to date who are having their best season for a number of years and are presently in second place in the league. The Lions travel over to Wales on Sunday to meet the Deeside Dragons who are presently in fifth position in the league and within one point of third spot so all for the Welsh outfit to play for in this game. Deeside are particularly strong on home ice and have a good number of very vocal team supporters. Two particularly tough games for our guys with the odds firmly with the teams fighting for top honours and not wanting to offer any quarter to their opposition. Hopefully the Lions will play a tight game giving as little as possible to both challengers this weekend.

The Lions squad were missing four key players tonight three from the defence and one forward. The Barons dominated the first period but did not crush the defiant home team who, although starting slowly, managed to hold out reasonably well. The Lions picked up the pace in the second and third periods but not sufficiently to turn the game to their advantage with the Barons taking the points and strengthening their second place in the league, for now. NIHL 1 Tonight’s results: Blackburn Hawks 4 Whitley Warriors 2 Solihull Barons 3 Sheffield Scimitars 2 (OT) Widnes Wild 1 Billingham Stars 7 Deeside Dragons 8 Nottingham Lions 2
The Lions travelled to Deeside with a short and very young bench strength therefore they were really going to be up against it facing a very experienced full strength Dragons team. Five of the Lions 16yr olds were playing their third game of the weekend after playing against the Barons on Saturday before travelling to play for the u18s in Manchester so those guys put in some shifts and that’s for certain. Overall this was a great effort by the team and they stuck to the task with the Dragons really applying the pressure throughout the game. The shots on goal speak for itself as the Dragons put 47 shots on the Lions net whilst generating only 19 shots themselves. The two goals in the game for the Lions came from Toby Fisher and a first senior goal for 16 yr old Nick Martin who also collected MOM. The guys now have a rest over Christmas. Merry Christmas and a happy new year from all involved with the Nottingham Lions. Period scores: 3-0/3-2/2-0

WELCOME BACK and a Happy New Year
NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 06/01 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Hull Jets v Widnes Wild Sheffield Scimitars v Billingham Stars
Sun 07/01 Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks Solihull Barons v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Sheffield Scimitars Nottingham Lions v Hull Jets (Face Off 7.20pm)
The Lions opening game of 2024 sees the return of the Hull Jets who last visited a number of seasons ago when both the Lions and the Jets were in NIHL 2. In those days it might be true to say that the Lions definitely had the edge over the Jets but since the Hull side moved up this season they have really caused a few upsets and grabbed a good few points in the process. The Jets are a different unit than in the past as they have picked up a number of well experienced players and that has shown in the results up to Christmas. The Lions have travelled to Hull and came away with a point in an overtime 5-4 loss and to be quite honest that result did surprise me as on home ice the Jets have taken some notable scalps having toppled all of the top teams during the early part of the season with home ice becoming a real stronghold. After the Christmas break it will be interesting to see how our guys measure up to the task before them on home ice this Sunday.
