Buy that man a pint. Agree with the lot, absolutely bang on. Especially the elements around the clubs outward facing marketing being good where someone else facilitates it, it's absolutely spot on. edit to add... As if by magic Greg's anger at the website is illustrated perfectly. From today's gems: "Meanwhile tickets have gone on sale for the Challenge Cup game against Coventry at the Arena on November 20th. The game is not included in the seaston ticket. ST locations are being held until November 8th. If season ticlket holders buy on-line and have the match 'added' to their ST cards there will be no handling charge unless pruchasing additional paper tickets." Pathetic.

Sad but true. Good article.

It's very sad but that's been the case for years in Edinburgh. Well at least the since I've been living up here anyway.
And I can't see it changing anytime soon. I'm sure if people new about it they would go.
Scott Neil should take a few pointers from Braehead on marketing. At least there getting adverts out on the radio etc and have the smart cars.
If Edinburgh don't market themselves how are they going to get sponsors?

You can take a horse to water.... and all that.
Where is all the money the league is getting being spent? is it being spent? Surely help with simple marketing for teams like Caps is a priority? maybe not?

I dont think the venue helps to be honest,i mean i know a lot of hockey fans love Murrayfield for it's 'character' but it wont attract new fans, an old, cold and slightly run down rink will not appeal to the casual fan.

I disagree... there are plenty of old/lesser rinks that can and have attracted new fans. How else did our old barn stay almost full year on year? It wasn't all down to long-standing fans... plenty of turnover, old fans leaving (for whatever reason) and new fans (like myself) coming in. Make the game on the ice exciting (of which Edinburgh are more than capable), make the experience off the ice interesting/entertaining (of which any team is capable) and market it! Advertise, leaflet, announce, shout out, broadcast, hell - knock on bloody doors if necessary! (That last appears to be where the Caps fall down). Any perceived faults of the facility can be overcome. Maybe they don't have the funds... maybe they don't have the will or the nous... I really don't know. But for the good of the league, for the good of the rest of us - I for one would be happy to see the EIHL as an organisation (if that's not abusing the word!) put some money and effort into specifically marketing Edinburgh. The vast potential there is almost completely untapped. I don't care if that sounds like special treatment... so what? We sure as hell don't need it... even the most Panthers/Moran/Black-hater has to admit they have done a superior job of marketing the club. Time for everyone else to follow suit, even if it means giving them a leg-up. Hey... here's a thought. Offer Gary Moran the job of EIHL Marketing Director... and set him loose! Show the rest of them how it's done. Bet that would cause a few blood pressures to skyrocket! ;D

absolutley spot on shaggy! Capital city of Scotland & such a fantastic place to go shame they don't see the potential themselves! Great idea about Gary Moran being 'EIHL Marketing Director'

I love how simple it is for teams to get people though the doors. A few leaflets, a couple of radio ads - its that simple.
I remember when I lived in Edinburgh the Murrayfield...whatever they were called American Football team had a huge demonstration out on Princes Street for a weekend, thousands and thousands of people saw it. They had loads of publicity in the press. But their attendances didnt improve.
But a couple of flyers and I'm sure half of Edinburgh will be there.

Might as well not bother then Rangers and just slowly go out of business..... Hey - I'm sure the flyers will work better than the american football team's work. And I'm sure that they have not tried anything that has already been suggested. They'll be fine...

They had loads of publicity in the press. But their attendances didnt improve. But a couple of flyers and I'm sure half of Edinburgh will be there. I think what people are saying rangers is that at least some effort is needed. You walk around Edinburgh and people look at your Panthers shirt / badge with a blank look, they have no idea what it is let alone that Edinburgh has a hockey team itself. It's the same in Manchester, no promotion in the city centre whatsoever. Good marketing works, that's why companies invest huge amounts in it and it's why the big brands who don't always offer the best products stay at the top of the profit charts. I do agree that it's not as easy as a few flyers but they could do so much more in Murrayfield, it's a great place to watch hockey. Of course the smaller clubs could just continue to bleat about being poor relations as i see Mr O'Connor is, yet again, today. Funny how Braehead seem to be managing it isn't it. I was sat in a Thai restaurant on the Friday night on Argyle Street, couple behind me were talking about hockey, how much they enjoyed it and how they'd love to go to Madison Square Garden to see a game. They have people out flyering in the city centre, adverts on the underground, pretty girls in Braehead outfits drumming up support. What it comes down to is some people are running good businesses which they have the business acumen to grow, others just fancy running a hockey club and hide behind the veil of 'oh but we've stuck by this sinking ship for so long, we are the saviours'. Garbage. Sad as it is I agree with Jono's article 100%, to me Edinburgh just feel like a club seeing out their time, I can't see them being here next season.

Sadly I think that any club where the away fans outnumber the home fans (considerably in Sundays case), days are pretty much numbered unless somebody steps in and does something. Effort is needed, and while something such as a leaflet campaign is hardly going to put bums on seats, at least it is some kind of effort to let the people know there is actually a team in the city!!!
Braehead do seem to be doing exceptionally well for a first season team, and I can see no reason why they can't be in the mix for honours with a big fanbase in a few years time if things keep moving forward. That said, I was stopped and questioned about my jersey by someone in the shopping centre, who didn't have a clue there was a rink/arena there!
Both these cities could be potentially fantastic hockey cities with a bit of savvy marketing applied, it's such a shame that, probably in Edinburghs case, it's a bit too late for that now.

Would Braehead's apparent success in attracting people to come to a game by getting out there and advertising be down to having NB as a part owner who want his business interest to reap dividends and is prepared to do something about it.
