Stupid idea?
I don't think it's that stupid. I'd change my name to Mobilx if they paid me enough! ;D

Dear me, if I get asked who we're playing I don't say the Vipers, I say Newcastle... stupid.
I like having to town name in the club name because it gives the club identity and tells people where they're from.
Mobilx Vipers?? Where are they from?? Doesn't really give people a clue does it?

They will still be known as Newcastle Vipers as Spuzz said, as long as we remain NOTTINGHAM Panthers and not become East Midlands Panthers i will still be happy

Can I have a guess? .... err ... Newcastle? Thats because we know where they are from but what if it was new people? I'm pretty sure most new people in Newcastle will be pretty well aware that it's their local ice hockey team. In my experience most people I know in Nottingham have known what I meant when I said "Panthers" without me needing to say "Nottingham" in front of it. The simple equation to think about is how much money would they loose from the (very) few people that don't turn up to games because the team name doesn't have Newcastle in it? Now compare that to how much money Mobilx paid them.

We can be the East Midlands Panthers, Sheffeild can be the South Yorkshire Steelers.
Dunno what this move will acheive really.
Im thinking along the same lines as doughnut
A lot of money was paid!

Cardiff could become the Welsh Devils and we could also end up with the Irish Giants

Eagles did that and moved from Ayr to Glasgow, and look what happened to them If I were a Vipers fan I wouldn't be happy. It's the Nottingham part of our name that makes me proud more than the Pantehers part, and certainly not the GMB bit!!

I think the few seasons that we were simply the GMB Panthers is a good example of how this won't work. How many people stopped refering to us as Nottingham? The whole idea was to give us a more regional idea and the whole thing failed misserably.
We kept on calling them Nottingham and chanting Nottingham at matches, away fans kept calling us Nottingham, the press kept calling us Nottingham and even other clubs and the league kept calling us Nottingham. The club eventually realised the whole thing was a futile exercise and we became the Nottingham Panthers again!
I wonder how many people are actually going to stop refering to the team as 'Newcastle'?

Doesn't Gary Moran say at the beginning of games "Please welcome onto the ice, the GMB Nottingham Panthers!!!"
Or does he not??

I dont like this idea.... Doesnt affect me too much so im not all that bothered about it, but like someone said, i would still call the Panthers the Nottingham Panthers if we dropped the Nottingham part just like people will still call them the Newcastle Vipers...

TBH, I'm not that bothered. But then I have no real links to Newcastle-the nearest I got was spending 3 years at uni in Sunderland. I always call us the Vipers, rather than Newcastle anyway. In the same way I rarely say Nottingham Forest, Instead just Forest. 90% of people will know who we are anyway, and if we have a shed load of cash for something that makes no difference to the on ice product then it'll do.
