Took in the pre-season game down at Coventry this evening.
All I can say, if you plan to have a wager on Coventry winning anything...then don't. Solihull, easily matched the Blaze for long periods during the game, and if they had had a half decent powerplay unit they would have been several goals ahead by the end of the 1st period.
Ndur...oh dear. This guy is sponsored by a bus company and has the same turning circle as a bus. The only reason he didnt spend much time in the penalty box was that he wasn't fast enough or agile enough to catch anyone!. Gawd this guy makes 'Rickety' Ron Shudra look like a spring chicken!
Cloutier...Only one word describes him...tempremental! A Solihull player had the audacity to check him, and Cloutier seemed to just want to punch his lights out for the rest of the game. The guy can score, but will spend most of his time in the penalty box.
The 'Brit' Line..Unable to muster a score when having a 5 on 3 advantage against Solihull, Im afraid these Brits are just making up the numbers.
Nasreddine. The only player to show any quality in the Blaze side. Worked hard, good positional skill, good stick work. I think he will be one of the top D-men in the league this season.
I left with a few minutes to go and Blaze had huffed and puffed to a 5-2 lead..they made it look hard work against the EPL side.
The Zero Tolerance rules?
Michael Hicks I thought applied them well, and 90% of his calls were spot on. Some of the Blaze players havn't figured out the ZT at all yet...watch them Pims rocket up!!!

I think this weekends games against Newcastle will give a better reflection. Same goes for Sheffield v Hull and any other EIHL match ups. This was the first pre-season game after all. If they had won 12-0 it doesn't necessarily mean much - they put 8 goals past Hull in one period last season in the BK Cup, with a side that wasn't great. Coventry had a similar opening pre-season game against MK a couple of seasons ago. I think the score was 6-3 (?) same as tonight, and the performance less than inspiring. They went on to do pretty well that year.
All of the players will improve on this performance. I do worry about Ndur though...

The guy can score, but will spend most of his time in the penalty box. I thought Cloutier was having words with Tom Parker after he (parker) had just hit Tait, low and knee-to-knee. Also, I think your assesment of N'dur is way off the mark. Most seasoned watchers were impressed with him last night. Quick feet for a big guy, very good positional sense and apart from some wayward passing nothing to worry about. You don't play in the NHL, Austrian Elite league of Slovakian Elite league if your as bad as you suggest.

The only reason he didnt spend much time in the penalty box was that he wasn't fast enough or agile enough to catch anyone!. Gawd this guy makes 'Rickety' Ron Shudra look like a spring chicken! HL's been critical of the guy's speed on the ice, nothing more. I think HL has written a little bit more into the Blaze performance than I would (Martinski sums it perfectly,) but what I would say is that just because Ndur's played in the NHL doesn't mean he's quick on his feet & automatically a great skater. Allison & Antropov are slow & awkward skaters, but they're NHLers.

To be honest, I love that post by HL! After all the talk of us walking the league, playoffs and CC, it's good to have someone finally talking down the side. However, it was the first game of the season, most players have only been in the country for less than a week and noone is match-fit or used to each other yet. To talk about the game and not mention Simonton is bizarre- the guy was awesome. Cloutier, as mentioned, wasn't pleased with a low check from a Brit in a face cage and it was nice to see someone actually stand up for his teammates (something we didn't get that much last season). Ndur scored with a great slapshot and looked a lot better than most people expected (and certainly a step up from Belak on defence last season in terms of ability). The side looked good against a lower quality but probably more gelled EPL side and the fact that they didn't beat them 12-0 wasn't because they werent good enough to get the goals- far from it. We had Tom Pease from the under 19s playing parts of the game along with Joe Henry and Gizmo, all of whom probably wouldnt get ('much' in the case of Gizmo, 'any' for the other two) ice-time in a normal game (Tom Pease wouldn't even be there!). The lines were chopped and changed and a lot of the game was on the PK or PP, so we didn't see the link-ups that would come from guys that are used to playing together. Watkins also played well, as did Carlon, who has bags of potential, and Wales looked decent, too. Saying they're there just to make up numbers is a bit strange, but if it makes you happy, sure... I mean, saying "if they had a half decent powerplay unit" in the first game with an "unusual" bunch of guys on the ice that weren't really trying is, of course, spot on I'm sure the Panthers fans aren't claiming that they'll come last in the league and win nothing because they lost last night, and likewise the Solihull game meant nothing other than an opportunity to get some match-practise. Some people just like to moan about other teams

The above statment is a bit rich coming from Coventry fans who do not know a good player when they see one.
Theo Flurey, I rest my case.

Yeah, because that's not a generalisation at all, is it Fleury got little respect in Coventry because of the way he played in the Skydome. That's it- nothing more, nothing less This thread isn't another one about the man whose name you can't spell correctly. It was about last night's game between Cov and Solihull. Hopefully one day not every conversation about games/players will come back to Fleury- fingers crossed that that day will come sooner rather than later

Nobody gets respect in Coventry, opposing fans or players. Winning is all you are interested in. I have replied to your post, end of.

I have replied to your post, end of. Again, your generalisations are ridiculous. You don't know me. I'd take a guess that you don't know more than 99% of Blaze fans, yet you're posting authoritatively that winning is all we are interested in and that noone gets respect in Cov. Well winning obviously is not the only thing we're interested in as there have been a few of us posting on here about the performances of players rather than bragging about a win. As for getting respect- again, you have no idea. Fleury got the usual banter from the majority of fans and a few uncalled for comments from a couple of idiots. Those people have no place in hockey but were the minority. I'm not getting into that conversation again as it's been done to death, but suffice to say, you don't know what, and in this 'who', you're talking about

Nobody gets respect in Coventry, opposing fans or players. Hmmmmmm..... let's not go there just now. There were some problems in Coventry last year but on the brink of a new season let's start with open minds and see how things pan out at the Skydome this time around. Much more interesting to hear people's views on this season's Blaze roster than to rake over the embers of last season.

But lets be honest here and look at the bigger picture of this pre season game.
Usually pretty much Every single Coventry fan is going to put a positive spin on the players, its in the interest of the fans to get themselves and fellow fans excited. On the flip side any neutral is going to be going to that game looking for the cracks, even if they dont realise it thats what will happen.
when the honneymoon period is over (around october usually) then we will see how good every side is i think

Maybe so, but I for one still have no intention of going back to that place after my last trip and the way the Cov Fans treat folk.

Nobody gets respect in Coventry, opposing fans or players. See I've never had a problem in Coventry so I really dunno what they have done to upset so many people Worst thing that ever happened to us in Cov was my mum getting hit by the puck in the head, and her glasses saved her, but everyone was ever so helpful and making sure she was ok. So LOTR I think there's just a bit too much generalising in your post.
