How many NHL coaches sign their own squad? Answer - ZERO! It's their job to coach the players not pick them (that's the GM's job) That said I am certainly not advocating that here in the UK, no thank, no way never! But it is worth remembering, it's simply not true to say every coach gets a say in who get's signed! were not talking about the NHL tho are we? l66cjh, You said... Im sure you will find that all coach have a say in who gets offered a contract and who doesn't. Before the season started ME was quoted as saying that Neil Black had given him alot of money to sign the players HE wanted. You said that ALL coaches pick their players I simply said that that is not true. You made the blanket statement, not me.

I'm not sure on Askey. Some good performances, but then he's had some poor performances, and made some stupid mistakes. And I wish when he had the puck behind the net he wouldn't always hit it away cos half the time one of our guys is only a metre or so away. I think Lyle is good, but then the ITC-nettie issue is a concern. The thing about askey is, is that he has come in a played well and played poor this season, whereas when rasto came in last year, he never seemed to have a bad game really so everyone was thinking going into this season that it would be exactly the same and is why most people critised him because he was having " off nights" on what seemed to be a regular basis. I think askey does deserve a new contract if ellis is back and obviously he will want a higher wage.

Off topic but picking up on the point of GM, the GMs in the NHL pick the rosters with input from the coach BUT the GMs over there arnt glorified press officers who shy away from the limelight when things go wrong. The coach should have full control of his roster and finances IMO. GMs in this league should be for PR and keeping advertisors and sponsors happy (how good GM is at that is another debate)

I think his stats alone speak for themselves (although granted only half a season) his gaa is good enough to warrant a pay rise and maybe a two year deal if he wants to commit that long . Don't forget he is a former draft pick anahiem i believe so that tell's me that he is quality, they rarely make mistakes in the draft. Also saw him "hung out to dry" by sloppy line changes towards the end of the season and although these may or may not have been deliberate due to formentioned dressing room strife how many two three on ones do most goalies survive unscathed? . Granted the goal where he just stopped playing against cardiff waiting for offside to be called was his fault anyone knows you play to the whistle in ice hockey, football etc but the stats say to me he is the best goalie the panthers have signed for a while . Snap up the chance that is what i think.

No thanks. Granted he had a good weekend but he's too inconsistent for my liking.

No thanks. Granted he had a good weekend but he's too inconsistent for my liking. He seems to be OK whenever he plays at the NIC though! Imagine that as a home form record... I'd like to see Askey back next year though.

You said it though "OK" Last time he played us at nic how many did he let in? He is a big game player but that is nothing against consistency imo.

Good point, Spence - I'd still prefer Askey back next year even if Lehman was available, I just thought I'd raise the possibility that Jody likes playing at the NIC. Or maybe it's just that being Panthers matches they're big games by default? I've not looked at his stats for the rest of the season, just gone on what I've seen in Nottingham- and I missed that 6-1 before the CC Final.

Tbh his and askey's stats aren't too different Askey - gaa 2.25 save % 91.9 Lehman - gaa 2.43 save % 91.8 The thing with jody is when he has a bad one its shocking and i think sheffield defensive style helps his %

You`d just know that if we got Lehman ... ALL those checks from behind , blocker across the back of the head and slashes across the back of the players legs that he usually gets away with, would get called as penalties.

As for Lehman.... nevermind those slashes, blocker punches etc getting called as penalties... we would just coach it out him! (and thats not a good thing) Judging by the last 2 seasons as well and Lehmans rebounds we just havent got the defense for it
