My ST holder mate tells me the rumour is that Notts will go in to Admin next season. Makes sense. Go up and then lose the points and debt. Theres always rumours, but Trew stated 110% we will not be going into administration. It depends how far into the future that promise is for I guess!

Notts go into 2 games this weekend in pole position for 2nd place. The defence record since SC took over has been breathtaking and with Trew as chairman and SC as manager I think Notts fans are very comfortable now after so much turmoil.
Last weeks win over Rotherham was HUGE for the season. Its entirely in our hands now. I cant see Rochdale dropping enough points for us to catch them, but with the way were playing I think we will do our bit to keep the pressure on at least.
The finances are talked about very little now. Its almost eerie around the ground as people discuss football, and even other teams fixures/results again! I wouldnt say Im happy to ignore the debt, but RT has claimed he is very realistic and honest, so if hes got it under control I dont think everyone else worrying about it is going to help.

Big week coming up for Notts with a home game against Bury quickly followed by trips to Shrewsbury and Northampton. All 3 opponents are pressing for the play-offs at least and it could be a crucial week on the pitch.

All 3 opponents are pressing for the play-offs at least and it could be a crucial week on the pitch. 9 Clean sheets in the last 10 games and SC undefeated. We are reaching our potential at a key point of the season and the league title is technically in our hands. If we win our game in hand, and beat Rochdale in 2 weeks we go top, which given the fact we have momentum and how well we are playing Id say is very likely. Still, I cant say Id be too upset with 2nd It was a massive run of games and weve done better than pretty much anybody could have hoped for. Off the pitch, things have settled down too so things are looking good at the lane again. So many teams have bottled it (Bury,Rotherham,Chesterfield all dropping shocking points) which has also helped.

And for the first time since about October, Notts are within touching distance of 1st place.
The month of March is the grit month in Football, where character and determination shine through, and the season is usually decided. We were fantastic, and pretty much made our promotion push in the month. April looks like being about the title now.
Rochdale lost 5-0 at Torquay, whilst Notts had to dig deep to steal a 1-0 win away at Northampton. Now, Notts are 2 points behind with 1 game in hand, and play Rochdale in 8 days time. 10clean sheets in his first 11 games in charge for Steve Cotterill, simply wow! For a team who score goals for fun on their day, thats a very impressive start defensively!
Also, touching wood, theres no talk of the finances anymore. Whilst this is sweeping things under the carpet, its pleasing that the attention has been turned torwards the pitch and the new board team must be applauded for that. Ray Trew has openly admitted to being won over by the club and the fans, with Mrs Trew sitting in the kop for home games now and travelling away to sit in the stands!
Anything other than administration (which I still dont beleive is the answer) in the summer now would be a bonus really. Weve got a squad of players capable of doing a job in league 1, if we can add a little more depth to make us an overall decent "league1 squad" we could really push on and have a good season.

Also, touching wood, theres no talk of the finances anymore. Well there hadn't been until now! Reported tonight that Greg Clarke, the newly installed chairman of the Football League, has instigated an investigation into Notts County due to them exceeding the League Two wage cap and deriving unfair financial advantage by not paying creditors. There is the possibility of further action against the club although it seems unlikely that would have any bearing on promotion to League One.

I think there is still a huge issue with regard to the breach of the "wage cap" that the division holds, plus the probability of a police investigation.
Its certainly been a roller coaster season for Notts, but I think there is still plenty more ups and downs to come.

Ray Trew has said it wont scupper our season, and wont have a major impact on us, but there will be strict new rules for next season as a result of whats happened at the Lane this season. Not the legacy we were looking to leave league 2 with, but not our problem anymore Id love a police investigation, especially if it is made public. We need to look to the future and move on etc etc but it be great to get official word on what happened, especially if it brought some fraudulent people to justice.

Notts' main problem is that they are losing money and in deep debt. How that is tackled in L1 is the main issue.
The FL needs to sort out its salary cap situation. If you break the cap you should face severe penalties. I would suggest a massive points deduction (20 points or more). That needs to be in place for next season.

Salary caps are a good idea, but enforcing them is impossible. Notts were probably way over the limit so easy to prove, but got round it by having a mystery cash injection (Ray Trew) which boosted our annual turnover, meaning we are actually within our means. As we see in the elite league, the practicalities of a wage cap just dont really work, and end up being guidelines rather than a cap. Deductions of 20 points would be so harsh too, that it would force teams who did want to break the cap (quite a few if rumours are true) to just hide everything. Nice theory, and I totally agree with you in principle, but I just dont think it would work as the penalties would not be enforceable. Also, isnt there an EU or fifa law preventing the limit of what players can earn which scuppers a set cap too? That was mentioned a while ago (didnt pay attention as Notts were not in danger of smashing any caps at the time!)

The best idea from my perspective would be to have one from income, not turnover. From ticket, shirt and refreshment sales, not from benefactor cash. That's what got you into this mess to begin with.

A salary cap is easily enforcable. Look at Rugby League.
Cash injections should be part of turnover. However, they have to be cash injections. What Man City are doing is fine. There should be no debt involved in a cash injection.
If Trew wishes to inject £500k of his money in to Notts to keep Notts within the cap then fine. If Doughty is willing to pump in millions at Forest then great. However, it must be a gift.
Abramovich 'loaned' millions to Chelsea but has since written it off. So it is now a gift though it wasn't at the time. Loans should only be used for club infrastructure such as a new ground.

Go back up there and take it down, probably just kids. Dont get me wrong, nobody wants to see statues defaced but its not like somebody has damaged it in any way. JC: Irrelevant comments, LH didnt put it there himself did he?

If your referring to the time he did, go and discuss it elsewhere, rather than a Notts discussion on a hockey forum. By the way, for those who dont know, it was a photoshop image of the Hughes masks on sale on the Clough statue. Bad taste maybe, but hardly deserves the comparison to the people who physically vandalised it some are throwing around. Or, the blasting of the club and every single person to do with it.

I can understand them trying to get one over on us, but Lee Hughes? About as disrespectful as you could get. It seems many Notts fans have forgotten what that man did.

So, have you seen this defacing, or are you referring to the photoshopped effort some kid did on his PC and posted on a Notts forum, having been nowhere near said statue? Just so we're clear.. Im sure no ones forgotten, feel free to post on a Notts forum though to ask opinions. This is hardly the place for such a debate is it?

Can we get this back on topic please?
I know a few on here will know I have good reason to be uncomfortable with Hughes playing for Notts, but that debate has been repeated countless times, there's no point in doing it all over again.

Congrats Notts on the promotion, a great achievement given all the off field distractions this season. With Panthers lifting the CC it would be great to see all 3 teams (Panthers, Notts and Forest) achieve something this season. Great for Nottingham sport.

To be fair though, Forest have acheived something already, in making the playoffs. Notts can gain promotion by getting anything out of tomorrows home game with Morecambe, and would all but guarantee the title if they win tomorrow, then Tuesday (against 2nd place Rochdale). A massive credit to the coaching staff IMO who have been the only constant thing at the club all season. Cotterill gets the glory now, but Kevan,Johnson and Johnson (Michael and Tommy) have kept the club on course all season. Not forgetting Ray Trew of course, who could turn out to be the best thing thats happened to the club in a very long time.
