If only Rob Hulse had got as clean a contact with the ball later on! More importantly, how can a referee give liverpool a penalty for Gerrard deliberatly running into a defender?

I suspect Gerrard told him what was going to happen. Its such a shame to see one of Englands best players (hell probably Englands best player) doing things like that, its cheating and it should be stopped

Yes Gerrard oviously played for it but he didn't dive and if the defender wasn't trying to wrap his arm round him then he would never have got a pen. Simple as that.

I agree, if Kozluk had wrapped his arms around Gerrard it would have been a stupid thing to do. But he didnt, he was stood with his arms out (almost ALL defenders do this at any set plays) his arm was only "wrapped" around gerrard when he ran into it. Kozluk even fell over in the process of trying to move his arm! There is no way in hell there was enough contact there to send an athelete like Gerrard to the floor. Just because he came into contact with the defender, that doesnt mean it wasnt a dive. Gerrard conned the referee. Simple as that.

But if the Defender wasn't trying to obstuct him by putting his arm round him even when he knew the ref was looking at them both then he wouldn't have given a pen.

It's not obstructing him, it's keeping him in front of him, there was no power in his arms. Us defenders do it all the time. Gerrard then ran into him and collapsed, it's not a penalty.

On another forum I used the only people who didn't think it was a penalty were Everton fans. IIRC, isn't the aim of the game to play the ball. Tell me, how could Kozluk have been trying to play the ball when he didn't look at it once. He eyes were on Gerrard, I actually thought at the time, "Wait until after the game to swap shirts mate". He was stupid to carry on after the ref had warned him. Didn't once try to play the ball tried for the player. Anyway, that's history now. We won 4-0 like we should have done on the opening day. Our game plan was well out the window that day. We then lost 0-1 to the Mancs. That's life!

Ok, you tell me this, was Gerrard attempting to play the ball? the ball went nowhere near him IIRC so it seems unlikely... What SHOULD have happened on the first day of the season should have been a 1-0 win to Sheffield United. The awarding of that penalty was one of the worst decisions of the season (Im not saying Gerrard dived on this occasion, but it wasnt a pen) United got that point against you because we played well, not because you had the wrong game plan

On the opening day, the only thing stopping us winning mate was our finishing, which was woeful. not taking away from Sheffield the fact that you ground out a result and got the goal, but we were our own worst enemy.
You are right about the penno, very lucky on our part to help us back into the game.
I think if we had the players and game plan we had at anfield, there is no doubt in my mind we would have beat you at your ground.
