Summary of Mick Hollands FP Article :
LET'S HOPE THE REFS CAN COPE
Goons/Enforcers
''With genuine enforcer Brantt Myhers apparently heading for Newcastle Vipers and adding to their already tough looking roster, it makes you wonder if we have the refeeres and linesmen experienced enough to cope this season.
Newcastle filled their team with beef last season and it paid off, with them winning the paly off title and finishing second in the Elite League.
They clearly believe that's the way to go this time too.
Take nothing away from the Vipers. Their obvious harmony on and off the ice also paid dividends. Their success made other teams look long and hard at their rosters before everyone- pehaps Edinburgh excepted -signed at least one hard case.
Many people have asked why teams have gone down this 'goon' route with the new zero tolerance policy set to come into effect.
But they must remember that, as far as 'zt' is concerned, fighting doesn't equate with hooking, tripping, interference, etc. And I undersatnd that this season, the heavy weights will be allowed three fights before they are kicked out of games.
This means, in theory, that with Newcastle having three+ scrappers, thay can target, for instance, Panthers Ryan Shymr individuall, get him kicked out of the game and then be allowed to intimidate willy-nilly.
Its not quite as simple asthat, of course. But much will depend on how the refeeres call the game and juding by their performaces of recent years, I am not convinced they are all up to it, some of them being intimidated by the reputations of the enforcers as much as the opposition are.
Wether players like him (Myhers), team mates Jeremy Cornish and Andre Payette and Coventry's Rumun Ndur are mobile enough skaters to cope with the 'zt' remains to be seen.
There is no doubt Ellis brought in Shymr as an insurance for his flair players and it must be pointed out that that the avearge height of the Panthers squad is over 6ft 1in.
Ellis is also confident that, as size, also equates to strengthon the puck, his team won't be left wanting...''
