Obviously the likes of the Flyers cant compete with having all those top 3 picks like Pittsburgh in Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury and Whitney.
However, how long can they possibly keep them together? By next contract Malkin and Crosby will both be max salary players. Fleury will be right behind them and then Staal could earn more than anyone.
This made me think. In the salary cap era, would you rather have a team like Buffalo with 3 lines of very skilled players, or a team like Tampa or soon-to-be Pittsburgh where more than half their cap is in 3 players with little talent in the rest of the roster?

Easy question, have a balanced team as opposed to a team where 3 players soak up a large chunk of the wage cap.

How many Stanley Cups have Buffalo won recently? Ask the same question about Tampa.

How many Stanley Cups have Buffalo won recently? Ask the same question about Tampa. Buffalo have never won a Stanley cup. It's well documented that the reason the Lightning have struggled this season is that they have had to allow members of their cup winning team to leave as free agents as they heavily committed to the likes of St Louis & Lecavalier financially, meaning players such as Khabibulin & Kubina were unable to be re-signed. You're asking the question that in the era of salary cap, is it better to have a balanced team (financially) or have a large chunk of cap spent on a few players. I answered the former, but bringing Tampa Bay into the equation is ridiculous as they won a cup when there was no wage cap.

Yeh, you're probably right. Having stars doesn't seem to worry Ottawa however..

But what about Leclair, Recchi, Gonchar, Ouellet, Whitney, Orpik and also Talbot and Armstrong having possitive seasons. I think you need to realse that they do have good players but they also have superstars (at least up and coming) so they really do outshine normal players and knock there icetime down and reducing their points totals so I really wouldn't say the Pens have a couple of 'weak' lines. (Reading through what I just put I'm confused and if it doesn't make sense just ignore it! ;D) To answer your question I'd side with a team like Buffalo.

or to expand, one star who's constantly injured and another who only plays when the first star plays.

Yeh, you're probably right. Having stars doesn't seem to worry Ottawa however.. Ottawa's strength is that they've drafted well and as a result, they've either had good players develpoing from draft picks or they've been able to trade players for other players. They still stink though.
