For all those Cageites who dont live in the distribution area of the Football Post here is a summary of Mike Hollands article this week:
ELLIS CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON TO START
Pre-season Ellis talks about the importance of the pre-training camp in terms of team-building, and making sure that everyone is reading of the same page from day one.
McAslan/Rees A profile is given of both these players, and Ellis talks of how important Rees will be to the team, and how he (Ellis) would be suprised if McAslan doesn't tally 30 goals next season
Team work Ellis is quoted as saying:
' I like the make of the team. Its how I wanted it to look from the outsetand the mix of size, mobility and speed is ideal for the new 'zero-tolerance' rules.
Special teams will play a crucial role in the outcome of the trophies this season and our power-play, in particular, looks very strong
With a more open game and more clean hits likely, size is also important
The bigger guys will alsways be more durable over the length of a game and I think weve only got three under six foot
As far as the defence is concerned, I hope to run a five-man rotation at first to get all of them all used to playing alongside each other.
Cory and Jan are more offensive and will be looking to get forward. Mike and Mopes are more stay at home while Danny can do either.'
Dave Mastos Mick Holland quotes Dave Mastos who is apparently pinpoints Coventry and Belfast as the main dangers to the Steelers title bid. Mastos is quoted as saying:
'Everytime I look at a player for Sheffield, I have to compare then with guys at Belfast and Coventry'
In response to Mastos pinpointing Coventry and Belfast as the main dangers, Mick Holland writes:
'Mmmm, we shall see.......'
Regards
HL

A rookie coach and possible short bench may hamper Sheffield's ability to win the league, along with the possibilty of Tessier taking an early season sabbatical. Paper talk to appease the fans, as always time will tell. Rumours of next weeks signings don't unduly worry me either, despite what some Sheffield people think.

I'd agree with the possibility that a rookie coach may hamper their chances... but a short bench? They still have 4 import slots left to fill, which will take them up to 14 outskaters - only one less than us, and that's counting James Neil - who, to be fair, isn't expected to get regular shifts. You want a short bench? - look towards Belfast.... And I can't see Tessier bunking off like that again - surely it would hurt his future recruitment prospects to be seen to skip out on his team two years running - and he obviously has the ambition to play in better leagues. It might be an entertaining bit of schadenfreude to see him screw over Sheffield the same way he shafted us, but I can't see it happening. Doesn't make them any better than us (though I have no doubt such will be claimed) - we were just unlucky enough to be the ones he screwed. Agreed there. I'm sure that Sheffield are going to get at least a couple of damned good players in their remaining recruitment - the likes of Shawn Maltby and Cote have been rumoured, good signings the both of them - but I still don't think they are going to have a huge amount of depth when it comes to offensive firepower. I'm not saying that they are going to be bad - but unless they really pull a hat out of a rabbit, I can see them getting no higher than mid-table.

Mike Ellis is also a rookie at this level. He's not a rookie coach though is he! Nor is he an unsuccessful one.... a trophy last year, and two the year before (including winning the BNL league title). Not to mention beating us twice in the crossover games, and in fact being the only BNL team to get above .500 hockey in the crossovers (7 wins, 1 draw, 1 OT loss, 5 losses). Plus Mike himself has been the sole dual-national chosen for the GB team in the past two years... which has to say something good about him. We could do an awful lot worse...

Perhaps we ought to thank Mastos for deflecting the attention to elsewhere for a change.
