How refreshing is it to have all but one of the squad signed and sealed by the second week of August, when was the last time we did that? Well done Mike Ellis!
Just wondering now we have completed our forwards, to my recollection we only have two centres in Stevens and Myers..who is going to take the third role?

I thought of it as
1. MsAslan Stevens Emersic (speedy line) 2.Simoes Petricko (heard he occasionally played centre for Newcastle) Shmyr (A slightly heavier line) 3.Clarke Myers Moran (a stable third brit line with quality)
Cooke, Neil as required
Ellis Carlsson to cover
nothing official just a picture I've painted in my own head really...

And I'm sure they wont waste Simoes and Shmyr on the same line!!
I'd have thought:
Petricko - Stevens - McAslan Clarke - Simoes - Emersic Shmyr - Myers - Cooke??

I have the impression Ellis wants a checking line only, used to put the other top line off their game.
If things do change
Expect
same top line
2nd line of
Petricko Simoes Emersic
Then Cooke Myers Smhyr

I know some people would be worrying about Cooke, but with Shmyr to protect him he should blossom in to the player he looks he can be. Very fast and agile and can find the goal. He could be a real key player this season IMO

I would of thought Shmyr, Simoes who I have heard checks everything that moves and Petricko who didn't mind of a bit of the rough stuff last year...

Mopes, probably.... with Neilson, Krajicek and the as-yet unsigned last import D-man, and then Danny Meyers - who is a dedicated D-man, unlike Mopes who can play both D and forward.

I'd like, as last year, to see 3 lines with 2 imports on each. Clarke/Myers are good enough for the top 2 lines and I hope Ellis plays them that way. Think what a 2 import "crash" line would do to teams like Sheffield, Coventry and Belfast. I'm quietly looking forward to it all.

If things do change Expect same top line 2nd line of Petricko Simoes Emersic Then Cooke Myers Smhyr That looks pretty good. Tricko has never had the responsibility of being 'top line' in GB(overshadowed by massa-campbell-smital in bracknell, and was not the rightplayer/not good enough in Newcastle) , but could work well with those guys. Maybe use Shmyrr a bit more, if teams like us start to overpower some of the 'quickies'

I think there's a lot less chance of us getting muscled out of the game.

Having looked at the possible lines available with this team of players there is a great deal of flexibility open to the coach depending on the type of team we are facing and what type of game he wants to play. However my worry is we don't appear to have many players whose specialist position is Centre. We have a number of players that can play there if required but I am concerned that we may be at a disadvantage when we face teams who have face off experts in their lineup.

However - being a centre is about more than just winning face-offs. Let's face it - Lee Jinman was an awesome centre for us, and he wasn't exactly the best at winning face-offs, was he? Plus there have been wingers who have been rather good when the puck drops. Fully agree with you on the flexibility issue.

I agree that playing centre is not totally about face offs, just when you get down to those crucial face offs that you need to win, I am not sure who will be our go to player. But probably getting worried over nothing. By the way if you thought that working out the full strength line ups makes you smile in anticipation, try working out the power play and penalty killing teams. ;D

He said that the sheer number of permutations open to him was immense.... all because he picked players who were flexible, who could do more than just one thing. He did mention that he didn't want forwards who couldn't/wouldn't help out on the defensive side... he was quite adamant about that.

The great benefit of the squad that ME has built is that it does not appear to rely on one or two players. If one player gets injured it would appear that another player will simply fill in without the team suffering too much. For the last few seasons we have suffered when specific players got injured (or left) and looking at this team I believe we are in a better position to cope this year with any injuries that may occur. And over a long season that could be the vital difference between winning trophies and finishing second.
