Ellis appears to be his own man who knows what he wants. GM was the usual trying to take some credit for the choice of players but I think it's an Ellis team alright. Next signing - Gary awaits a fax from Canada and expects to make announcement on Thursday. Can't wait for next season think it will be a tough one but with the players Ellis has chosen they should still be standing towards the end of the season and not soldiering on with heaven knows what injuries. ( Doughnut note the apostrophe in it's )

Sounded to me like GM was trying to make it clear that he wasn't involved in the decisions on players - that it was all Mike Ellis.... which matches up to what Ellis was saying afterwards - that if we don't have any success this season, it will totally be down to the team and himself... GM is solely concentrating on the marketing and office stuff, and the team is all Ellis'..... GM did make it clear that he was part of the decision on employing Mike Ellis, though - can't exactly blame him for wanting to take some credit for that... so far, I like what I see. (This isn't just me hanging on every word from Mike Ellis, BTW - I've spoken to a few Bracknell fans about his time there, and I've seen him myself for GB... and so far, he's matching up to expectations.)

Mike Ellis is HOT!!! Seriously. he is stunning!! ;D I will agree with that 100% I will be looking forward to seeing the Panthers in Edinburgh this year moreso now you have Ryan Shmyr as well, as I watched his brother play in Dundee, so it will be good to see Ryan play as well. Looks like you guys could be serious contenders for the league this year, Mike seems to be putting a great team together.

Some quality pics there Rob cheers, I can tell Rod had just stepped off a plane lol Thanks Pidge. He told me he flew in yesterday from Munich. He said he had gone out for a walk and Mike dropped by to ask him to come down yesterday afternoon. That might have been the last minute thing.

After mulling it all over, I have to say... what was said by Mike Ellis made sense, and also sounded like it should be good for us.
Various items that come to mind (from both the public Q&A and private chats):-
- The new long-term attitude of the club.... Calle being employed both as assistant coach AND as a scout - to be scouting out players for the 2007-08 season! Mike was talking about Calle travelling all over the place (including Europe) to build up a sort of database of players worth keeping an eye on.... and he was talking about younger players, early twenties.
- Mike Ellis appears to think long-term and prize loyalty. He sticks with clubs for a while, and several players he mentioned did the same (including Rod Stevens). After all the revolving-doors that we've been having, that's a bit of a relief...
- Again, long-term thinking... junior development. Apparently Mike Ellis has already spoken to Mike Urquhart (head coach of the NIHC) about getting U19s players training more with the Panthers (and vice versa) - including shifting one training session a week to an evening slot, just for that very purpose.
- Mike's recruitment policy. A huge spreadsheet with every player on it and lots of check-boxes.... checking back with all of the coaches and players that they've played with, right back to age 16... no player being considered unless he has at least 6 positive check-marks, and if they get a bad one? - dropped (eg: Tessier) He doesn't want superstars, he wants team players - and he expects them to work their guts out. No mercy for anyone who doesn't? - nothing said, but that was the impression I got.
- Skating. Mike kept stressing that every single player was a good skater - including the big ones. He wasn't even considering any player who wasn't a fast skater... Now it was already known that Mike Ellis is a very offensively-minded coach, but this just went to reinforce it. The fitness side is also one that ME is known for, and he actually showed some of us a copy of a workout programme he'd got for them. Errr - OUCH!! When he says that they're going to be the fittest team out there on the ice, I can begin to believe it - anyone who could even survive that will be as fit as hell! ;D
- The pre-season start-up..... out in France, 3 games, 8 on-ice training sessions, plus off-ice stuff... then back for the Bracknell game and the open training session. Starting the season with a bunch of players who don't know each other is not an option this season.....
- Hitting. Apparently, Steve Simoes is a total checking monster. He'll hit anything that moves, over and over again. I think I'm going to like this guy..... Mike Ellis appeared to be very upbeat about a few players in particular - Simoes was one, Neilson another. Simoes is apparently a real winner - stats not saying it all. When he plays on a team, they win things - could also be captain material, apparently he's got great leadership potential. Interestingly, he mentioned that he had more money left in his budget after the first couple of signings than he'd expected. Confirmation of the suspicion that the Vipers were talking tosh when claiming that Krajicek & Petricko came here for megabucks?
- Corey Neilson - the unintended signing! Apparently, Neilson's stats sheet was somehow put by mistake in a pile of over 200 that ME got... looked at this one and thought "what's he doing here? - too good!" - decided to check him out, chased him down and called him... Apparently the thing about his wife being Scottish and wanting to come over here was a big factor (good job ME didn't tell him there's a team in Edinburgh! ;D) (As an aside - apparently Rod Stevens called the Panthers, not the other way around. Says something good about us).
- Injury cover. Calle (wearing #77) on defence, and Mike (wearing #44) on forward or defence. Both of them seemed to think that they probably would be needed at some point... both also seemed torn between not wanting it to happen (because the team would be suffering) but also wanting to get out there and play. Understandable....
- 5 D-men. 3 imports, 2 Brits - which pretty much seals it, Mopes will be on the blueline... makes sense to me. ME couldn't believe that some teams were still going with 4 D-men... a recipe for disaster. What with him & Calle to cover, plus some of the forward quite happy to play D (Emersic, Simoes - apparently Simoes played 12 games in a play-offs championship on D, and they won the trophy)... got some flexibility, just in case.
- Evan Lindsay. Mike Ellis was extremely upbeat about him. ME had played with Bracknell against him when EL was on a Dundee side that was not as good as the Bees - yet EL stoned them. Apparently he's awesome against penalty shoot-outs. Coventry's Paul Thompson was apparently impressed by us signing EL, so it;s not just ME that thinks he's good. ME was asked about Cruickshank... basically said that he'd had his chance, and that he wasn't a big-game netminder.... good over the long haul of the league, but not in a crunch. No mention of money or personality issues.....
- Other teams. Some good signings by other teams, some decent rosters being built up... but it's a long haul, a good team will beat a bunch of great individuals any day, and if anyone out there thinks that they've already got it in the bag, they are dreaming....
There was more, but I can't remember any more details at the moment....

Great post Shaggy! Lots of info for us that couldn't make it last night, thank you sir. ME certainly knows what kind of TEAM he wants and I love the loyalty idea, scouting through this season for the future is inspiring! I certainly remember Lindsay coming up big for London in One-on-ones!!
Wonder how many jerseys will have Simoes name on? Or will Shmyr be more popular?

He'll be wearing #76 according to ME last night. This is because if/when Calle steps in he won't wear any number other than 77 Simoes' usual number is #12 but he'll be wearing #13, as James Neil wears 12!

James Neil will be wearing #12 because that was apparently his grandfather's number? Nice bit of tradition there.... I was chatting to Calle afterwards, and he's not fanatically wedded to #77 (he's worn #23 and #55 previously - but gave the latter up for Stephen Cooper?) - I gather it was more of a case of Corey Neilson volunteering to drop to #76 once he heard someone already had a claim on #77, rather than Calle insisting on it...
