Just wondering if many other clubs use them to the extent that steelers seem to. It sounds that a few of their players are on 2 year contracts. My question... whats the point. Surely they are just as eligible (sp?) to be approached in the off season. Just as likely to leave using their (inevitable) get out clause. Im sure the clubs can get rid as well if hes a dud. Are there some big advantages Im over looking? Yea its good they show a commitment for 2 years but the option is always there to go.

Could be just a psychological boost for the players & the team knowing there's a bit more of a tie there.
I guess it could also save time, money and hassle when recruiting next year's team.
Given how easy it is for clubs and players to end the contract, one year seems strange in a way. It's a bit arbitrary. Why not just have an open ended contract with a 3 week (or whatever) notice period as that (in effect) is all the contracts are worth anyway.

It's basically a nice statement of intent to the player, and also a nice message to the fans for stability. It gives the player a pretty much garaunteed job for the year after should they like it. And it also gives the club a nice boost in the recruiting side of things in the off season

I think the two year deals tie in with a course the players are taking at the University of Sheffield.
This could work well, but of course if the player doesnt like the club or the course, or the club don't like the player, or the player is thick and cant do the course, it could get messey.

Sure;y a two year deal means...IF you stay for the second year its the same deal as agreed for this year....Thus avoiding any thrashing out of extras.
I'll take a two year deal with my workplace if only they can sort out the first years pay-deal.Tut.

If they sign a 2 year deal then it's likely that salary and bonuses are all sorted out and put in the contract. Although, there is nothing to stop them renegotiating at the end of the season.
They could sign 2 year deals in a similar way to the NHL, so that over the duration of the contract they get X, but either get paid more in the first year and less in the second (or vice versa) to help with the wage cap.

two year deals for me are little dodgy.
look at Craighead and Cadotte, Craighead had a awsome fist season and failed to live up for the second and had his bust ups with Paul Adey, and Mark Cadotte, had a great 2003/04 season but 2004/05 seemed out of place, (Yes I know they were on one year deals)
but are good look at Curtis Cruickshank two very seasons in Nottingham even though I've slated him, he was the best netminder for two years and had a GGA of 2.04 in 2004/05 and 1.94 in 2005/06 (also on a one year deal)
but what happens if a player thinks i've had enough after one year? also with Scott Ricci his been a different team since 1998/99

After the first season both the player and the club have the OPTION of a further year it basically means should the first year go well negotiations will be seamless the second year
