Him and Neill I’d have taken back on defence. Despres was very much a cool and calm defencemen, nothing flashy, slow as anything but what he lacked in that, he made up for with pulling passes and plays out of nowhere. Could instantly see the experience when he joined. Sad he’s not back, but not devastated.

If he gets fit he could be the best Dman in the league. I would've had him back.

It took him a while to get his fitness level up and he was still pretty slow but he did read the game better than anyone else on the roster. Not too fussed though, another year in the legs won't see him any quicker. I always felt he could have done more offensively as well as he had a hell of a pass on him.

With Corey signing Mackay as well today from Dundee he's looks to be building a big, solid D corp so far: 6'1", 6'2", 6'4", 6'5"

Offensively in the league Despres scored twice as many goals as Neill. That was two ! 🤭

Considering you often criticise Panthers for spin, you don't half use some yourself!

(You must have missed the sarcasm and the imoji) Although one could argue that with Neill supposedly being offensive and running the PP whilst also logging huge minutes every night,Despres meanwhile was more a stay home D. You’d have expected Neill to massively outscore Despres and he didn’t.

Whilst Iginla picks his stats to suit his argument, he ain't the only one Jono.

Why? I think you're equating big and solid with slow which is not what I was suggesting. Speed and the ability to read the game quickly for good positioning aren't the preserve solely of forwards after all. Was merely observing that he seemed to have favoured larger defensemen with a bigger reach and who will be difficult to move in the crease so far. Which is a popular choice for coaches after all He was himself known for his speed and ability to read the game quickly at 6'5", but also for his reach and being difficult to move in a puck battle. My suggestion was actually that this could cause opposition teams problems. All other factors being equal the size of the D might be an advantage
