As frustrating as this weekend has been for everyone, I think it's safe to say that the team has exceeded people's expectations this year. I think we have a good young coach who will only get better as he learns on the job. He has got us playing a much more exciting brand of hockey and the team has an identity and tons of character, unlike the last few years. The recruitment has also been good for a first year Director of Hockey on a smaller budget than our title rivals. I just think we need to give this time to work and we as fans need to back the club and drop any agendas that we have with them. As however the season ends, this is the best Panthers team for the last few years and the club is heading in the right direction.

For comparison we never won the ISL yet teams such as bracknell and aye even managed it...

Even when there were only about five teams in the league and one was a hopeless London Racers team Panthers still couldn’t even raise a proper challenge. Then even all through the Phillips/Ragan disaster years in Cardiff and Sheffield the Panthers only managed it once. During that era Panthers should have dominated the league yet didn’t even come close to doing that.

Think some of us might be missing the point here... No i completely get the point you are making yadda yadda yadda team much better with new coach, blah blah blah restricted budget & exceeded expectations, Blah punching above our weight, yadda new systems need time to gel etc etc etc THIS IS THE SAME OLD CRAP WITH A FEW VARIANTS WE HAVE BEEN FED SINCE NB TOOK OVER THE CLUB... Imho its utter drivel... the club are fleecing the fans more than any other club in the league (most expensive webcast and only when its a sellout, most expensive shirts most expensive sponsorship etc etc) and yet this is not reflected in the quality on the ice, you yourself said you think we have a smaller budget than our rivals. WHY IS THE ACCEPTABLE? if our rivals can spend it then surely we can. I also dont buy this time to gel crap either, in our league teams come and go most of the time on a year to year basis and also we have seen teams sign coaches who are able to win stuff straight away such as our rivals like Belfast, Cardiff and more recently Sheffield . Couple of last points, 1. If you have enjoyed the hockey you have paid for this season then tbh its all that really matters personally i want to see a successful team on the ice and by success i mean will trophies. If you this this is the best panthers team for a few seasons then imho we have been shortchanged on the ice because we should with the resources that should be available in Nottingham be at least challenging for trophies so saying this is the best team as a positive is naive and pampering to the management, just because we have been served crap for several years and its a little better this season is no cause for celebration. Management should be praying every night they still have fans. 2. They have exceeded expectations (or they might do not over yet) is based on what was a very average team signed at the start of the season as compared to our rivals and even clan had a better team, without the very necessary changed implemented we were realistically looking at 5/6th place with the results early season bearing this out so not so great recruitment eh.. and imho even with the changes (oh and no bulmer replacement btw) we are still a long way short off spending of our rivals plus remember the imports that have come even wont be paid a full season... win win for the management... You say young coach... management hear cheap... 3. Finally there is no proof whatsoever that the club are heading in any direction right or otherwise, till we know what next season squad is likely to be. IF we keep our bang average brits (exception of maybe betteridge and perlini) and dont re-sign the actual good players from this season then its likely to be more of the same how is that an improvement? History tells us that panthers do not build a dynasty or a squad to build on as this is not something that has happened over the last 20 odd years in fact not since the Dampier years when you had the had a junior development to have players move up to the senior squad. Its just as likely to be not as to happen, i think every panthers fan wants us to build but its a little bit premature to say this will happen... P.S. Oh i forgot to mention most expensive tickets and which other clubs have a surcharge thats added on for a scoreboard and still paying it even though the scoreboard is now installed?

Thats because John Nike (Bracknell) Bill Barr (Ayr) the Manchester owners etc threw tonnes of cash at success.. panthers never had thoughs kind of budgets in those days and certainly never broke the bank. Thats history forget it and move on.. I know you find that very difficult.

They want every last penny from their punters, love to make out they do everything they possibly can and are desperate to win,but then just simply don’t do it. Absolutely no way do Nottingham Panthers do everything they possibly could to win.

I never claimed they do.. end of the day they spend what they want. They set a budget pre season and use that all.. weather that's a small , moderate or big budget nobody knows

One thing really concerns me now. Most fans overall are pleased with the changes that have come about this season. Most of us are pleased that this team has managed to engage us again. Most people saw this as a rebuild season and were prepared to accept not competing for the title(Argueably the club have exceeded expectations there). The concern I have is that peoples attitudes could change very quickly depending on how the last 10 games go. It is perfectly reasonable to see us being 5th in the league after this weekend. 2 losses are very possible given the opposition. Equally we could see a little hope for the title creep back in with 2 wins, but it really is on a knife edge. I can easily see a lot of people turning on the team, Gui and Tim if we end up 5th behind Coventry.
For me, I have been re engaged with the club and we have been in a title race until at least the end of Feb. Thats enough for me to be happy with the same set up to get another crack next season.

But the accepted logic that we're spending less than everyone else keeps popping up, as a positive for the current setup, so it works both ways a bit. The future will be judged in the off-season for me. Clearly this year has been much better, things look much brighter than they usually do at this time of year, but what we keep and what we get rid of is the kicker.

But it’s difficult to argue that whilst undoubtedly Panthers spend a top four budget, they could spend more. Not talking silly money more, but some people like me expect the club to bust a gut and be seen to do everything it could to win like the Steelers seem to do. Other people though just seem happy to trot out any excuse they can think of to justify more failure. “Oh we’re rebuilding, other teams have improved, the players are tired, give him time he’s a new coach, other teams have spent more than us” etc etc. There’s always an excuse ! You above all people Pidge have many, many times questioned why Sheffield always seem to want it more and do all they can to win. Love him or loathe him Simmsey is their catalyst for that, he drills winning into their club, but where is Panthers version of Simmsey ? Panthers haven’t got one that’s where. You might be able to or want to watch your team make a half arsed effort and a token gesture, but I don’t and that’s why I see it as a false effort, something of a sham, like why am I spending all this time, effort and money following a team that doesn’t really care and that makes/made me think why bother supporting a team that doesn’t care as much as I do/did.

Bottom line for me is this, the Panthers organisation like to think of themselves as one of the big fish. One league title in 40 years whilst being eclipsed by the real big fish says otherwise.
