As mentioned above, not a classic, but these sort of games rarely are. Apart from periods in the second period, and short spells in the third, Whistle didn't look troubled, but made some good saves none the less. Fife always come with a high forecheck and try to catch us on the break, and in general I think we shut down their style. However, this did impact on our normal play, somewhat. I thought Bulmer and Herr were quiet tonight, with the latter looking tired. The new guy, Tousignant looks quite a character, a bit Bruce Richardson esque, and certainly introduced himself to some of the opposition. Did he deserve MOM? Probably not, as the 25 shot shut out would normally get it, but you cannot ensure the sponsors go with the best player on the night IMHO. Tetlow had a good game, with several well worked passes out of defence as well as a couple of good interception. One of his better games. In the end, we had some luck, but you have to take it when it comes, and we did, and got the required 2 points in regulation. I was thinking he's like Graeme Garden, not the greatest skater, not a regular points getter, but just the job as an agitator.

Important thing is, we won and Steelers lost.
In fact with Cardiff and Belfast splitting their games in regulation, it's a perfect weekend!

Desantis didn't ice after the first period, we need Deutsch back asap That's a worry if in any way "serious".

What happened to the 50-50 tonight or did I miss it. They were still counting tickets so it wasn't announced. They have said it will be on the website tomorrow . Guess as there's no home game until 14/2 the winner will have to get along to the Panthers Office

Been a while since I worked out the goals for/against stats per team, weighted for number of games played... and we're not looking too shabby...
02.02.20 Combined GP GF GF/G Rank GA GA/G Rank Rank BEL 40 122 3.05 7 100 2.50 1 8 CAR 38 128 3.37 3 110 2.89 3 6 COV 39 146 3.74 2 136 3.49 7 9 DUN 40 125 3.13 5 153 3.83 9 14 FIF 40 101 2.53 9 143 3.58 8 17 GLA 39 122 3.13 5 152 3.90 10 15 GUI 37 111 3.00 8 109 2.95 4 12 MAN 39 96 2.46 10 123 3.15 6 16 NOT 38 120 3.16 4 99 2.61 2 6 SHE 42 183 4.36 1 129 3.07 5 6
This may be a bit of a surprise (especially after Wednesday's game, when the whole defensive structure just collapsed in the 3rd period) but we're actually the 2nd best in the league when it comes to goals conceded per game... only Belfast beating us there (bit of a surprise for me, I still thought Cardiff were #1). The other surprise being Coventry in 2nd place when it comes to goals scored per game!
Edited to add... dammit, the formatting went all to hell! Sorry about that... BTW, the last column is the combination of the ranking of goals for AND goals against... to see who comes out on top overall. Us, Cardiff and Sheffield are joint best on 6.

Just looking ahead in the fixtures and seen that 3 of our games in hand on the Steelers will come before we next face them.
We have: Storm (a) Flyers (h) Giants (h) Clan (a)
They have just: Stars (a)
We'll need 6 of 8 to realistically be in touch I think, but that game could be massive. Only fear would be we'd have played 4 games in the preceding 10 days to their 1.

We’ve been strong defensively this season, as a unit we play well and can shut teams out. I think this is why our away form is much better than our home form, on the road we are able to play a defensive game that we thrive in.

I do think that all the contenders will drop points against other teams going down the stretch, no game is easy. Hopefully this break does us some good.

Went from last weekend feeling like we’d blown the league to looking at it now thinking....we’ve still got a shot. At the end of the day, it’s a long shot but a shot none the less.
I actually think Fife did a great job. Contained us for huge chunks of that game. What I liked about our game is that even though the goal wasn’t coming, we didn’t gamble or have our defenceman make risky plays. We stuck to a plan and bided our time.
Defence and goalie combo has been excellent this weekend. The guys deserve a break now, get some rest in for that final push.
