Why do we insist on using the term 'import quality brit'?
O'Connor is clearly a quality player but because he's so good, he is 'import quality'.
So, on the flipside, if an import was poor, would he be described as a 'Brit quality import'?

So, on the flipside, if an import was poor, would he be described as a 'Brit quality import'? I've always used the term. To my mind it describes a Brit whom we would sign to our team even if there wasn't an import limit. O'Connor and Dowd would fall into that category, I'm not sure any of our other Brits would. I'm looking forward to seing how much he has improved since going away. Unfortunatly I will miss the next home game against the Steelers, but I'm sure to catch one of the 3,789 games we get to play against them this season.

O'Connor could undoubtedly earn more over in Russia, but it's nice to see someone put their happiness ahead of money. Which Russian team offered him this deal? Sounds rather unlikely tbh. The import limit hasn't changed since his toys left the pram, but his scruples have, I would suspect when he looked at the financial reality of a Brit in the EIHL. It's a good signing for Sheffield, he's a good player. But just like Lacho and Lee for us hanging around instead of heading for the continent, Farmer and Myers returning home from NA as quickly as they got there, the fact is if you're a decent British player, the import rules mean you're worth your weight in gold over here, so there's no financial reason to chance your arm in a more difficult environment. I don't blame them for hanging around, but it'd make them better hockey players to play in better leagues, which would make GB better, which I think was Ben's complaint to begin with.

Regards Doom I take your point and TBH I used to use that term too. I still feel the term 'import quality' on the whole is to much of a sweeping generalisation though. If somebody called Dowd (or Lachowicz) an import quality Brit forward, which Import forward would they be comparing them too? David Ling, Jordan Fox? DAB? Joonas Saari, Robert Liscak? All imports, worlds apart in terms of 'quality' though. Same on D, if you called O'Connor (or Steve Lee) an import quality d-man, which import D are they being compared too? Eric Werner, Angel Nikolov? Mario Larocque, Ed Hill? Again all imports, all worlds apart in terms of 'quality'. Quality is quality irrespective of Nationality.

Good signing for them because of the illegal import limit. The player is a total hypocrite. Will command a high salary purely for his passport.

A great signing for them, will we get a response from Panthers......somehow I doubt it.
Yet another classic case of one team that does whatever they can to win and another that does all it can to save money !

With the import limit going up this year and the next few years I can't see his being a problem for us. We have quality Brits and soon going to have extra imports so I don't think we lose in any way really. That's not to say I wouldn't have take o'connor immediately but Brits will become less valuable as the import limit rises. Which is what o'connor was probably complaining about pre season.

If they do all they can, why haven't they got a big squad of imports like you say we should have.

God there's some mardy Panthers fans in this thread.
Top Brit player, great signing for Steelers and the league imo.

Why is it an exaggerated post Shorty,it's nothing of the sort and I have never said we should have a big squad of imports. I expect us to have a squad containing at least several quality imports and also perhaps one versatile spare, when Robinson leaves we will have neither of those.
Sheffield already had a very good squad of both Brits and mostly good quality imports, but it still didn't stop them finding a way to keep O'connor to further boost an already very good team.
Why do we never seem to find a way,the only thing we are good at lately is penny pinching.......unless it involves something to do with a jaunt in Europe !

Well you did previously suggest that our CHL roster should be one that we have every season, so that implies carrying extra imports.
Sheffield have won 2 trophies out of the last 12 available, so they do not do whatever they can to win.
As such, I believe your post was exaggerated.

Look at it this way Shorty.
Whatever they can afford to spend,we can afford and more,so you tell me why we have got the average roster we have compared to what they have. The league is littered with new quality players this year, yet other than the "short term" Robinson we didn't sign any of them.
Weeks and weeks ago I predicted which guys they were and I wasn't wrong,Roy,Fretter,Keith,Hotham,Sawada etc are all doing the business, yet I get flamed because "resume's mean nothing" or so people say......yeah right,go have a look and see if my predictions were wrong,i wasn't.
If you knew why we have lost some of the good players we have had you would be amazed.
The reason Sheffield have won very little the last few years is because they haven't spent and they haven't spent because they couldn't afford it. Now they are on an even keel again with a decent owner they are spending, they have a team of good quality imports and now the two highest paid Brits in the league.

Braehead lose to Belfast on Friday. We win our games in hand and go top of the league by 1 point. Still think we have an "average" team?

So we'll be a one man team. Simples stop Robinson and you beat panthers. Im staggered there hasn't been any roster changes yet tbh

Im staggered there hasn't been any roster changes yet tbh On the creativity part Robinson is working well and it would take a better team than anyone in the EIHL to stop him (apart from getting him thrown out earlier in the season) as he has a plan B and C too.

I don't know why I keep coming on here and defending your team and Coach, but, look at your record so far. Why the complaints? You've beaten Devis, Giants, Steelers and even Hamburg! You'll be there at the seasons end but this season will be more balanced with Steelers, Devils and Braehead catching up with the Giants. Devils are the team to beat probably and will bully most teams. With Dowd and Morency back and O'Connor in the team, Steelers will be expected to shine. Got to say they will have 3 great lines and possibly run 4 lines with Ferrara. Nil desperandum!

Indeed we have beaten those teams Doug.....and we have also lost to Sheffield,Coventry,Cardiff,Braehead,Hull and Fife.
Thank god Edinburgh and Dundee are really crap this year or it might have been a clean sweep of losses eh !

Iginla, whilst I do see where you are coming from and to an extent agree, I do think you are being a little bit harsh right now. Your points total isn't far behind others even if the performances haven't matched it.
My own view is that you lack firepower so your games will be closer than you are probably used to over the last few years. But, your defence is good and (if he stays fit) K-Wall is one of the best so you will do OK.
It's OK saying "we are the richest", "we should sign that player that Sheffield have" it's not always as straight forward as that. You only have to look at Ben O'Connor for that. We could chuck money at Clarke and Lachowicz but I doubt we'd see them pulling on an orange shirt.

I think it will be very tight this season between Sheffield, Nottingham, Belfast, Cardiff and Braehead.
I've seen Belfast once and thought they probably edged the game, even though we beat them.
Cardiff are the best team I've seen and probably edged both of our games against them, although poor discipline cost them in the last game at the arena.
Nottingham were probably the worst of the three that I've seen to date, but I think there's been a bit of a post CHL hangover which explains the poor result at home to Hull.
I still think Nottingham will be there or thereabouts when it comes to silverware. They probably lack some toughness and require another 30 goal a season player, but they have arguably the best netminder, the top goal scoring Brit and as much depth in the squad as anybody else.
Tweaks are probably needed, but I don't think they need major surgery to the squad.
Regards
Doom
