I've read a rumour that Calder has turned down a move to Belfast and is in talks with another Elite League club along with a couple in the EPL. Someone has mentioned that the club COULD be us - with McDoanld going out - does anyone think there is any truth to this?

I'm sure that we couldn't be ruled out... but my gut tells me no on this one. For a start, this guy has been Coventry through-and-through... and they're hurting at the moment. Bringing Calder back could be a bit of a talisman for them... something that I'm sure won't have escaped the attention of the Blaze management.
As for us... we could afford him, I'm sure. Question is - would he be considered as being 'the right fit' for the team? We've got a young, speedy team - Calder's nearly 35. Doesn't rule him out, of course... but might be a check-mark in the minus column?

He's a winger so wouldn't be a like for like replacement for McDonald.
He's a top player at this level for sure but would swapping an average centre for a good winger turn us into potential league champs, I don't think so. We've tried playing top players out of position before and it never really worked.

Calder would be an inspired signing. Experienced, knows the EIHL inside out, great player to boot. If we really do think we can turn around this slump and go after the title then signing him would be a big big play by Panthers.
I think he'll go to Coventry.

We've tried playing top players out of position before and it never really worked. Fair point. However... speculating that he did actually sign for us and that he'd replace McDonald... would he be played out of position? Stick Matt Myers back on as centre, along with Levers and Ryan, and put Calder out on the wing where he's at home. Whether this would weaken our already uninspiring face-off prowess is debatable... but (assuming he can maintain his points production of the last few years) putting Calder out on the wing would be likely to boost things up somewhat. All guesswork, of course... and I doubt he'll be coming here anyway.

Could Coventry afford him though? surely they've got all their injured players wages to pay for and thompson said they might have to just run with what they've got.. which indicates they dont have much monies.

You see I'd be quite happy to swap out Heerema and McDonald and get Calder in, Just my opinion - we do need a centre but I doubt we'll get one.

Would like to see Calder in a Panthers shirt I'd like to have seen him in a Panthers shirt in his prime. These days I could leave it tbh. I'm sure he'd still do a job, but he looked on the wane somewhat last season, compared to what he had been.

Didnt Sheffiled expect to sign him not long ago. With their new found millions, he could quite easily end up there.
Waste of time him going to Coventry. They only have the playoffs to look forward to.

I'm slightly mixed on this one, sure he was good in his prime, but will he be good for us to push for any honours? Also, the only time when I thought wow was only when he was paired with Carlson, so perhaps that would mean that you would need both together, but who knows. It's a shame Edinburgh are struggling with virtually everything at the moment, with more players said to be leaving, here , as I would have suggested a move there from Calder, wouldn't have been too bad of an option and seen whether Scott Neil would offer him the coaching role as I remember Calder was meant to have been coach at Braehead. So where do I think he will move to? Probably Coventry, Sheffield, Newcastle or as rumoured a drop down to the EPL. Why Coventry? Just for the simple fact of, he has served them well and also that they now need to replace Fussey. Why Sheffield? They was interested in him earlier in the season and as someone else has mentioned, with Sheffield now having extra cash, they could look at signing him again. Why Newcastle? My thinking here was because Stewart is there and also these guys are short of players at the moment. Why EPL? Not sure why he would want to, especially when there is a few teams short of players in the EIHL at the moment, but I had to choose EPL as it is a rumour.

Calder and Carson used to rip everytime apart. Sorry for picking this up ;D but I think Carlson probably the better player. As an aside my personal view is that Calder has had a terrific career in the EIHL with Blaze but time and tide and all that. Looked off the pace last season.

If McDonald doesn't play tomorrow that's surely makes him leaving a dead cert?

If McDonald doesn't play tomorrow that's surely makes him leaving a dead cert? The alex Penner press release says that McDonald has been ill all week so he might not play because of that.
