What do people expect from a failed ex hockey player who now orders equipment and sucks up to GM at every oportunity. Only good for filling water bottles as it is the only time in AG's career when he has experienced having any bottle at all. I've known of this guy since his not so illustrious hockey career commenced and his ending as a glorified water boy.

Widnes Wild held back the Deeside Dragons celebrations as they held on for a 7-7 tied game. The Dragons required just two points to clinch the title but that will now have to wait for another night. It was interesting that one of Dragons Head Coach Lol Paul's gripes was that little respect was given to his Brit players with too many people pointing out the imports contribution to the Dragons success this season. Well tonight against a fierce Wild who were leading 3-1 at the end of the first period the Dragons might have lost this one without their imports. Stats Palak 5+0 Supa 1+1 from the 7 goals scored in the game. Supa's one assist was on James Parson's goal, the only Brit's goal in the game. The Dragons definitely will be hunting for the funding to keep these two on board as other clubs will be in the hunt for their signatures, particularly Palak's. Nottingham Lions went up to Altrincham with 13 out skaters today and fought a real edge of the seat battle for the points. They came away with the spoils as they beat the Aces 1-2. Period Scores: 0-0/0-2/1-0. Scorers: Stuart Parker 2+0, Connor Glossop 0+1, Luke Thomas 0+1, Ben Wood 0+1, Ondrej Pniok 0+1. Great to see the veteran Stuart Parker still showing some of the youngsters how it's done. The Lions put 40 shots on the Aces net and Thomas Hovell returned a 96.30% save rate kicking aside 26 of the 27 shots on his net. Excellent hard fought result. The Aces were desperate for this one as they chase for a play off spot and they are still in with a shout if not a bit more muted. The Aces now need the Lions or Blackburn Eagles to lose a couple of games and looking at the run in to the end of season, the Lions have possibly the hardest task ahead of them with certainly a couple of really tough games. Awaiting the Blackburn Eagles v Coventry Blaze result.

Games in the Laidler Conference this weekend. Saturday: Deeside Dragons v Hull Jets. The Dragons only require 4 points to wrap up the season and gain promotion and have two games this weekend in which to achieve that goal. The Jets will battle tonight as that is in their nature as a team but I feel the Dragons have far too much and should win this one. Sunday: Blackburn Eagles v Coventry Blaze. The Eagles are determined to overhaul the Nottingham Lions and grab third place in the conference. It is these games against the teams in the lower reaches of the conference that they must win in order to keep the pressure on to ensure progress. Deeside Dragons take the short trip to Widnes Wild in what should prove a bit of a decider for both teams. A Dragons win gives them the championship and on the home ice of the team in second place, so a cracker on the cards as the Wild will attempt to avoid that result at all costs. Should the Dragons win the Wild can turn their total attention to holding on to second place and a play off spot for promotion. The Dragons are going to take the conference of that there is no doubt, in my book anyway. The Lions have a major battle once again as for the third weekend the boys hit the road this time up to Altrincham to meet the Aces. The battle is for a play off spot as the Aces have a good chance of overhauling either the Eagles or the Lions should they keep grinding out the results and the other two letting their games slip. The Eagles and the Lions have yet to play each other twice both games on Blackburn's ice. On Sunday the Lions need to put in the type of performance they did against the Widnes Wild to get a positive result.

Sunday's Results: The Lions have bragging rights over the second place Widnes Wild as over the four games played this season the Lions have won 2 Lost 1 and tonight up at Widnes the Lions tied the game 5-5. Period Scores: 2-1/2-2/1-2 with the Wild having to chase the game and grabbing their 5th goal in the final 3 minutes. Scorers: Connor Glossop 3+1, Stuart Parker 1+2, Ondrej Pniok 1+0, Adz Andrews 0+2, Ben Wood 0+1, Slav Ksprzak 0+1, Joe Gretton 0+1, and Cameron Pywell 0+1. A well deserved MVP to Connor Glossop, tonight's hat trick hero. Altrincham Aces remain in the chase for a play off spot with a tight 4-5 win at Hull Jets. It never stops as the Lions are back on the road again next Sunday to play in a very crucial game against the Altrincham Aces with the home side on a late winning streak and looking to snatch the Lions present play off place.

Games in the Laidler Conference this weekend: Saturday: Blackburn Eagles v Hull Jets, and Coventry Blaze v Bradford Bulldogs. The Eagles on form should bring down the Jets but the Hull side are usually no pushover. A big bearing on this game might revolve around how many players actually decide to travel from Hull? Coventry v Bradford is an intesting one as against the run of form the Blaze actually beat the 'Dogs' up at Bradford last weekend with the Blaze moving from bottom place and planting the 'Dogs' in that unenviable last spot. Might be a bit of a battle in this one. Sunday: Altrincham Aces make the trip to Hull to play the Jets. The Aces are definitely getting down to business but still in need of points to grab a play off slot. The Lions hit the road and travel to meet Widnes Wild for the last time this season. The Wild sit in second place and a play off spot for promotion should they hold that position for the remainder of the season, which really they should as they are definitely good enough. Uphill battle for our lads but they have taken the points on two occasions with the Wild looking to even the score with a home win having beaten the Lions once this season. It would appear that Matt Bradbury and his 14 on the road players, last Saturday, upset Lol Paul Head Coach of the Dragons with his tactics. He accused the Nottingham Head Coach of attempting to get some of his players kicked out of the game through intimidation leading to big penalties. Now lets be honest his 21 players including 2 top imports were up against a massively short benched team on the Dragons home ice. The Lions team also travelled minus 7 senior players and bolstered by a number of Nottingham u18s players and they gave the Dragons a bit of a run around and old Lol did not like it one bit. The Dragons won the game 7-5 with Nottingham managing two periods even scored and losing the middle period 2-0. I think old Lol did not like the fact that the boys would not roll over and concede the game in front of a big crowd. Old Lol considered the Lions and the Head Coach's tactics well out of order and felt that in Matt the Lions had a bitter and twisted man. He also did not like the fact that Matt pointed out that without Palak and Supa the Deeside team, having not strengthened significantly, other than by those two might have possibly struggled a bit more this season. Old Lol took exception to this suggestion and pointed to his Brits and their contribution to his team who had only lost once, and that was to Nottingham earlier in the season. I just thought that I might throw the odd stat in at this point: of the 168 goals scored by the Dragons this season Palak and Supa have contributed 80 goals and assisted on 54 of the other goals. By my reckoning of the 168 scored Palak and Supa played a part in 134 of the goals scored. I am afraid 'Old Lol' 'Old Pal' you cooked your own goose with that call. On the physical aspects of the game your side was intimidated and out muscled by the kids and even Slav Kasprzak, not known as a fighter, absolutely destroyed one of your guys with one punch. Next season, if you are still around that is, you and your team will be mixing it with a couple of our North Eastern friends of old and a few other street wise teams who may have already tuned in to your bleating about the game against a depleted Lions and your nonsensical personal attack on the Nottingham Head Coach. I have refrained from a more stronger analysis of your comments as the Moderators might step in, and rightly so. Nuff said.

Tonight's Results: Bradford Bulldog's v Coventry Blaze ended with the Blaze taking the points with a 2-5 result that moves them up from last place and dropping the 'Dogs' into the bottom slot. A very short benched Lions met a full strength Dragons and gave the leaders a bit of an initial shock as they held out against the Deesiders onslaught but missed out with a 7-5 end result. Period scores: 2-2/2-0/3-3. Again penalties took their toll with at one stage 6 of the Lions 12 skaters cooling their heels. What occurred was possibly the Dragons reaction to a depleted team giving them a good run for their money. Scorers: Joe Humphries 2+1, Connor Glossop 2+1, Cameron Pywell 1+1, Rob Perks 0+1, Joseph Gretton 0+1. Although losing out in this game the Lions put up an excellent team performance and did not back down when intimidated. The Lions managed vto keep Filip Supa quiet as the top import failed to score whilst his equally impressive import team mate Adrian Palak picked up 3+2. As said before without the Deesiders imports and other experienced players moving up to the Moralee Conference with the ex Red Hockey financed team life could be somewhat painful in two respects should they decide to physically mix it with the likes of Billingham Stars and the Whitley Bay Warriors. They will lose not only the games but the fights.

Weekend Games:Saturday: A basemennt fight between Bradford Bulldogs and Coventry Blaze takes place in Yorkshire tonight with the 'Dogs' collecting a couple of points given their recent performances. Into the Dragons Lair go the Nottingham Lions as they travel for the last time to 'the land of song', Flintshire that is, to take on, what has been for all teams the impossible, to get a point or two from this Dragons team. Nottingham Lions are the only team this season to get a win on Deesides ice but that seems an awful long way back in the season. Since that major upset the Dragons have destroyed most teams in their path to Laidler Conference victory. There, of course, still hangs the problems related to the recent fall out between Red Hockey's Wayne Scholes and the Flintshire Council with the council taking back the club. With the Dragons looking to move to the NIHL Dv 1 Moralee Conference next season the fall out might have massive implications regarding operating the team and player contracts, which if unresolved could prove a disaster for the club with much tougher competition ahead. Anyway on form the Lions are given no chance in this game so nowt to lose! Plenty of opportunity for some Nottingham hopefuls to get some valuable ice time. On to Sunday's games: Widnes Wild, having strengthened of late, take on the Blackburn Eagles in what should prove an interesting encounter. Widnes are strengthening their hold on second spot in the Laidler Conference and should take this one but it should't be an easy win given Blackburn's ability to surprise. Altrincham Aces, fresh from their 1-2 win in Nottingham last Sunday, take on the Hull Jets. With Altrincham desperate to end in the top four they will go all out to put this one to bed and get the winning points on the board. The Aces have a relatively steady run in to the end of the season and plenty of opportunities to claw back the points deficit over the present third and fourth placed teams particularly as the two teams in those play off spots have yet to play each other another two times. Nottingham still have both Widnes and Altrincham away as well so the Aces are still very much in the chase. Plenty still to play for.

Tonight's Result: The Lions gave Samantha Bolwell the nod giving her the opportunity to open for the first time at home in nets. A massive challenge against a team that have the ability to really bag goals in the Altrincham Aces. It looked a bit dire in the first five minutes as the Aces raced into a two goal lead. Following this fairly torrid start Samantha settled and started to get on top of the game making some excellent stops including a breakaway that could have been a certain goal. As it turned out at the end of the first period it was a 1-2 scoreline as Rob Perks grabbed his second goal of the weekend. The next two periods ended up scoreless and that in itself is testament to the performance of the team as they attempted to get something out of the game that they truly deserved. The Lions outshot the Aces but the night belonged to the Altrincham team as they held on for the points. Samantha Bolwell lasted the full 60mins knocking aside 31 of the 33 shots on her net. This result for her must be a real confidence boost ahead of the planned GB games later this year. It is a credit to the under 18s that several of the players played four games of hockey this weekend two for their own team following that up with two games for the Lions, now that is dedication to your sport. Matt commented that these lads still had something in the tank after twelve periods of hockey and late nights to boot. Period Scores: 1-2/0-0/0-0. Goals: Rob Perks 1+0, Ben Wood 0+1, Kieran Raynor 0+1. Kieran Raynor a well earned MOM. The Lions took a bit of a battering from the officials but that appears to be the norm at present for some reason, unbeknown certainly to me. Stuart Parker's 10 min misconduct penalty was an absolute farce and one wonders what goes on in some of these officials heads on occasions. Anyway game over with lots of positives except for the end result, of course.

Tonight's results: Bradford Bulldogs had a good crack at high flying Widnes Wild but lost out to a 5-8 result. Nottingham Lions had a bit of a frustrating night at Coventry as decisions by the officials disrupted any kind of rhythm that the team tried to inject into the game. This situation gradually took it's toll on the Lions who ended up going into the third period with a 0-2 deficit to overcome. The Lions set about the task and fought their way back into the game before eventually taking the lead. At 2-3 up the Blaze pulled the keeper and the Lions grabbed the fourth goal. Period Scores: 1-0/1-0/0-4. Scorers: Luke Thomas, Rob Perks, Samuel Jackson, and Daniel 'Bingo' Hazeldine. Daniel Hazeldine was the worthy MOM after a sterling performance.

Weekend Games:Saturday: Bradford Bulldogs v Widnes Wild and Coventry Blaze v Nottingham Lions. Widnes Wild, who have taken the second place spot in the Laidler Conference, should, on form, win this one quite comfortably but the dogs did come close to beating the Dragons in what in the end was a tied game. Coventry have managed two victories this sesaon both on home ice and they have run some top teams fairly close therefore cannot be taken for granted. In the last home game against the Lions the Blaze lost out to a 1-3 game but it was a very tight game that could have quite easily have swung in favour of the home team. This will definitely be a sixty minute game with no time for taking the proverbial foot off the pedal. Sunday's Games: Just the one and this could be a corker as Altrincham Aces visit Nottingham for the second and last time this season. Honours are about even between these two with the Lions gaining a 6-3 home win and then losing out in the return game 5-1 up at Altrincham. All to play for as the Lions still need to keep putting up points as they try to make the end of season play offs and the Aces desperate for wins to strengthen their bid for honours also. Could definitely prove a feisty affair this one and a real knife edge game for both teams. The Aces will definitely want this one. No predictions just hoping we get the results. Panthers up at Manchester at the home of the Aces so hockey fans not wanting a night off and a cheap hockey fix could see a Manchester team playing a Nottingham team here at home. You will be very welcome and your support genuinely appreciated.

Report from the Chester Chronicle today. Deeside Dragons: Flintshire Council and Red Hockey in war of words as authority assume control of club.
Breakdown in negotiations between Red Hockey and local authority sees company withdraw financial backing for league leaders
Deeside Dragons have been plunged into crisis after a breakdown in negotiations between Flintshire Council and the club’s backers Red Hockey resulted in the local authority taking control of the Laidler Conference leaders.
Red Hockey, owned by businessman Wayne Scholes, assumed control of the Dragons, who play at the Deeside Leisure Centre, in July and, with their financial backing have seen the club enjoy considerable success on the ice thus far this season.
Flintshire Council had been in discussions with Red Hockey since July with regards to investing in the arena and the team but have broken off negotiations, citing Red Hockey’s ‘inability to conclude financial and contractual arrangements.’
The decision has sparked a war of words between Red Hockey and the local authority as casts huge doubt over what the immediate future holds for the Dragons.
Flintshire Council have argued that their reluctance to hand over full control to Red Hockey is down to ensuring the protection of the the club and ice hockey in Deeside and have assumed responsibility for the club with immediate effect.
Ian Bancroft, Chief Officer Organisational Change said: “Since the Summer the Council has been in negotiations with Red Hockey Ltd to develop the ice arena and the team.
“These negotiations have broken down with both parties seeking an exit strategy to conclude relations.
“At all times Flintshire County Council has tried to reach agreement in a positive manner with Red Hockey Ltd.
“However, despite best efforts this could not be achieved given Red Hockey’s inability to conclude financial and contractual arrangements with us. The Council made clear it’s position to Red Hockey early last Thursday after seeking unsuccessfully a number of reassurances through normal communication channels about Red Hockey’s willingness to complete contracts.
“The Council is committed to ensuring protection of the interests of the team and ice hockey in Deeside. Insecurity and indecision about future arrangements would not have helped this to be achieved. As a result, the Council will be supporting the team to move forward with the intention of ensuring its continued involvement in the league this year and the future operation of the team.
This all appears very strange as the council were happy to hand over the club as they, the council, were not prepared to continue whatever funding was required to keep the club afloat. A sad episode in a season where the Dragons remain virtually unbeatable and ready for promotion. To be fair the Dragons as the Flintshire Freeze have been trying for numerous years to develop a winning team and this year it came to fruition. It is important that the Dragons hold on to their experienced players, coach, and their free scoring imports in order to progress.

News Released this evening re Deeside Dragons
Red Hockey have confirmed that Flintshire County Council have ended negotiations concerning the transfer of ownership of Deeside Dragons and taken back control of the NIHL North club with immediate effect.
Wayne Scholes, CEO of Red Hockey, commented: “We’re extremely disappointed with the manner in which FCC have chosen to conduct themselves, having ignored all normal channels of communication and announced their decision to Red Hockey’s staff immediately before Saturday’s game.
“We’re particularly disappointed for the Dragons staff and fans, with the team being on the verge of a championship win.
“FCC have acted in a way that can only cause disruption at a key point in the season and cast doubt over the future of a number of vital coaching and team members.
“Whilst Red Hockey have made offers to resolve these issues amicably, the recent behavior of FCC has denied the club and the area the opportunity of substantial further investment, building on the current season of success, and suggests that they are intent on a course of conduct which can only be destructive to the interests of the club and the fans.
“We wish to thank the staff and fans at Deeside Dragons and wish them the very best for the future.”
Sources close to the club have informed BIH that Flintshire County Council will release their own statement in due course. One can only assume that the funding for the Head Coach and the two imports are now in jeopardy given the part of the statement regarding coaching and team members.
No news regarding Manchester Phoenix as yet.

Tonight's games: Widnes Wild 10 Coventry Blaze 3. Deeside Dragons had a relatively easy time on the road with a 3 -8 win against Hull Jets to further cement their place as potential conference champions. The major concern for all teams icing under the Red Hockey banner, including the Dragons, is the rumours around the allegations that financial problems are hitting Red Hockey in very serious ways with bills not being paid and players wages also not being paid. There are also rumours that suppliers of services to the teams are drying up due to unpaid bills. Hopefully the troubles, if true, can be easily resolved without the clubs suffering any lasting harm? Still awaiting the Blackburn Eagles v Bradford Bulldogs result.

Weekend games: Saturday: Deeside Dragons continued their impressive run for the title as they beat Altrincham Aces 8-0. Sunday: Deeside Dragons travel to play Hull Jets, Widnes Wild v Coventry Blaze, should be a relatively routine home win. The final game of the weekend is Blackburn Eagles v Bradford Bulldogs, now this should be a strightforward home win, but the last time I predicted an Eagles win against the Dog's I got it spectacularly wrong so a bit of an uneasy prediction. The Lions next game is on the road against Coventry Blaze on 23 January with a home game on 24 January against Altrincham Aces.

Sunday's Results: Widnes Wild put Altrincham Aces to the sword with an emphatic 9-1 scoreline and should now move into second place in the conference. The Lions faced a rampant Deeside Dragons who were worthy winners with a 2-8 scoreline. To be fair the Lions were really not in this one almost from the start of the game but at least attempted to make a game of it and had their chances but the conversion rate to shots on goal proved poor. Period Scores: 1-4/0-2/1-2. Scorers: Stuart Parker 1+ 0, Daniel Hazledine 1+0, Max Bennet 0+2, Luke Thomas 0+1.

Saturday's Results: Coventry gain their second win of the season with a 2-1 scoreline against the Hull Jets. The Dragons roar on with an emphatic 10-3 win over the Blackburn Eagles with Palak and Supa getting 6 of the Dragons goals and 4 assists. Absolutely blowing teams away with ease and looking for the conference trophy to move from last year's winners the Solihull Barons to Flintshire. It would take a major collapse for the Dragons to now let this campaign slip through their collective fingers. The Dragons come to Nottingham on Sunday 10 January looking to continue their amazing run by pulling the Lions claws.

Weekend Games: Saturday: Coventry Blaze are visited by Hull Jets and the Blaze will be hoping to add more points to the only two they have achieved to date this season. Blackburn Eagles have the unenviable task of attempting to get a point or two at the home of the current conference leaders the Deeside Dragons. Last weekend the Dragons scored 17 goals with only 2 against in their two wins, one of which was on the road. Blackburn in contrast were beaten by Bradford Bulldogs in a game that the Eagles certainly expected to win comfortably. Sunday: Widnes Wild will desperately hoping for a big game and a win against Altrincham Aces. After their visit to Nottingham last Sunday the Wild saw Deeside Dragons pull further away at the top as the Wild lost precious points to the Lions. Altrincham Aces suffered a bad loss at home against the Dragons and so must be concerned about their trip to Widnes who will be still smarting from their recent loss. On Sunday night the mighty Dragons make their final trip of the season to the NIC looking to equal their last result over here when they beat the Lions quite comfortably. Of course they were only paying the Lions back for the almost equal result when our boys gave the Dragons a right going over on their home ice. It is now almost certain that a win for the Dragons will virtually assure them of promotion at the season's end. This should be a heck of a game if both teams play to their full potential as any slip in concentration could prove a disaster. The Dragons come to Nottingham with two of the most lethal import forwards in Filip Supa and Adrian Palak and a strong compliment of experienced Brits. Neutralising the Dragon's strengths will be a high priority but achieving that is a big task but certainly not an impossible one. Not sure how many of the younger players are available as their junior club teams may have games to play this weekend.

Tonight's Results: Red Hockey Deeside Dragons had a massive away win at the Altricham Aces 1-8 and are pulling further away at the top of the conference. Hull Jets got the win against Bradford Bulldogs 3-2. The biggest game for us was in the Arena tonight where the Nottingham Lions came up against the Widnes Wild. The Wild seeking promotion found their ambitions slightly dented as the Lions came out of this one with a home win 3-2. For Widnes that man and Head Coach Scott McKenzie scored again and appeared to be their most dangerous player if allowed a little too much space. Period scores: 2-1/0-0/1-1. Late into the game the Lions held a 3-1 lead but into the final five minutes were reduced to 3 skaters with 2 sitting penalties. Widnes scored and the Lions then had to see out the remainder of one remaining penalty going 4 on 5 but held on and then saw out the game. Scorers: Ondrej Pniok 1+0, Jamie Hovell 1+0, Slav Kasprzak 1+0, Stuart Parker 0+1, Joseph Gretton 0+1. MOM and a welcome return in Tom Hovell's absence of Alan Levers who played an absolute blinder with a 95.74% save rate. Another monster game next Sunday as the all conquering Deeside Dragons visit the NIC for the last time this season.

Saturday's Results: As expected Deeside Dragons coasted their game 9-1 against the Coventry Blaze. A bit of an upset at Bradford as the Bulldogs beat the Blackburn Eagles 4-3 with their new import making a bit of a difference for the home team. Heard along the grapevine that Connor Glossop has signed a two way deal with Manchester Storm and iced for them against the Steelers tonight. A big step for a player who is yet to see out his final year as a junior club player. He will be a Lions player primarily but will be available for Manchester Storm games at other times in agreement with the Lions management. A big step up for one of the Nottingham Junior/Lions young up and coming players. It has been agreed that the Lions can play out of the Arena on Sunday against the Widnes Wild.

Weekend Games:Saturday: Blackburn Eagles take the trip over to the Bradford Bulldogs with the potential of overtaking the Lions and taking second place in the conference. Should be a win for a very strong Blackburn team. Top of the table Red Hockey's Deeside Dragons entertain, very resevedly, the Coventry Blaze who have yet to move out of the basement, conference wise. On paper a formality for the Dragons and a further chance of clear water between them and the chasing pack. Sunday: Bradford Bulldogs pay a visit to the Hull Jets, Deeside Dragons travel to play Altrincham Aces, but the game of the night for us here in Nottingham is Lions v Widnes Wild. The Wild are considered best placed to make the end of season promotion play off should Deeside Dragons win automatic promotion, which should be the case given the Dragons present form. The Wild were beaten by the Lions earlier in the eason with a stunning 2-4 game at The Silver Blades up in Widnes. The Wild returned the favour with a slightly better result beating the Lions 1-4. So honours even and the Wild knowing that they need to keep on winning because Blackburn Eagles and the Lions are both capable of sending the Wild away pointless on their night. The Wild have a formidable strike force with player coach Scott McKenzie and others well capable of hitting the back of the net. In Greg Ruxton they have a solid netminder who has certainly earned his corn this season allowing his team mates more scope up front. This one promises to be a good game with me predicting absolutely nothing as this game has the potential to swing either way. Dependent upon results this weekend there could be changes in the positions of the chasing three teams but with the Red Hockey Dragons still leading the pack and with points in hand. The Lions v the Wild is certainly worth a look so with no Panthers Sunday why not give the boys a shout, they will certainly appreciate the support. Face Off: 7.30 on the Olympic Rink.

Big game last night as a short bench Deeside Dragons travelled to a very strong and confident Blackburn Eagles. The game ended with a tense but hard fought 5-5 scoreline with the Dragons always chasing the goal hungry Eagles who would have loved to be the second team to beat the current conference leaders this season. The Dragons should be thankful that both of their imports were available as between them they scored 4 of their 5 goals. Blackburn are now on level points with Widnes Wild who share 3rd place behind the Nottingham Lions, but with games in hand. As it so happens the Wild hit town next Sunday for their third encounter with the Lions and with both teams on a win apiece this could prove a very interesting encounter as the Wild are seeking promotion and need every point available.
