Panthers ace Clarke out to make up for lost time
07:00 - 27-August-2009
TOP-GUN David Clarke says he has a lot of time to make up after missing 40 games through injury over the past two seasons.
But after suffering a broken leg, broken ankle and concussion in recent years, Nottingham Panthers' leading British sharp-shooter says he has no intention of changing the way he plays.
"I suppose I've been pretty unlucky, but it comes with the turf," said Clarke, who starts his sixth season with the club this weekend at the Hull P&O Channel Trophy tournament.
"Unfortunately, injuries are part and parcel of sport, particular a contact sport like hockey. The way I play, getting to the net and taking punishment, means I am always close to the edge.
"But that's what I do. There is more to my game than point scoring. It gets pretty dirty around the net at times but I've been doing it all my career.
"That has made me what I am and nothing will change."
Despite missing 20 games last season, Clarke still finished as Panthers' joint-third leading goalscorer.
And that set him up to finish his punctuated year by helping Great Britain to a bronze medal in the World Championships in Poland, where he again finished leading goalscorer for his side.
"I have to admit, my tanks were running on empty by the end," Clarke added.
"So I just had to obey doctor's orders for once and take a break. I didn't do much for four weeks but I felt so guilty and now it's gym, gym and more gym.
"I want to be ready for when the season starts and there was no one happier when we got back into that room on the first day of training this week."
