Can anyone tell me what the format of the cup is, should (lets hope) panthers progress.
Do teams from the big strong European leagues (Sweden, DEL, Czech) join in the next stage, I know Ukraine do as thats where its staged.?

Minsk mate in November then the super finals are in Russia in Jan, in the final group 3 of the 4 teams are pre qualified and 2 of those are Omsk (Russian champs) and Tampere (Finnish champs) with all due respect i would not want to be facing those 2, Omsk have genuine NHL quality players as they pay as much as they do in NA. Tampere are always in the top 10 rankings in Europe.

The old European Cup 65/66 to 96/97 was taken over by the European Hockey League 96/97 to 99/00 and after a lull the European Champions Cup was started in 04/05.....the then Federations Cup in 94/95 to 95/96 was a lesser classed competition for the likes of 'other' clubs (a bit like a UEFA Cup I guess) .This transformed into the now Continental Cup which actually houses some powerful teams , given byes as Pidge says.
The Super Cup 97-2000 had the Euro Hockey Leagus play the winners of the Continental.Similar again to footballs Super Cup situation.
If your interested to know also, the old days (early century) clubs played against each other 1904 to 1909.The Germans holding International Trophy events 1908/9/10. Thre origianl Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG) Championships apart from European events since 1920 had three Championships ( a sort of unofficial World Championships) when Nations started playing each other in 1912,13 and 14. GB entered the SUMMER Olympic demonstration Ice-Hockey event in 1920 and of course the rest is history we know well as Olympic,World contests. Although some years had just Olympics and others both organised in the same year.
Of course the LIGH is now operating as the english sounding International Ice-Hockey Federation (IIHF).
