Quote from Paul Thompson “As many know, David Simms has his ear to the ground on the hockey circuit and can help us spread the message of Team GB"[/i]
This conjures up a disturbing mental picture of DS as Tonto to PT's Lone Ranger! What was Tonto's famous line? - "White man speak with forked tongue!"[/i] - mmm ;D

Interesting appointments - Team GB shouldn't suffer from apathy this season that's for sure! With the likes of Thompson, Wilson and Simms at the helm GB should have a much higher profile off the ice and with a bit of luck Thommo can produce the goods on the ice as well. Should be an interesting year.

No Nottingham Panthers involvement either - big suprise-not! Thompson predictability is tiresome indeed pathetic. Odds anyone of Clarke, Myers, Moran, and Cooke being sidelined in favour of some lower ability Brits from Sheffield ,Coventry, and Newcastle HL

No Nottingham Panthers involvement either - big suprise-not! Speaking purely as a Panthers fan, I would probably prefer Mike Ellis not to be lumbered with anything else, especially in his first season here. Speaking as a GB fan, I would have loved to have Mike Ellis as head or assistant coach for GB - but now that 2 of the (probable) 3 coaching positions have been filled from within the EIHL, I would prefer the second assistant coach to come from the EPIHL... give the GB seniors a good, broad base of player familiarity. I agree that it does at least appear to be 'jobs for the boys'... and to be quite honest, for various different reasons, I'm less than overjoyed by any of the appointments so far. Doubtful. I'm no major fan of Thompson, and quite frankly think that Rob Wilson is a disgrace... but I would be very surprised if Clarke, Meyers and Myers were left out... Moran maybe, maybe not (personally I'd choose him as a D-man)... Cookie is going to have to fight for his slot, and there's going to be some competition out there - there would be whether Thompson was coach or not, I think. I don't particularly like the new coaching crew, but I'm not ready to accuse them of every crime under the sun in advance - not until/unless they show it's going to be likely.

What I want to know is will the GB camp be making disparaging remarks about the players & fans of our opposition "to sell tickets"?

Will Simmsey rubbish the Nottingham Panthers players that MAY be picked for the GB team.
It will be strange seeing Simms slag off our players when his best mate has picked them.
I have to say I'm in agreement with the Shagster, I dont want to see Ellis being part of this 'big buddies' set up. Prefer him to give all his energies to the Panthers.
Infact I would be happy if Panthers took the Man Utd approach of 'sod the National teams the only thing that is important is the club, thats who our majority of our fans want to see lift trophies'
I guess I'm a club not country person anyway, and the Thompson and his big chums appointments has just strenghtened my club not country belief.

As much as I despise the barely-literate hate-mongering piece of trash that is Simms, I can't see him doing that. Whilst it may be entertaining to think of him as so irredeemably stupid that he can barely pick his nose, the truth is that - however misguided and contemptible his idea of publicity is - the players on the GB team will be (from the GB point of view) GB players first and club players second. As GB publicist, his job will be to promote the GB teams and players - ALL of them. I can't see even Simms indulging his irrational hatred of us so much that he loses sight of that. I think that this appointment is a bad move, but hey - nobody at IHUK listens to us fans anyway. All I can hope is that he does the job well. I won't hold my breath, you understand... but what else can we do? If that's what you think, then you certainly are not in agreement with me. You will notice I took pains to note that I am both a Panthers fan and a GB fan. Inevitably, there will be times when the two will conflict to some extent - this is one of them. However, I firmly believe that is something that I'd have to work around, and have to accept a less than perfect situation. There are some narrow-minded individuals out there who insist that people can support one or the other, not both... and that anyone who chooses both is somehow a 'lesser' fan. I vehemently disagree.

I would not look too much into thompsons apointments of Wilson and the MOUTH ;D , it was always going to be apointments that he Knew and could trust . On the picking of players for the GB team I am 100% positive that THOMPSON will be his own man on this and the other two are there for assistance in their fields ONLY . To assist the coaching and to manage outside team affairs . I would not be too surprised if the second coaching apointment was not a certain Paul Heavy or Paul hand . A scottish bred GB on the coaching staff is a must

I'd be surprised if Dave Simms was anything other than professional in his work for GB - allowing for the fact that he's not exactly conventional in his approach to most things! ;D Thommo seems to have a desire to succeed in hockey so I'd be amazed if he let personal opinions get in the way of the overall success of the GB team. David Clarke is in line for a career season under Mike Ellis's guidance - difficult to see how anyone could consider leaving him out of the GB setup.

Slight misunderstanding Shagster. Certainly anyonewho has both club and country affiliations is not a 'lesser-fan'' of course not. My own stance is that if there was ever a club country conflict, club always comes first, with no exception. I wouldnt want my club to suffer on the whim or predudice of the Thompson-Simms partnership. Its just my own opinion that Thompson by getting his cronies in to help run the set up is margenilising the GB team, but in the long term that is probably good for the Panthers anyway beacuse Ido believe that our players will now only have a peripheral role in the GB setup. A tadd cynical there methinks HL No surprise that Paul Thompson should bring in people he knows to help him - a very common occurence in football with new managers. I don't see how the GB team will be marginalised by these appointments. It's pretty well on the margins now - these guys should ginger things up a bit and give GB a higher profile. No matter how hard they try to avoid it, there must be a chance that PT and RW will be distracted a little from their day jobs - let's hope Panthers can capitalise if they are.

Paul Thompson wants Todd Kellman on the blueline, as he can now get a GB passport, IMO he'd be a good addition to the blueline

Whilst I have reservations (and that's putting it mildly!) about the individuals chosen so far, I don't have a problem with a coach choosing his staff from people he knows - that's only natural. As long as they are the best candidates, that's fine... it's whether they are truly the best candidates that worries me.... And I have to disagree with you about Panthers players being marginalised. Firstly because I don't believe that Thompson is stupid enough to do so, nor has enough of any kind of grudge against the Panthers that would encourage him down that route. Secondly because we have some of the top Brits in the country, and IMHO the national team would suffer without them. David Clarke - undoubtedly one of the top British forwards around today, plus a proven leader. Danny Meyers - one of the top British D-men around right now (and they're thin on the ground!). Matt Myers - a proven centre.. play-making and face-off-winning a speciality. Paul Moran - not the most skilled player out there, but surely one of the most versatile, plus with decent toughness... when you're playing 5 games in 7 days, that's useful. I may not be that comfortable with Paul Thompson as GB coach, but I don't think he's stupid enough to marginalise the Panthers Brits specifically. What does worry me is the prospect of the GB squad returning to a haven for dual-nationals, and therefore undoing the development work of the past few years (it would also be ironic - more imports in GB at the same time as the EIHL is reducing them!). I have no problem with one or two dual-nats, providing they are the absolute best on offer... but any more than that would be a backward step.

Certainly think Kelman would be a good addition to the GB line-up but as has been mentioned, it would be wrong to include too many dual-national players, particularly as there are now more than a few good Brits in the Elite League.....with a lot of emerging talent. How long before James Neil is part of the set up?
