Thats awful - my heart goes out to the guy, & his loved ones. Sadly, very few sports are without risk.

it is tragic and i offer my sympathies to his family
however at the end of the day though it is a tragic accident he was a willing combatant in a fight he knew the risks as does any player that takes part in a full contact sport.

Its nothing to do with hockey though really, anytime you bang your head on concrete or ice its not going to be nice.
There have been more players die on Football pitches than ice rinks over the last 10 years, whats the excuse there?
Thoughts to his family and friends, and the guy he was fighting, god knows how he feels right now

Hardly a fair or relative comparison, are you saying (because it reads like it) that Football is more dangerous than Hockey or even Boxing, because more people have died on the playing surface. RIP though, and as stated, he knew the risks, he is not the first and certainly wont be the last.

It was a fact banded around a while back, im guessing by the popularity of the phrase that someone had their sources. Im saying nothing of the sort, just that we need to keep it in context and look at what really happened. If there are practical ways of helping, Im all for them. However if an old lady or man falls over in the street and bangs their head, what do you do? Make rubber pavements? Springy ice from next season onwards? They have to be practical and not just some suits in the NHL trying to make themselves feel better. As said, RIP and best thoughts to his family.

always a risk though its not quite as noble a cause as Oldmans original choice of words.
Beuregard loses an eye, comes back for more
Beth whatsername.... breaks neck, comes back for more
This guy just had a complication after the incident (its not like it was the punch that killed him directly)
Doesnt make it any less sad though.
That said though, entirely depends on the teams playing. If it was rec game between 2 teams and he played for fun and wasnt expecting the game to get heated enough to fight then theres something terribly wrong.

Apparently his family have encouraged his fight opponent to get back on the ice as soon as possible, and bear him no malice, or hold him to blame. Very big of them to consider him at this time. Much like Craig Jones family and Andrew Pitt (if anyone watches bike racing.)
Still, a tragic accident - my thoughts go out to his family.

See also Dan Snyder's family and Dany Heatley. For a view on how hard you can hit your head in a fight, see the Bergin vs McNeill fight on youtube. Bergy KO's him and he goes down like a bag of spuds, bangs his helmetless head very hard.

Makes you think twice about not fastening your chin strap properly thats for sure, i ushally dont bother in the warm up but on reflection i think i will be from now on. Hopefully some good will come of it and people will tighten their chin straps a little tighter from now on which is no bad thing.
The part of the article that i found interesting was:
"Within the OHA, players who get into a fight receive a game misconduct, while players who remove their own helmet during a fight are slapped with a gross misconduct"
I guess they dont have that in the EIHL then because you always see happen it in most of the premeditated fights, i know id rather punch a helmet on occasion rather than be injured by my head hitting the ice.
