The LHC goes live tomorrow! Some say it will signal the end of the world. I am actually quite excited about this, being a bit if a squint myself. How many more dimensions will we find? Will the Higgs Boson be found? Where does all the dark matter go? Is the 'Standard model' correct? Who killed JR? Thoughts...

Thoughts... the only one I keep getting is "Welcome to Black Mesa..."
If I hear it's someone called Gordon Freeman switching the thing on, I think I'll grab a crowbar and start running! (if none of this makes sense to you, it's all about a game called Half Life)
My particle physics days are a long way behind me now, but I think it's great that the media are getting people talking about CERN and what it can do. Maybe it'll inspire some students to look more closely at Physics as a study option.

Those who are screaming about the end of days are a little mental.

i tried physics at AS level last year and failed miserably, but things to do with the universe have always interested me. stephen hawking said on the news that we are completely safe as this kind of thing happen all the time apparently (hmph...what does he know ;D) i am excited at the prospect of fdinding new things, and this is probably the closest to the end of the world that we will ever experience so i am quite nervous at the same time! i do hope we find somehting useful and hopefully solve everything we have questioned to do with the universe, if this does work it could just be the best 5 billion dollars the world has ever spent. on the other hand it could go oh so wrong......

Those who are screaming about the end of days are a little mental. Agreed. What's the point in predicting stuff if you'll never get to say "I told you so"?

... will be a few weeks until the beams collide though That's a pity actually because if the world ended today we'd be league champs. Typical Panthers.

Welcome to Black Mesa!!! They are waiting for you gordon... in the test chamber!
Awesome, Im actually looking forward to the outcome of this.
As well as being looking for higgs boson its the largest cryogenic chamber as they have to cool the thing down to 1.9K.
Should be interesting. Dont really know what they will find. Hopefully create a mini black hole though!!!

The LHC goes live tomorrow! Is the 'Standard model' correct? They already have the updated model in Argos

Waking up and finding France had disappeared would be about the best outcome.

Well, the fun hasn't really started yet... The collider's a bit like the M25 - two lines of traffic going in opposite directions. OK, so the plan at CERN is to have traffic that actually moves but you get the idea! All they've done today is open one junction and see if they can get traffic all the way around. The 'End of the world' stuff will surface again when CERN opens the other lane, and add in the contraflow, switching the lanes into each other. Only at that third point will anything interesting happen, sometime in October I believe.

If it did end this morning, would Panthers have won the EIHL as they were at the top. I was going to buy a new TV, but thought I would wait to see what happened. I did not want to waste over £500 and not get the benefit of it. ;D

It's always nice to wake up and not be dead. lol nice outlook on life upshall! ;D Seconded! I got a great lesson in philosophy from a postman one day. I'd been working away from home staying in this same hotel four nights a week for I think about a year and looking none-too-chuffed when I left it that morning. Postie says "Smile! You woke up this morning, it's a good day!"

i tried physics at AS level last year and failed miserably.. Same! I only just managed to pass A2. I loved all the particle physics and quantum phenomena! Not so much the waves and mechanics. Hopefully the top guys over there can find something of interest. I can't really see the end of the world at the minute though!
