It's much better when Gary Moran intoduces each player as they skate out. Who announced the team then??? Wasn't it GM

Rod Stevens, ok, just think he may be past his sell by date, but will give him time.

Thouroughly enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd periods, the 1st was very frustrating, although considering the ZT I thought Boniface did a decent job tonight. Very promising offensively but the D needs some work, obviously injuries and Mike Rees' 12 minute penalty didn't help. Hopefully the coaching staff can sort this out. Playing 3 solid lines paid big dividends tonight, long may it continue. Evan Lindsay, lets give the bloke a break. He looked very nervous tonight, 2 goals he could do nothing about and the 3rd, made the save but the puck unluckily squirmed behind him for DeSantis to tap in. Judging him on a couple of games is a bit rich, seems he's been pre-judged by some. Finally kudos to Neil Black, I doubted we'd get a decent tribute to past players and achievements, this was conveyed to him at the end of last season, but with the banner at the stage end he has delivered big time so to speak.

I enjoyed the game tonight, thought simoes showed what he is about, clarkie looked sharp and Sean M was great, twisted wrister for the SH goal! Our weakest period of the game was when we lost Meyers and rees(although the Pen to rees was a disgrace as he gave a tiny 'shove' in the back and its classed as checking from behind ) Thought ZT was ok, Boniface set his stall out early and the players, well ours anyway, seemed to adjust as the game went on. Overall the team impressed me, hopefull Meyers will be ok (please please please not another popped shoulder) To answer somebody's question Stevens works extremely hard and was excellent on the PK. 3 out of 4 points is a good start for me! shig

Well well well, after me being annoyed somewhat after the first period really enjoyed the game thereafter....i think once the teams sussed out what was legal and what wasnt the game was fantastic, fast free flowing hockey...what the zero tolerance was meant for. Clarkie was ON FIRE tonight, his hat trick goal was a cracker, nice bit of skill then a rocket past greener, our pace was incredible at times tonight, yes we were slow and pretty poor in first period but we went up about 4 gears in 2nd, some cracking goals tonight and big Jan is my new name on shirt player The atmopshere.......i couldnt hear the music...i couldnt hear the players names being read out.....and the goal scorer thing was just embarrasing after a while, maybe if they read out full player name then did it again so 'panthers gola scored by number five david clarke....david( insert crowd chant 'clarke!!) Biggest gate for a Bison game i can remember (discounting kid for quid game) 4,000?

Certainly is a nice new banner over the stage. Well impressed....except its still missing a name & number. HUNT #13 It should be there! Anyway - good game, seems we have swapped our dodgy 2nd period to a dodgy 1st period but we came back on all six. Clarkey was awesome. This is the guy as he is! Not the guy we had last season playing through injury and never looking fully fit or even like he was enjoying it. Boy did he enjoy it today. McAslan looked very sharp, quick reactions and a fierce shot (who needs Dan Tossier). 3 good lines left the Bison a little bit lacking in the middle bit. I also recall on a pre-season thread some folk saying we should look to sign a decent Brit as a tenth forward. I think we did, wasn't he wearing a #12 on his jersey. He didn't look out of place, granted it was Basingstoke, Might be different against Belfast or Cov. Can't wait for him to prove me wrong though. D was definitely missing on occasions. They must get tighter as I too have serious doubts about Evan Lindsay. He let one (maybe 2) through him today that you would expect an Elite standard nettie to stop (One at Bracknell as well - dunno about last night - wasn't there). Another to prove me wrong,I hope. All in all, a good game, a great win, 3pts from the weekend and I can't wait for next Saturday.

Hated the goal announments didn't read a programme till the way home so didn't have a clue what was going on! ;D
Also great idea by midland filtration (I think) on 2 MoM awards they both really deserved it and it would have been a shame not to have awarded both of them.

Well it looks like Evan was nervous and didn't show his best this game and I'm actually not to surprised . It must have been nervewracking for him as he has been given a very cool (in some posts hostile) welcome by the Panther fans and likely was tense, tried a little to hard and was unable to relax and play his game. There seem to be a number of fans on the forums who have decided they don't want him and just seemed to be waiting and wanting a chance to pile on and anything would do. I've seen him play enough games to know that he does not normally give out rebounds and one of his stengths is one on one so this was not his usual game. Give the guy some breathing room, a little support (some defense wouldn't hurt either) and he'll get the job done.

Even when we were behind I wasnt worried at all. We still worked hard and I had full confidence we would pull it back because it was like watching a proper panthers display with hard work, checks and togetherness!
As for the D, we wernt that bad but when you lose the only real stay home D man for 12mins and your 4th dman to injury you are going to struggle.
Big thumbs up for Mike Ellis who still rolled his brits even at 3-1 down when it would have been easier to move to 2 full lines with Blaz on D. It paid off!

Well - my first 'real' game of the season.... what a way to start! That first period looked like one hell of a learning experience all round - both teams suffering from ZT, our D thinking they were forwards and leaving Lindsay hanging out to dry, etc. Fortunately, the lessons were gradually learned - by the second, our D weren't leaving too many gaps (still a few) and they were learning on the ZT. I think the 3rd period's lack of penalties was half due to Boniface putting his whistle away and half because the teams HAD learned not to take as many dumb penalties. This could work, you know... I had that old, familiar sinking feeling at 1-3 down, but what a fight-back... and more! No more being a low-scoring team for us - our offence looked simply rampant last night. They said ZT should open things up for speed and skill, and that seems to have been confirmed. Plus, after the initial apparent 'non-contact' calls by Boniface, things started to settle down and we started to get some nice big (and legal) hits. That's the hockey I want to see - fast, hard-hitting, high-scoring. Bison look one hell of a lot stronger than last year, as well. They certainly had the speed, size and attitude to take advantage of every opening we gave them (and they were given quite a few in the first period!). Basingstoke are NOT going to be pushovers this year, not for anyone... regardless of what the 9-4 scoreline might suggest. Stars of the show for me:- - David Clarke. Forget last year, with injuries and Blaisdell - the REAL David Clarke is back! ;D Fast, fired up, shooting from all angles... this is the way to go! Confirmation that Clarkie is one of the handful of British players who is a match for any import that we see in this league. - Sean MacAslan. What can I say? A lethal winger... he's got speed, skill - the whole package. - Steve Simoes. He gets my 'Most Entertaining Player' award for last night... never stops, always battling - seems intent on going THROUGH every opposing player on the ice! (legally, as well) - not just the monster checks, but also they seemed to be unable to pin him along the boards... fighting his way through every time. Could well be a fan favourite here... - Jan Krajicek. Big, fast, killer shot. Ventured a bit too far forward a few times, but as an offensive D-man there have been few better. - James Neil. There were a couple of Bison imports that he made look a bit foolish. All credit to Mike Ellis for trusting him with regular shifts once Blaz had dropped back to cover for Danny Meyers, and all credit to James for doing the job well! More please... And half a gold star to...... Nigel Boniface. Yes, seriously! I don't like Boniface - I don't like his prima-donna, talk-to-the-hand style or his apparent love for the spotlight. And I'm still wondering where some of those calls came from. BUT - he called it pretty evenly, he called it by the ZT rules, and it started to work... Off the ice, I liked the big banner (much better than those 'bin bag' things we had before), the sound system was all wrong (couldn't hear half the music etc), and I think that goal announcements thing (first name by the announcer, second name by the fans) might have worked if we'd actually been warned in advance - not everyone buys a programme, and I only got to start reading mine by the end of the second break! Communication... it's the way to go. One thing that really DID honk me off... I got to my season-ticket seat with about 5 minutes to go, only to find it already occupied - by a lass who also had a season ticket for it! Not her fault, of course - but there was no way that I was going to give that seat up, I've had that seat since the NIC opened! Fortunately it's all sorted out, she & her hubby are moving along a seat - but it's a bit of an 'Oops!' from the Panthers office, and I'm not the only one... a couple 1 row in front of me had the same problem, and so did a mate of mine. How many more are there? Not good... However - no blood no foul, and a 9-4 win is a damned good way to start off the home season for us. A 3-point weekend? - I'll take that with a big smile! Good attendance, too - looked well over 4000.... 4500, perhaps? (and that's with the away blocks being somewhat sparsely filled).

Agree almost word for word Shaggy. Saved me about 10 minutes' typing.....I also noticed a very healthy Sunday night attendance. Let's hope that keeps up.
Announcements for goals puzzled me immensely. I don't like it, but I don't rule the world yet.
An encouraging start. And you'd take a point in Belfast all year.

well well.... now ive managed to wade through the hang over from belfast, i have realised what a great start to the season that was.
Were certainly not a 1st period team! But so long as we pick it all back up in the 2nd and 3rd then i cant complain. Though the style of hockey was exceptionally entertaining. Although its stop start at the moment, fingers crossed it will slot into place. I still have a slight concern that the refs over here wont be able the handle ZT efficiantly, but im hoping i will be proved wrong.
Clarkey... back to his normal self... and what a way to start with a hat-trick. All in all i think our team is fantastic, alot of individual skill, all of a different nature, but a team spirit second to non. Meyers, before he went off looked outstanding, so much grit and determination, one to watch me thinks. McAslan is brill, silky smooth. Rod Stevens is lightning, and has cracking stick handling, still cant understand why all the belfast fans boo'ed him saturday. All in all im loving the team ethic and the way they work, not really a problem with any of them so far. Will admit, Evan worries me, 3 matches ive watched him play now, and all of them ive come out scratching my head. Before i get jumped on, i will give him time, and hopefully he will turn out to be amazing, however in the last 3 matches he has worried me slightly. His glove seems very very week, in belfast a couple of shots cliped the side of his glove instead of him catching it. He seems to wander too, only ever seen 2 netties that could pull off the wandering around the net thing and that was robbins and gage! Evan also seems to let off a lot of rebounds, however, i will give him his dues, the close range play he is good at and seems to cover the crease well. Like i said i will give him time and hope he improves.
Music - its not me doing the announcing before i get the blame! lol. Dunno who the new guy is. intro i thought was alright, clappy and not bad at getting the crowd going. never going to please everyone though are they. The announcing the players surnames was my suggestion to GM. However, my suggestion was to do it as the players came onto the ice. I thought that sometimes the intro goes on for that long clapping gets borring and the atmosphere dies towards the end of the intro, so i thought that fan involvement in shouting out the players names would boost the noise. Do it one by one as the step on to the ice with the music much quieter. Oh well. Also did anyone notice that there was no horseman music tonight!!!!!
To conclude, im very happy, good start to the season, good team with an amazing bond already, good to see everyone again and good to be proud to be black and gold. C'mon panthers.

Shaggy, agreed, no point trying to do something so radical if all you are going to do is inform people in small print at the bottom of a page in the programme its not going to work. But if some effort is put into it then it will!
Forgot to mention James Neil... he is an awsome kid and works his knackers off. He has his own chant now as well... to the tune of inspector gadget! Brilliant player and sill not in his prime, another clarkey i think. Nice to see ellis giving him so much ice time, i know he didnt have much of an option, but last season MB would have just double shifted more players.
And also agree with shaggy on boniface... good game and aplied the rules well.

But if some effort is put into it then it will! . Yep. On a similar topic I was a tad annoyed when I got home and read in the program about keeping your 50/50 tickets for the season as they will be used again for some extra draws. Too late mine had gone when I didn't win as usual. I know many others were the same as I saw the usual ripped up tickets being thrown into the air when we won. On a similar note, the OakTree meal and goody bag prize for a sticker in the program which is apparently handed out in the first break. Did anyone manage to claim it? Many of us don't read the program until we are on the way/get home, let alone before the first period break. They're all good ideas and I'm sure the fans will be pleased with them but they've got to know about them first. Telling people in the first game program is NOT communicating to them something you want them to do in that first game.

The zero tolerance was ok at the end when the players/refs got a grip on what's ok and what's not. Well well well, after me being annoyed somewhat after the first period really enjoyed the game thereafter....i think once the teams sussed out what was legal and what wasnt the game was fantastic, fast free flowing hockey...what the zero tolerance was meant for. I'd argue that the fact that the game improved in terms of more free flowing hockey had little to do with the teams adapting to it. Offences that were called throughout the 1st were still being committed but Boniface simply stopped calling them. There were only 2 PIMs in the 3rd (i think) and its clear we all enjoyed this period more that the 1st, however in the interests of consistency I see no reason why it couldnt have been a repeat of the first 2 periods. All I can say is thank goodness Boniface decided to calm down a bit, ZT ruined the 1st period for me but thankfully not the whole match.

The only time Bison really stretched us was when our defence went walkabout and welcomed them into our zone. Fair play to them, they capitalsed well but can see them causing few problems against a decent D. Their main problem though was at the back. They simply weren't able to keep up with the movement of our forwards and certainly struggled. I also do not expect great things from their nettie(s) based on last nights performances. Potentially tough times ahead for the Bison? We shall see...
