Acording to Simms , Joel Irving is due to sign for a club not too far away from sheffield , Irving iced for the steelers afew years ago averaging a point a game . not too good at links but read all about it in thew star on the Steelers forum .
Is it simmsy winding us up
It could be Manchester / hull or Panthers
like Richards He also palyed for youngstown steelhounds last year so there may be some truth in it , a 6 ft 4 inch winger
and for facebook lookers he is freinds withTtom askey and Lance Galbraith

Wonder how much spin is going on here with Shuff. Shuff have tried to sign quite a few players who have said No, and it appears some of last years squad who have said No. Now, all of a sudden, with Panthers making these signings, Corey is talking to 2 netties, both of which want to pull on a Panthers jersey, it appears Shuff are now turning down players. Coincidence Are Shuff trying to appease their own fans by making it appear that they are playing hard-ball HL

My guess is that we will announce Talbot re-signing this week, which implies that we may have turned down Joel, as we would then have completed signing wingers. It looks like we will need a centre to replace Tess, and Joel, as good a player as he is, is not a centre. Alledgedly we have signing news this week. My guess is Talbot (and/or Sarich). I would be suprised if he signed for you, as I think he would probably be wanting a decent wage and cant see him coming to play 3rd line hockey - as Im guessing that Galbraith and Clarke will be your 1st line wingers with Bergin and Cook as 2nd liners. But who knows

Why shoudl it matter if you are on the first, second or third line. If the players are good enough on it, they will get the ice time.

But who knows tbh i can't see anyone on our roster this year that would be any where near the top earners of last year yet, like molin, wally mcaslan etc (with the exception of clarke) so i wouldnt be surprised if we have a fair bit more money left in the kitty yet. I think corey wants three equal lines, there will be no first or second line and dont think any of the top four teams really have a first or second line as they are usually very even

I would say his likely destination would be Hull or Manchester.
More likely Hull.
Don't get me wrong, he's still a good player, but I certainly don't see him as a player Panthers would add to their roster.
He's had a good career but his best seasons are behind him.

"JOEL IRVING is poised to sign for one of Steelers' Elite League rivals, after the Sheffield club turned down the chance to give him a contract" Here's my guess for a translation:- Joel Irving's agent sent his CV out to Sheffield - which arrived along with about 50 other CVs - but they didn't want him, so "turned down the chance to give him a contract" Thing is, the agent also sent his CV to the other 9 EIHL clubs (who probably also received the other 50) so he's "poised to sign" for one of them... Talk about your total non-story...

'Joel emailed us to see if we were interested and I spoke with Dave and Mike O'Connor about him coming back.
"But while Joel is undoubtedly skilled, Dave made the point that he is looking for someone a bit grittier.'
Seems that the management picking his players rather than the coach has moved up north.

Well this Phoenix fan wouldn't complain about signing Joel Irving.
"Old and past it" or not, anybody who could possibly be on a line with Tony Hand will get bucketloads of points.
My personal guess would be either us or Newcastle, but we shall have to wait and see...

Are the facts that we are still looking for a big winger, and also that Irving played on the same team - Youngstown Steelhounds - as Chris Richards last year purely coincidental?

Not to mention the fact that according to THIS Youngstown won't be playing in the CHL next season.

The article is quoting Simms, so I assume the Dave who wants a grittier player is Matsos.

Well we've got enough grittiness i believe in our team which is maybe why steelers passed this player up as he may be big but yeah, steelers have no toughness whatsoever this season and if they arent careful even the likes of hull and the caps are going to be able to push them around with their goons they'll be bringing in.
But we need a decent sized winger so ya never know..

More size, id be happy with Irving as a power winger to compliment one of the smaller signings. Can drop the gloves and doesnt get pushed around. Wudnt call him a fighter but wudnt need protecting so adds to the team toughness.
I agree though, I think theres still money left and it should not be spent on him really.

And Simms eats his words? Hearing the news that the Vipers had secured the signing of one of their former double winning players, Sheffield Steelers PR manager David Simms said: “ Joel is a fantastic signing for the Vipers and a player I would have liked to have seen back at Sheffield this season. Joel was one of the main reasons we won the double back in 2004 and is a great person off the ice but and exceptional player on it.” sourceSo Steelers 'turned down the chance to offer him a contract' then?
