For me, the goals have to be:
1) Owen v Argentina 1998 - At just 18 years old, scorer of one of the best goals ever in the world cup 2) Maradona v England - 1986 His second goal. Fantastic balance to beat half the England team. For me, the best player in the world. 3) Baggio v Czechoslovakia - 1990. Similar to the above goal.
Matches:
1) England v Argentina 1998. 1-0 down, 2-1 up, then Beckham gets sent off. 2-2 eventually we lose on Penalties. 2) England v West Germany - 1990. 1-0 down, 1-1. Hit the post twice in extra time, then lose on penalties. (familiar theme) 3) Holland v Argentina - 1998 decided by a great Bergkamp goal.

Can't disagree too much with the remainder of your post.

Italia 90 is my most memorable world cup. I spent the duration of it in Germany staying with my school exchange partner. Remember riding through the streets on a bike carrying an English flag after we'd beaten Belgium. The night of the semi final against Germany I was on my way home on the coach. I was listening to the BBC world service commentary as we drove through Belgium and a few German passengers asked me to tell them what was happening. So I had to translate the commentary on all that drama and the disastrous penalty shootout for them. In fact, they didn't need the words, they could tell from my reaction what was happening.
The defeat by Argentina in 98 was probably the biggest rollercoaster ride. Never seen so much road rage on display as the following morning when driving to work either.
And the early starts in the last world cup - being let into our long-time local in Hucknall (I travelled up from Birmingham for England games to watch with family and friends in Nottingham) by the back door at 7.30 am for the Brazil game and ordering a cup of tea!
Going to miss England's first game this time around because I will be at a wedding. Radio in the pocket time I think.

For me, it has to be THAT penalty against Argentina in 2002. I was at work in Solihull at the time, and my boss had sent me to the post office to buy a TV licence for the store so we could have it shown on the shop floor! I stood for the whole game and watched, along with all the shoppers that came in. The hairs on the back of my neck still stand on end when i see beckham score!
Other would be from the qualifiers for that year and Beckham (again) with the last minute free kick against Greece. What an ending that was!

Italia 90 was too my favourite world cup , mainly cause i thought we had a geniun chance of winning it, not a team full of superstars but a team who really united together but for those dam penalties on that night in turin. I vivdly remember a bit of the action from Mexico 86 too, hey and isn t it fittingi ll be in Mexico exactly 20 years later for this tournement ;D so ones i ve picked out are. 86 quater final Marodona (both goals) 90 Platts last minute against Belguim Holland v Germany at THAT joint sending off Baggio ( still remains as my fav player outside england) v Czechs The semi against the germans The final possibly the dirtiest i ve ever seen 94 Nothing much sticks out although was funny when the irish beat italy But sad when Roberto missed that peno in the final 98 Owens goal against the Argentines ;D

The first world cup i watched was USA 94 and from that i only seem to remember Ray Houghtens (sp) goal v Italy when Ireland won 1-0, Maradonas drug face when he scored a goal and the worst final ever where Baggio skied his penalty. 1998 i remember the Andertons screamer against Columbia, England fans going on rampage in Marseille and of course England-Argentina which was one of the most enthralling games ever for mainly bad reasons, oh yeh and everyone supporting Croatia when they were going all the way....well nearly . 2002, early mornings, earlier mornings, 1-0 over Argentina, easy win over Denmark, Ronny's i never meant it goal .......Korea getting to the semi's, they're amazing fans, Germany somehow getting to the final?. England fans conga around the stadiums ;D

France 1998-I was half watching the England Colombia match, and half playing Gran Turismo, and I walked into the living room where we had the game on the tv. Beckham lined the ball up for a free kick, and I said " He wont score..." and he did! ;D Watching the Argentina game with a group of mates in the Inn for a Penney in Carlton, balancing (very drunkenly) on a stool cos' I couldn't see properly and then the whole pub falling silent when Batty missed his spot kick

Aye, Sheringham was very canny there and set that up a treat. Didn't try breaking into the box as referees can be reluctant to award penalties at the death - but played for the free kick just outside the box and got it, dead centre. Thank you referee and all yours David.

Did you know that was the last free kick Beckham scored for England? What the free kick against Greece? Yup, over 4 years ago now. God knows why he's still taking them. Let him cross the ball by all means, but give the shooting free kicks to somebody else.
