I have been very lucky to have been lent a few photos by Helen the 50/50 seller and this is one of them. This is my first go at Imageshack and I seem to have got the sizing a bit round my neck, but looking at it I decided to leave it as it is so you can see the detail. To the left, the incomparable Ken Taggart before he became a ref. Just beyond him Dwayne Keward. No. 6 is Bob Batham. And in goal my first hockey hero, Dave Randall. Rotund and, you will note, no helmet, just a bit of fibre glass on his face. In the foreground the old boards with their 28 coats of paint. In the background a sparse crowd with no protection down the side boards and a bit of flimsy looking netting behind the goal. This photo was taken on 4 October 1980. This was only the second game of the newly reincarnated Panthers and the days of the full houses were still a few weeks away. The opponents are Avon Arrows. It's difficult to believe this scene is almost 30 years old. It's also difficult for me to believe I was at this game, on the back row of the block opposite the photographer. I know this should be in Amnesia Lane, but it would probably get overlooked there, so I thought I'd stick it here first. Perhaps Mods could move it in a few days. Thanks.

unfortunately I never saw a game in the old building but nice to see. Seems without H&S of today spectating was nearly as dangerous as playing! but then I never saw "old time hockey" either ;D

Nice to see the picture of the old LPS. Thanks Stef.
Anyone got a picture of the 1955 era. That was when I went to my first game?
That was also when the Public Ice Skating sessions also included Ice Dancing and Speed Skating intermissions, along with the Organ playing. Not to forget the sweet shop of course!

Wonder how many more points we'd have if we'd played this season in the Ice Stadium.
Quite a few I'd wager.
Still sorely missed.

The 1950's came under a different Franchise/Owner! Does the current Franchise/owner have the right to veto pictures from that far back? I would have thought not! It will be interesting to find out!

Thanks Stef for taking us back in time. That place was awesome for atmosphere, and intimidating as hell for the opposition.
I can still remember 'that smell' that hit you as you walked from the foyer into the corridors, that smell of cold dampness ;D To me that is a hockey smell.
It's a shame we couldn't recreate some of the best LPS features into the NIC.

Thats the big question, we'd all love to know.Perhaps nobody does until it comes to court... I would like to think your right. But I'd also like to think that anything before Elite's clamp down can be used.ie) me using photographers OWN work till NB bought the club at least. When I see pics of Coventry winning the league I get soooo confused about Elites enforcement. I shall see if I can find a good pic, if time allows.

It'd be fine to show pictures, different league/owners/rink etc.

If anyone is interested, Jeff Smith has loaded up some more photos from 1980/81 on his tribute to Andy photobucket page: s89.photobucket.com/albums/k222/jeff_jane/andy/ . These include colour pictures of the first incarnation of a gold/yellow/banana/call-it-what-you-will shirt taken during a match at Whitley Bay, which I think looks ok with the old (and still best) logo. For those of you bored now we have no hockey, have a look at the last two black-and-white photos. Each features a player from that first season enjoying post-match festivities with fans, prominent amongst whom is Andy (no carbing up or any of that stuff after games in those days. Just straight to the bar). Anyway, all of you historians out there: name those players.
