Why can't the sport get government funding for the national team? . That will have every sport holding their hands out. Lets ban imports and have a BRITISH league using BRITISH players, and see how many bums are on those seats then.

I believe though that the official line on why there is no funding forthcoming from the government and/or sport england/scotland is that our sporting structure is a complete mess and has absolutely nothing to so with the mix of Brits and dual nationals in Team GB. Bottom line seems to be that if we can sort out the league strucutres and run the sport sensibly then we have a chance of money for Team GB. So that will be never then based on some of the attitidues I have seen from both fans of BNL and EIHL teams showing their contempt for the "other side". Personally the Team GB bit doesn't bother me as my national team is already well funded and the leagues appear to be run in a much better manner than here in the UK.

So why has Messers Black and Moran been able to tap this in Nottingham. On the business side of things we are the most succesful team in British Ice Hockey, coupled with Gary Moran who i believe is the best GM this sport in this country has ever had. Surley these guys, if only for selfish reasons have tried everything there is to make Hockey a success in Nottingham, and by sucess i mean packed houses. By being prudent and tightening the belt? Remember what it was like in the 2000-01 season? We'd just moved into our shiny new arena...... and who was the most hated man in Nottingham ice hockey by the end of the season? - Neil Black. The sheer amount of vitriol being directed at him from all corners (and I think most of us were at least a little bit guilty of such at one point or another) was immense. Why? - because he wasn't chucking loads of money at getting more and better players. Well - it's paid off, hasn't it? Now he looks like one of the most prudent types around...... Add to that, as you say, Gary Moran as GM. Now I often disagree with what he says and the way he says it..... but you can't argue with the sponsorship deals and other stuff he's managed to get in place. Like him or loathe him (and many oscillate between the two, probably! ;D ) one thing you can say about him - he gets the job done. Of course, the Panthers' history and fanbase have had a lot to do with it. My first season was the last season in the old rink.... and boy oh boy, was getting tickets for some games a bind! I'd be on the phone for ages as soon as they went on sale! Panthers tickets used to be like rocking-horse poo poo...... so when the new, much larger capacity arena came along - instant boom-time for attendances and gate receipts! Put all of those together.... and that'll be at least part of the answer. Luck, skill, common sense - and us fans, of course! ;D.

I often don't agree with you Shaggy, but on this one i think you've got it completly right.
I have no idea about Attendances of BNL teams (although i know there lower), is there anyone who knwos the average attendances of the teams?

The same sort of figures for the elite league would be nice...... although the panthers is never correct, because there is a pattern to it

Didn't I read somewhere that either hockey was the fastest growing sport in the UK, or that the EIHL was the fastest growing league in Europe? I'm sure there's still a hell of a lot of potential in this sport. It beats 90% of the stuff they show on British Eurosport!

to be honest, i dont think the eihl can accomodate all the bnl teams at the moment, aswell as manchester an if they come back, the knights. that would mean something along the lines of a 14 team league. there needs to be a 'lower' league, there cant be the epl and then a huge jump to the eihl. maybe a promotion/relegation league is the answer but a a 14 team league will, i doubt work. the league needs panthers/steelers/giants,blaze to be playing each other at least 3 at home/away, purely to attract big crowds and gate receits.

I'll ask the question would you PPV for a hockey game? Depends what type of PPV it is really. If it's the Premiership Plus style of £10pg then i wouldnt simply on moral grounds, it's a ridiculous price to charge for Basingstoke vs London. On the other hand, i would happily fork out £25 per month for an NASN style channel that broadcasts regular EIHL games.
