im new to this skating lark, and im in line skating and soon will be ice skating as well, one thing i have noticed a lot of inline skates no longer have brakes, is it best to get a pair with brakes for hockey or without, and how do you stop without?

NO!!
I find it just as easy to stop in rollers then it is on ices skates (with abit of practice).
Just the same technique really but on rollers you stop alot faster then you would on a pair of ice skates (hope that makes sense)

its impossible to get any sort of decent dexterity with brakes on in lines. I always found a quick jump, turning you feet 90 degrees and angling them like you would ice skates is enough.

close your eyes turn and lean down and hope you stop.
wouldnt advise buying inline with a break but it depends what you want to do

is it like skiing where you put pressure on the left foot to turn right and vice versa or does the pressure go on the right foot to go right etc?

Yeah that's a sure fire way of stopping but not recommended when travelling at speed! ;D

You need decent wheels aswell, but just a sharp turn ussually with 1 foot i don't think i have seen anybody stopping with 2 like on ice
