Can anybody tell me how important HDTV is when buying a new plasma/lcd tv at the moment? I currently have NTL cable. I assume that whilst NTL are not offering it, there is no point having it. The price difference seems to be about £300-400 to have one that is HDTV ready. Also Plasma of LCD is there much difference?

Id sack it off personally....
When HD tv really kick in youll probably want a new TV anyway.... maybe worth it if you really are a big TV fan and want proper decent quality on DVDs etc.... you could invest in one....
For now though nothing will broadcast that way for a while.... Sky+ may start offering odd channels for an extra subscription....
BBC couldnt do it without an extra subscription becasue they arent allowed to make any profit....
Some next gen game consols will make use of it... but again if you arent a big gamer.... I imagine DVDs will have an option to buy a HD version and a normal version but nothing mainstream for a good few years yet....
LCD is better than plasma if you ask me... longer life, better picture.... with NTL you might need to fiddle around with the connections as we did to get a decent picture... also it may flicker for a short time but once the screenis 'worn in' that will stop and you get a brilliant picture....
However I did look at HD tvs i nthe sony centre and they were OH so nice.... crystal picture...

It depends on the size of screen you are going for what you are going to use it for, i.e. XBOX 360 As already mentioned HDTV can be used with the XBOX 360 and there is a different if you use component cables to connect everything up. Sky have been rumoured for months to be lunching a new HDTV service but the prices mentioned seem very high. Basic you will need a new box(£300-£400 with a rumoured 250 gig hard drive) to replace the existing sky + box and obviously a HDTV compatible tv. I can personally recommend Panasonic TX32LXD1 LCD TV, you can really feel the pain when the sound is up and there's a juicy mid ice hit ;D

Philips 'pixel plus' range give a stunning quality as well... doubles you resolution pretty much.... VERY sharp... not quite HD TV though.
Dunno if they are available in LCD/Plasma though.... might be the old Cathode ray for that..... could be wrong...

HDTV is at the mo a waste of money. Very limited output for the next 10-15 years and it will cost big bucks! Also it makes me laugh when you go in to the shops and they show you a HD telly with a picture on it, the picture looks stunningly sharp yes?
It is in fact a normal DVD! with gold RGB and audio leads and a massive pro image editing suite running in auto under the floor to sharpen the output. The fact is HD rapid, progressive scanning DVD players are not available yet so the shops cheat! In fact HDTV will be much better!
Has anyone noticed how some games on NASN look a liitle fuzzy? This is because there is too much detail for your telly to display as most sports networks in the states transmit in HD digitaly already.
I have a Swisstec 42" plasma stand mounted watching hockey (or any sport) just aint the same on a small telly any more. Stunning! You will love it mate.
A word of warning though DO NOT throw your old telly!! A very few people just can not watch PDP's (Plasma Display Panels) Hedaches and nausea are not uncommon. You may also find some of your remote controls stop working.
Enjoy! ;D
