[glow=blue,2,300]Make Poverty History. Poverty happens around the world, mainly in africa and asia, were the people are alot poorere than were most of us live. The G8 Summit will be meeting on July 6th-8th 2005 to discuss and to try and put this all in the past. Just your ideas on the Live8 and Make Poverty History right now. Good Idea? Bad Idea? Are you going to support The Poor? Just wondered... [/glow]

On balance, I don't think I'm in favour of Bob Geldof's special "I've got a new book to promote and I want to boost my CD sales" concert.
I'm all in favour of helping Africa as long as a suitable method can be found (I think tackling the corruption and trade barriers should be the highest priorities, not writing off the debts).
I'm not in favour of trumped up, self-righteous, "rock stars" who think they're more important than they are, and stand to make a lot of money on the back of a "charitable" event.

Worth noting, Bono is suing someone who auctioned of one of his hats. The person is poorer than Bono and Bono can afford the person to have a small windfall. But no. The rich guy is not letting the poor guy sponge of him.
Fair enough. Bono has earned his cash and why should people sponge of him? It is just a shame he doesn't feel the same about British taxpayers money.

It's impossible to do something like this without gaining, hopefulyl bands dont play thier new singles to try and sell them. Yet there are obvious problems, it seems to portray Africa as merely something to feel sorry for, not repect and understanding of its culture. It also won't make people understand the problems with the corruption in Africa, its rather a short term solution for problems which won't be so successful in the long run.

The ideas ok but i think the way of going about it is wrong People are going to Live8 for the music, nothing else and so the hole idea of Make Poverty History is good but Live8 will show no real support IMHO

hey Mr. Fairtrade here again, hey gobal leaders Come On Come on bring your cronies! Did any see that thing on the news in the week about a farmer who has had to go out of buisness and has become homeless becuase he can not compete as al his custom has gone for a cheaper farm in Africa(or somewhere like that) that can manage to undercut him due to the aid the foreign farmer gets from the UK and such places. What ever happened to charity begins at home?

What ever happened to charity begins at home? Begin at home. Not begin and end at home. There are plenty of Africans and other poor people who are dead because of the aid rich countries have given their farmers and businesses. Fair and free trade is needed. And that will mean lots of British jobs being lost to cheaper foreign labour. But ultimately we would all benefit and the 3rd world would be able to buy more of our products. It's quite simple really. Never gonna happen though because of the example of the British farmer. The west will always protect their own.

It`s a crying shame that a kid dies every three seconds in Africa and that their continent is in such a dire state.
However, why do they continue to have multiple amounts of children(a woman from Africa, in the News Of The World today, was saying that she was going to have to bury all of her SEVENTEEN children),when they know full well that there is little if no future for them with a massive risk of death before they reach their teens?
Surely there should be a huge push to emphasize birth control over there??

Africa is like a giant sponge, it will soak up any ammount of money thrown at it and still want more. Thats not to say the people of Africa shouldn't recieve help but there must be conditions and checks to make sure money and aid is used correctly and not wasted by corrupt governments. Just look at the current situation in Zimbabwe, Mugabe is persecuting his own people because they voted against him in a rigged presidential ballot, but not a word of condemnation from any of Zimbabwe's neighbours and a warning for the west not to get involved from South Africa, the most powerful country in the region. How much do you really think these despots care about the ordinary citizens of Africa? Why no condemnation of Africa's rulers by Bob Geldof and co?
