Can someone tell me what exactly is a top draw/top line Brit?
The term keeps appearing on the forum, but I'm at a loss as to know what the definition is?
Is it someone who has scored so many points per season, is it someone who has appeared for GB, is it someone who has appeared in the top flight for x number of seasons, is it someone commanding a certain salary?
When I see all the posts refering to top draw/top flight Brits and Ellis must get one signed before its too late, does Ellis have to sign one of these players for us to have any success?
Belfast had Levers and some of the Irish lads last season, yet finished 2nd in the laegue, and in the Playoff semi finals. Newcastle had 3 'top draw' Brits - Longstaff, Weaver, and Johnson - won nothing, Shuff had Phillips - won nothing, etc etc.
It seems to me that some clubs want to have a 'big name' Brit in their side, and some Brits can 'name their price' Im aware that the palyers salary isnt the be all and end all and players sign because they like the 'package' available, eg accomodation, car, job prospects for spouces, college courses etc., but it would not be unreasonable to suggest for the likes of Tait, Weaver, Johnson, the pay packet itself would be on a par (above?) many of the imports. This leaves only so much left in the coffers for import salaries.
I don't doubt for one moment that Weaver, Tait, and no doubt Johnson (Cov and Shuff presently in a bidding war for him) were touted to Panthers. perhaps Ellis has taken the decision to offer 'x' pounds and that was his limit, is deciding not to pay what he feels is 'over the odds' and is looking outside the Elite League for Brits who could easily perform just as well, perhaps on a more 'reasonable' salary. This frees salary up for imports, the quality of which, whether we like it or not, has always ultimatly detemined which teams have been succesful.
