Quality little player, another worryingly good signing for them. Why worryingly good? If there was any signing of theirs that has been "worryingly good", that would be Ash Tait, I'd have thought. Hey - they've lost Tessier, by far their best player last season... everything they are doing at the moment is only going to be playing catch-up on that situation. Finnerty is 'just' a returnee, so that's no further forward for them. They appear to be building a reasonable team so far (although it's too early to really know with any team)... but I wouldn't call it anything to be worried about.

I agree with Shaggy although that is not to imply I am unhappy - far from it; the point is the only 'new' players we have are Shep and Mash, the rest are the same players from a 4th place team last year. The better ones IMO, but we still need 'that' signing, like you own PC.
I also agree with whoever it was that 'was not suprised', Ryan was telling anyone who would listen that he had re-signed at the POWE, so the club have done well to delay the news this long!
Thursdays I believe will be a player new to us and maybe the country, A D man I am told. And an intersting quote from Matsos ref the Tait signing, "It will allow us to get an import on the third line to fulfill a certain role"
mmmmmm.

Sutter scored a few goals for them but everything went through Tessier. He ended up with 100 points with (I think) 76 assists. I am sure one of our friends from up the road will correct me if I am wrong.
A few others have said that Ricci was the best up there, with Philips and Finnerty getting mentions. Opinions you see!

Their best goalscorer, certainly (35 goals, 15 of which were on the PP). But whilst Tessier had fewer goals (still a respectable 23) he had an enormous 76 assists! Combine that with his face-off winning and ability to disrupt the opposition, and I'd have to name him as the Steelers' best player last season by a long chalk. And if the rumours are to be believed, Sutter may have priced himself out of the market and won't be returning... so they could well have lost their top goals man as well as top assists & face-offs man. That's not going to be easy for anyone to replace. (All of this doesn't mean that I think they're going to be naff next season... any team with the likes of Ash Tait and Jona Philips on it can't be written off - that's two top-level Brits around which to build a team. Some of their other re-signings weren't too shabby last season neither, even if they might not have been superstars).

Quality little player, another worryingly good signing for them. Why is it a worryingly good signing They won zip with him last season (with one of the best players ever to play ice hockey in this country [allegedly] - tessier) - why should next season be any different. HL

The sheffield hype machine would have us believe they were all best players last year (even Moran ;D). Makes it all the stranger how they ended up with NIL success. HL

Another good returnee that I'm pleased to have back in the ranks.
So far we have signed the best part of last years side (apart from Tessier obviously) and if we can improve of the liabilities (Maltby, Sarich, Johnson, Darby on D and Gustavson) then I expect us to build a better challenge.
So far we have replaced Maltby with Sheppard (an improvement no end!) it just depends who else comes along. Clearly replacing Tessier is going to be the major decision of the off-season.
Manzano was our 2nd best defenceman last year, IMO behind Ricci, and he was playing as 3rd/4th D. I'd much prefer a stay at home D-man than an 'NHL star' in Sarich, who forgets about his primary job!!

Still a long way to go, but for the first time in quite a few years I'm really starting to believe that we may have a genuine crack at the league title....The next few signings will be crucial.
On a like for like comparison with last season, to date:
Tait for Hill on the top line is a definate upgrade.
Phillips/Finnerty/Sheppard is certainly looking a better 2nd line than Phillips/Maltby/Gustavson.
The 3rd line and defence to date are currently the same.
As Shaggy rightly points out, Tessier was by far our best player last season and the quality of his replacement may well make or break our season. I'm not expecting an equal to Tess, but if we could get somewhere close then I'd be happy.
As for Sutter, I was never a big fan, hopefully he won't be back.
Still fairly early but so far so good as far as I'm concerned.
Last season right from the off I expected Coventry to win the league quite comfortably, next season I expect both our clubs to push them much harder.
Regards
Doom

Makes it all the stranger how they ended up with NIL success. HL We got what we "earned" last year. Poor results from an over reliance on one or two players to win us games. This year, up to now, and with a following wind appears to be a "team" building selection. You had it in spades last year and that is why you won a trophy. (At last).
