Confirmed on Steelers website that they have signed Doug Sheppard from Basingstoke.

Matsos certainly isnt hanging around, another good signing. I bet the Steelers fans are pleased they are no longer leaving it till the last minute. I hope Ellis does the same.

One hell of an improvement over Maltby for our second line centre!
A very under rated and unnoticed player last season.
Phillips/ Tait, Sheppard and Finnerty - a very respectable second line in this league.

Sheppard was top dog at Basingstoke and called the shots. Don't think that sheppard will be the focused player of last season. I suspect is in for picking up some nice easy money (aka Mr Tait) this season. Tait second line as well. I think Mr Tait will have a thing or 2 to say about that. 1st Line Tait(A) Sheppard ? 2nd Line ? Phillips ? 3rd Line Tait (W) Hewitt ?(Moran ;D) Whether Mr Sutter comes back (apparently wanting a few quid extra to turn out for you) or Mr Finnerty (was apparently the 2nd signing ) remains to be seen. Your problem is still defence I think. Mazano -okay, Ricci - not impressed last year, Thomas - okay 5th D man, Jody - your best signing HL

If A Tait played on the secound line then you would have phillips a top brit and the warren tait with him a good thrild line as well.

For one minute I thought you were going to see the "bright" side to our signings. It looks like being a quality league this year with the signings of all the teams so far.

Ah but Sheppard won't be top dog here, and isn't good enough for the top line. Maybe in Basingstoke he was one of their top scoring forwards, but if he was our first line centre I'd question a serious lack of ambition from our club and I can't see that myself. If he thinks he can fill Tessier's shoes he's only kidding himself. If Tait and Phillips are on the first and second line respectively, that leaves an import slot on the third. Oh, and if the signing of a 7 season AHL D-man we're after comes off, I'll be a very happy girl! Easy money? The same could be said of Drouin winding down his career with the easy pickings!

If sheppard is "only" good enough to be on your second/third line then i seriously doubt you are spending within the wage cap as he was one of the stars and hence high earners on the basinstoke team and i doubt also that he would leave to join the steelers because he likes slums and sheffield steel....

Being at Basingstoke who have a 25% better budget this year must not have been hitting the cap last season and as such any improvement on Sheppards deal will see him move away from Basingstoke is going to be good for him especially considering with him not being head coach it would prove impossible for him to go back to hampshire. Sheppard for me will be the bargain of the season and im gutted the Devils missed out on him!

how do you even know the devils went for him? As for budgets, with their lack of so called british stars at the time i guess that was where they were saving their money (not on the imports) and the increase in spending rise may well correspond to an increase in the value of said british players....

I believe it was mentioned on Radio Sheffield the other day that our 2nd line is likely to be:
Phillips/Finnerty/Sheppard
I think that's a big improvement on last seasons starting 2nd line of:
Phillips/Maltby/Gustavson.
According to The Star we're still looking for a 1st line centre to fill Dan Tessier's shoes. I'd like to think we could get a point/game player from the ECHL.
Regards

Henor, always good for a laugh, you talk about easy money on the day that PC signs for you, pot kettle and black spring to mind Hmmm, the Shuff spin comes to Nottingham. Sheppard - turn up and play (and if second line, turn up and only have to play a few shifts, as of course, the usual Shuff hype machine will have us believe they will have the best first line in UK hockey - like the one that won nowt last season ;D). PC Drouin - First line and Asisstant Coach. Pot and kettle - I think not somehow. HL
