This is a bit off the point but are the lions a professional team? In a word, no. None of the players, coaching staff, management staff or other off-ice helpers receive any kind of payment whatsoever..... in fact, the players have to pay for pretty much everything themselves - practice time, equipment, coach travel to away games etc. Everyone involved with the Lions, in any capacity, is an unpaid volunteer. (Correction.... Mike Urquhart is employed as Head Coach of the entire Nottingham Ice Hockey club - comprising the 8 junior teams, Vipers and Lions - but AFAIK is not paid specifically as Lions coach)

This is a bit off the point but are the lions a professional team? I wish we were! Some teams in our league could be classed as semi-pro, as they get all of their travel, training costs, insurance and registration etc paid for them, but us Lions pay for the whole lot. Costs me personally around £2000+ a year to play (thats with kit, training, travel and petrol driving back and forth from Solihull!!!)

Obviously you would like to be paid for you hockey though.... I assume? (Not you Carolle ) Or is being paid coming too close to it being a job? Sorry if it sounds like a daft question to some but for me personally.... If i was paid to... play computer games... Id get bored of computer games and theyd loses their sheen... if you get me

I personally chose not to play for the lions this season as I have work commitments and as im paying for it myself id rather pay to play rec hockey which I can pick up and put down whenever I want!

Sorry if it sounds like a daft question to some but for me personally.... If i was paid to... play computer games... Id get bored of computer games and theyd loses their sheen... if you get me I would love to get paid to play hockey, or if not paid, just all my training and equipment paid for me. But it all depends on the club you play for. The lions do not get as many supporters to home games than the likes of Billingham and Whitley bay, but this is because lions are the 2nd team at the NIC, not the main team (this means less revenue and no chance at all to pay the players). I have played for teams before at Solihull where i didnt get paid, but my kit was bought for me, and i loved it. Didnt lose any interest in playing at all. But for some people, it does make a difference. I had a short spell in pro football for Birmingham City academy, and i saw some of my mates start to get paid and then go off the rails. But then others stuck at it, and one of them has just been bought my West Brom for nearly £2m, and the other started at Left Back for the 1st team on Saturday. Depends on your personality i suppose

Slightly off-topic but this is about a former Lion, Lee Mercer, now at Haringey, who lost 4-2 to Streatham yesterday. It appears that he took offence to Steve Paris (I don't know if it was something he said or did, or whether he just took offence to Steve Paris) in the post-game handshake and a brawl ensued. Icing on the cake was apparently when Paris was fighting someone else and a fan (allegedly Paris' girlfriend) got involved. One awaits with baited breath the referee's report.
Elsewhere down south the Invicta Dynamos took another step towards retaining their league title by beating the Cardiff ENIHL Devils 4-1 in Gillingham.

Nottingham Lions are pleased to announce two new signings in their push for the English National League Playoffs.
Lions have signed Utility player Colm Cannon, and Netminder Alan Levers, both from Solihull Barons.
Levers, who played all his junior hockey in Nottingham alongside older brother Marc -who is now with Belfast Giants - rejoins the Lions after spells at Elite League Coventry Blaze as well as the Solihull Kings/Barons.
Colm Cannon, who is a student at University in Nottingham re-joins after playing for both the Lions and the Under-19 Leopards last season.
Both players will be making their Lions debut in the home game against Whitley Bay Warriors on 15th January 2006.

The Nottingham Lions are hosting the Whitley Warriors in the Olympic Rink this Sunday at 7:15pm, and it's looking like a real Wild West showdown..... welcome to The Good, The Bad And The Ugly! The GoodLong-time Nottingham favourite, Alan Levers, makes a welcome return to our ice in goal after leaving Solihull Barons in the EPIHL. He's played juniors here, he's played for the Lions, he's trained with the Panthers - Alan Levers IS Nottingham ice hockey, and it's nice to have him back. Colm Cannon also has come back to us from Solihull after his debut year with us last season. And he's well named.... as well as being useful at both ends of the ice, Colm literally has a cannon of a slapshot - you might see it, but with any luck the opposition netminder won't! The BadThe Lions' away game at Whitley earlier this season was a rather bad-termpered affair - culminating in an extremely nasty facial injury to the Lions' Mark Hallam from a slash. Whether the offending Whitley player will be on the ice this Sunday is as yet unknown..... but either way, this could be a bit of a rough one. And The Ugly?Come on - I said it was Whitley, didn't I? ;D There's no Panthers game, home or away, on Sunday - so if you want a hockey fix, please come down to the Olympic Rink and cheer on the Lions. After all.... Paul Moran, Geoff Woolhouse, James Cooke and Dan Scott have all worn the Lions jersey before the Panthers one..... you never know, maybe one of the lads you'll see on Sunday could be doing the same thing next season.

Good luck Lions at the weekend.
Shaggy any chance of hiring the man with the deep voice from thousands of film trailers to make an audio recording of what you've just typed?

Nice to see an enthusiastic response from Cageites who have been to Lions games before. I have noticed that it is difficult to get people down to a Lions game (for a variety of reasons - some genuinely can't, but there are a lot who are just not convinced that they would enjoy it) - but of those that do, an impressively large proportion have enjoyed what they saw and have done their best to return. So the 'product' is good..... just hard to sell. So - a bit of a plea to those who will be coming along....... grab a friend who hasn't been to a Lions game before, and drag him/her down to the Olympic Rink on Sunday. If everyone brings just one extra person down, it would help our attendance numbers immensely - and could well get several more people hooked! Come on - you know it makes sense!

Great game. Hard "fought" in more ways than one Final score 5 - 4 to the lions. Well done lads, you do like to keep everyone on the edge until the final buzzer this season.

Even closer when somebody lit the lamp by mistake with 3 seconds left. If anybody feels it necessary to have a poke at my expense, it would be neither big nor clever.
For precisely 0.021 seconds I was the only person in the building who thought it had gone in. Ever felt (like) a twot?
Sorry peeps. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.

That's all right, Baz...... it's not as if anyone's going to take the mickey out of you for this for the rest of the season (and beyond) is it? ;D Still - at least I now have your theme tune sorted out..... ..... The stripes have to be earned mate. You're not given them.
As an aside, I nearly fell off my stool tonight when someone in the crowd asked "Why's that bloke over there got a tea strainer?" So the chant is now "Goalie", "Tea strainer", "Goalie", "Tea strainer". I'd love to see the size of the mugs of tea round hers.
