Right, ladies and germs..... it's that time again! ;D
Seriously - anyone who can't make it up to Newcastle with the Panthers is welcome to come along with the Lions on their away trip to Billingham on Sunday. Should be a good trip.... an 'old time hockey' rink, Billingham are no pushovers so it should be a good game....
If anyone is interested, please PM me. There are a limited number of seats on the team coach (costing £7.50) and the coach leaves at approx 1pm on Sunday afternoon.... rough ETA for return is midnight-ish. Very 'ish'! ;D
Come along and have some fun.......

Bad news from Billingham I'm afraid. Lions 6-1 down at the end of the second. Bad night all round for Nottingham.

It was not a good night for the Lions - and spookily seems to have paralleled the Panthers' trip to Newcastle in some ways. The Lions were again reduced to 11 outskaters because the student players aren't here yet (should be for Sunday's home game against the Sheffield Spartans, though) and because the U19s were playing last night as well. Not only short-benched, but short-handed on the defence as well, having only 2 regular D-men..... and that was probably the most telling point. The first period was fairly even - it ended 1-0 to Billingham, a lot of missed chances for the Lions. The second period was the disaster. Lions equalised, but Billingham regained the lead very quickly and then went on to bang in four more to make it 6-1 to them at the second break. Nothing, and I mean absolutely NOTHING, went right for the Lions. Passes went astray, shots went wide or were fanned on, they were outskated and out-worked. Some of it was bad luck - a lot of it wasn't. The third period seemed to start off in a similar fashion to the second.... things still going wrong, the Lions getting a goal but Billingham netting twice to make it 8-2. Then something weird happened. All of a sudden, in the last few minutes, the Lions found the higher gears that they normally play at, and put 3 past the Billingham netminder in just 70 seconds! From 8-2 to 8-5 in almost no time at all. Weird. That was as much as could be done though, and 8-5 it finished. Not a good performance from the Lions, and they know it - after speaking to some of the lads after the game, I don't think they're going to let that happen again in a hurry! Billingham were undoubtedly the better team on the night, no question - which is especially gutting, because we know that the Lions are the better team when they apply themselves properly. They didn't, so they weren't. It was a bit of a farce with the officiating, as there was no referee - just two linesmen who couldn't seem to see the most blatant icing, offside or penalty half the time. Oddly, it was apparently Billingham who were complaining about this the most, despite them getting away with some blatant stickwork (and even a headlock-and-throw which would have done well in WWE!). If truth be told however, this wasn't what cost the Lions the game - that was down to them and only them. So - a disappointing road trip with an awful second period resulting in the first loss of the season. Sorry - was I talking about the Lions or the Panthers? Spooky..... I suspect a resurgence of effort from BOTH teams next weekend.

Hey Guys,
Last nights game was just one of those. Nothing seemed to go our way, the bounces, the chances or the refs decisions. Billingham have always been a hard hitting team who finish checks, however late they are. This was proved in the first 30 seconds when i was checked through the face after dumping the puck out of the zone. this lead to a badly split lip and cut nose, but nothing that put me out of the game. The first period was tight, with few chances been taken at either end. Billingham continued to produce some nasty, and at times dangerous checks, but nothing was been called.
The second period was our let down. a few quick goals set the pace and Billingham capitalized on this. The high checks and high sticks continued to go un-noticed, but as Mike said on the bench, if your moaning about things it shows that your not mentally tough!!!
The third period was a slight improvement, but our stepping up two or three gears came about 25 mins to late. a period of 5 mins at the end of the game showed how the lions CAN play, and hopefully this will carry on in to next week.
I personally don't wish to put in another performance like that all season, and i think this feeling was mirrored by the rest of the team in the changing rooms after. We will definatly be looking to bounce back and perform 110% better next week.
Finally, thanks to all the supporters who travelled to see the game, and also to those who were posting period scores on this thread back at home.

Not only short-benched, but short-handed on the defence as well, having only 2 regular D-men..... and that was probably the most telling point. We had 3 D-men last night and Craig dropped back to help making it 4. The ENIHL league is known for being rough hockey and I think that the EIHA should allow for 2 linesmen and a ref for these games. 2 man lines may be ok for the younger teams but there is too much going on in these games to only have a 2 man system. You could see it in the game last night, they just couldn`t cope with doing the refs duties and the linesmens duties..missing icing, offsides (far more than normal) and they seemed to think the other one would blow on alot of calls..goalie hit in the facemask, lots of off play incidents etc. Everyone knows how 3 men miss things,so you can imagine how much more 2 men miss and how this this can bring the game down and incidents get out of hand. For example when Luke got a check to the head from being hit off the puck after the play, blood on the ice, play was eventually stopped even though he was on the ice infront of the official but nothing called. The players know that they had a bad game, but it was made worse with the lack of officials capable of doing what they are paid to go.

Absolutely..... and since one of the linesmen was scraping the bloody part of the ice to the side, up against the boards, you'd have thought that he'd have noticed!

the linesman couldn't even count ( If they can skate AND count at the same time, they give them an orange armband to go with the stripey shirt don't they? ;D Only joking - without the efforts of the officials we wouldn't have any hockey to watch - just that when we've got our supporters tinted glasses on, those stripeys just don't see the games the way we do! ;D

I know we can`t play without them, but in situations when it`s only a 2 man system it can be dangerous for both sets of players.

Sounds like he didn't realise he should have taken the black protective plastic off the visor before he used it. ;D

I know we can`t play without them, but in situations when it`s only a 2 man system it can be dangerous for both sets of players. Yes, true enough. Have fond memories of a game run by just a solitary "referee" - a stout gentleman, resplendant in a brown pullover and trackie bottoms as I remeber it! ;D I know it was only rec hockey (a Northstars game) but he did splendidly. Presumably he steped into the breach as there were no officials to take the game. Didn't bother much about icing but was mustard on the offside calls - even when he was at the other end of the rink and looking the other way! Suspect there must have been plenty of experience behind the unconventional appearance as he ran a good game as far as I remember it.

Come one, come all..... for any Panthers fan who can't make it down to Coventry on Sunday, please come down to cheer on the Nottingham Lions as they host the newly-formed Sheffield Spartans for the first time. Hopefully we should have close to a full squad now, with the student players making their season debut (fingers crossed!) so it should be a good game. Location: NIC, Olympic Rink Time: 7:15pm (possible delay from junior game beforehand) Prices: Adults £5, students £4, kids £3. Come and say hello!

Nice one Lions! Am I right in thinking that's first blood to Nottingham in the new rivalry? Correct. Good effort from the spartans tho when you consider they are a totally new team compared to the lions history etc!

yeah, but Sheffield teams in all sports at all levels are supposed to be good . Still, a 3-2 defeat to the team who came second in the league and playoffs reflects well on them, and I'm sure this will develop into a keen rivalry given time .

Lions did have a few regular players missing and dressed some of the U 19 and U 16 players, who all played their part in the win.

Tickets are same as last season - adults £5, students with NUS card £4, U14s £3. Out of interest - how much are tickets for 14,15 & 16 year olds without NUS cards, but still in full time education?
