I thought that was an enjoyable game played at a fast pace. Second period we looked really good. Third less so, we were struggling to get out of our own zone for long time. Winning start though which is the Most important thing but they will most definitely improve.

Boring night for the penalty box officials too. Don't see a zero minuter very often.

Boring night for the penalty box officials too. Don't see a zero minuter very often. Fair play to the officials. Easily could've been 5 or 6 to both teams. They decided to put the whistles away and were consistant with it.

I will start by saying I aint making any real judgements after watching only my first game.
There are some positives but i'll save them to finish on. For large parts we were woeful and the players looked like they just met yesterday. Not had a 3 week training camp with FIVE games. A lot of the concerns I had about this roster were shown out there on the ive tonight(I am aware it's easy to see soemthing when you are looking for it). We do look like we lack size, regardless of what other teams have. That was probably exagerated at the back especially though with Caruso missing. We barely threw a check all night. This I believe comes down to signing to many similar forwards, and thats where i'm most concerned. It was the biggest problem of last years team. Not only does it mean we dont throw hits when we need to it also means we arnt strong enough on the boards which leads to those easy transitions for the opposition. It has a similar impact at the back end where we get penned in for large periods. All that leaves us to 1 dimentional. Not replacing Hunt with a similar type I still think will be a huge mistake unless rectified. I will make a firm prediction that if we dont make 1 or 2 additions or changes we will struggle to compete in many games with the top sides, thus not moving forward in our progression as we'd hoped.
The most dissapointing thing is that it's a million miles from what GG said it would be in that early interview. I wonder if he thinks he got what he wanted, if not, why not.
Individually(and again, it's 1 game. Not writing him off at all) I thought Lagrone was aweful. He looks like he could compete for worst Dman ever if Im honest.
Now 1 area I am positively suprised about is Dubeau. I wasn't convinced when signed he'd prove to be championship winning. Tonight he was exceptional. In fact if it wasn't for him we'd have struggled to stay in touch.
Hammond was as expected. Looked a step above the rest of the roster. What a signing that is. When it clicked we looked special in those few momments. Importantly they showed they can hang in there and nick a win when not deserved. As Pidge said, very Steelers like.
Ultimatly it's 2 points from 2. Plenty to work on, plenty of talent in the roster. They will improve. Onwards and upwards.

It has to be said that the club put on a great presentation of the late queen. Received well with the applause that rose near the end. You could hear a pin drop from the two minute silence afterwards and then hear people sing to the national anthem. Brilliant.

Got the 2 points, as long as we regularly do that whilst getting fully up to speed then that’s all that matters in these first few weeks of proper hockey.
How refreshing is it to see us pull the netminder and it ACTUALLY work? I believe it worked in one of the pre-season games too?
Great to see Hazeldine get regular minutes too, albeit he made a mistake which led to Dubeau pulling off a save but he won’t learn any other way so he’ll be better for the experience of tonight.
I imagine Caruso back will make the defence more solid but we seemed to lack urgency a heck of a lot when in our own zone defending which needs changing asap for me.
Also thought the Flames game plan worked a treat, they’ll do well this season I think.
Anyway, I’ll take the 2 points any day of the week.

People overreaction 1 game in really does baffle me. It may be a new era but some fans still seem determined to remain in doom mode

Great finish to the game for us. Guildford will be gutted, they were more than worthy of their point, they’ll have a good season I feel.
Start of the game we were flat and the majority of the third was the same. The 2nd period was good from us, if we can play like that consistently then victories will be a lot easier. A negative point, Ferrara had another poor game, made very little impact, hopefully he gets going in Cov tomorrow.
Ending on a positive, Dubeau was quality and kept us in that game, he was the motm in my eyes.

I think the fact that GG has stated he still wasn’t happy and Myers has come out and said the same shows there’s still things to work on for this team. We have to be real: this is a whole new team with a whole new set up. The core is 3 players (Hopkins was part time) and to expect them to be world beaters off the bat is unrealistic.
What we got was a character win. Would last seasons team found a way to win that? Guildford at times bossed it but really they had what 4-5 great chances? Debeau saved the 2 on 1 effort and the breakaway but wasn’t severely tested. Same for the Guildford netty. It was 2 teams playing an honest, solid game of hockey. At the end of it, we’ve come out with 2 points. Guildford aren’t some push over team and haven’t been for a long time. They play a great system that really suits the big ice. There was also the pressure of getting that first home win of the new era. And I think that weighed heavy on a few.
Great to see 4 different scorers as well. I think we looked shaky on D at times missing Caruso and the balance seemed off.
We can’t get away with those all season but there’s certainly no mass panic.
Let’s talk about culture again. Fox has come out after a loss and talked about “good things were there” we’ve come out after a win and said “we need to be better” I know which scenario I’d rather have

More times than not over the years Sheffield have been 2nd best and still skated off with the 2 points When it clicked pidge we did look very good. I'd argue we probably got our shots up in clusters. Guilford looked the better team for longer periods. There were a hell of a lot of passes to nobody and multiple players skating away from pucks with nobody quite sure whos job it is to go get it. That of course is just early season lack of chemistry, although I was suprised by it somewhat considering its been a solid camp. Once that chemistry builds and we increase the time where it's clicking the talent in this team will score a lot of goals at times.

On a side note regarding the match presentation. I thought the player intro images were very good and refreshing to have them ready for the first game. Ever since we got that new big screen I always thought it was rubbish as the picture quality was poor. It’s now clear to see that it was the quality of the image produced was always crap as it now looks so much more crisp and higher resolution and you really can tell with the new slow motion replays which are also a nice new addition. The announcers also sound much clearer now with the new sound system

The rink side camera shots fed onto the screen, replays of chances, great stuff. I know there wasn’t any penalties yesterday but I think it would be great to give replays of them as well in the future. One final point, I think that the intro video before the players come out is brilliant, captures the history of the club and some of our greatest moments, spine tingling.

Well looking at the stats.. don't really marry up to what is being said here.. panthers outshot Guildford 38-24 and also on Face offs 31-23 How many points do you get for winning faceoffs? Or outshooting opponents? Panthers had the most shots of any team in the EIHL last year, I didn't hear you saying what a good thing that was back then? Genuinely, I'm surprised at those stats, to be fair, it certainly didn't feel like a game that Panthers had any "right" to win. They dominated on no fronts at all - the post match podcast says as much - but 2 points is 2 points. Spik's right, Dixon should be dialling 999...

(usually by Sheffield) the aftermath is all about how panthers bottler it or threw it away eh P.s. you are absolutely right the only stat important is the final score of 4-3.. no other counts and the record books certainly don't mention how panthers played either !!

Thought Flames came with a good road trip plan, stuck to it and deserved something from the game. We lack a physicallity to lay the body, to intimidate. A training camp, 5 pre-season games (lost 4) to ready themselves for the campaign and they still looked like strangers.
I think we will get better, but it needs to be quick.

That will come, I'm sure, but the fact that it's not there already is a little concerning. You don't leave things for team-mates to do in any team sport without telling them...
