A modern thinking coach.. bring someone in who wants to make it to the big leagues someone young who can use it as a stepping stone similar to what Ben Simon did not the old recycled coaches like whistle Thomson etc!

Somebody who’s recently worked in the current hockey world, been around current decent quality players and who hasn’t done virtually nothing in hockey coaching for about eight years other than return to semi pro/amateur hockey and probably only took that because he got desperate. Somebody Panthers had to go and fight to get,not just somebody who easily fell into their lap because he couldn’t even hack it in a fifth rate semi pro league.

But then you'd still have to get the owner who will back him.

If we signed the Clan or Devils coach would you be pleased with that

Just read how the appointment of Whistle has allowed LEE to concentrate more on his rehab. Really?, not had enough time to aid his rehab otherwise? To start with he wasn't on the bench and I'm sure being on the bench etc recently has only helped him be a bigger part of the team.

Although this is classic Panthers path of least resistance, having Whistle as assistant and running the bench cannot be any worse than having Steve Lee doing it.
We're clearly just trying to get to the end of the season at this point, and then a proper coaching appointment I would assume.

After Lee’s balls up with a minute to go the other week we needed someone but Whistle won’t be assistant coach very long

They'll make a proper appointment in the summer, whether that ends up Matheson we'll see. Whistle is only the current version of Rick.

Back when Strachan was appointed the budget was bigger or at least black wanted to give the team a good chance of success now totally different.. they have a small budget so will penny pinch this way for their new bench coach 😉

From what I was told tonight Whistle is to be bench coach & "help out at training"
If that's true I can't help but think what's the point?
it's a strange one having a bench coach that is far more experienced than the current player coach even if he's perceived to be one who's passed his best.
As others have said its an easy & typical Panthers signing to make, especially with Whistle already in the country.
Whistle was let go at Leeds because it was felt his team was under performing. By all accounts their results have improved since he was replaced...
Nothing ventured nothing gained, time will tell if it works out for both parties.
One thing is for certain it makes no difference how good your coaches are if your players aren't good enough to get the job done...

Maybe if the club had backed the then coach in how he wanted the club run over a certain pub/sponsor like you would expect a professional sports to do things just may have had a greater chance of ending differently.

If he had been announced as a permanent head coach then I would agree it could be considered an easy and uninspiring move, but it’s not, if anything I think this is the right decision.
The thing is Matheson and Lee really need to be on the ice (that’s if Lee ever manages to get back out there), so we do need a voice on the bench to keep the players focused and to maintain order. Let Whistle fill this role until the end of the season and then re-evaluate.
