Cracking signing this! Looks a very good defensive defenceman. Obviously hope he's mobile but to play that many games in that league I doubt he was a pylon

I’m pleased with this signing, he’s got good experience and at 30 years old he’s coming to Nottingham at a good age. Plus, he’s an absolute unit, which is always nice to have, hopefully he brings physicality, intimidation and reliability at the back. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does.

He looks a pretty good signing. Hopefully a Jason Beckett rather than a Brent Henley !

Looks ok? Yet when a team signs a player who has barely seen ice in the AHL he's a very good player!... Gotta laugh sometimes

Didn't you play down old paper aeroplane signing for Cardiff for the same reasons (which I agreed with)? Can't have it both ways. He's an ECHL defenseman, his stats aren't suggesting a point machine like that guy yesterday, so there's not much other than hope that he plays to his height to go on, unless you've watched him play?

Different types of defenceman.. but you have failed to recognise Doherty in the same way you have register. Why was the later never considered good enough for the AHL taking into account all his personal accolades? Anyway.. another former AHLer incoming ...

Well you can look at Register's stats and see exactly what they should be getting, however much you discounted him because you didn't know which position he plays, you can't see that for Doherty. His stats look ok.
Again, unless you've seen him play?

His stats look ok. Again, unless you've seen him play? You expect a defensive defenceman to get 50 points in a season eh? His stats for the type of player he is is what I expected. He was considered good enough for the AHL only 3 years ago as a shut down d man, and he's a good age as well.

Why would I expect that? I'll try this again, didn't think you'd struggle quite so much:
Register - stats obviously show what you get for your money. You still wrote him off because you thought he was a forward (and he didn't sign for us). Doherty - a big unit whose stats, which are ok, don't really tell you that much, bar perhaps his PIMS.
I'm guessing you're assuming he's a shut down defenseman, because of his size and modest stats, and that until today you'd never heard of him?

His PIMS have been moderate as well.. not low but not high either except when he was in juniors ! Mind you I'm not surprised with you. You thought Herr looked 'ok' as well..

Firstly, since you've been sad enough to, yet again, bump the Sam Herr thread, even you can clearly see I said "he looks good, it's a good signing".
I know you'll be referring back to that for the rest of your time on earth, so I'm a bit disappointed you don't know the thread by heart by now. You must read it most days?
On topic, from the basic stats we have for him, Doherty's PIMS relative to his teammates on the same rosters, tend to be at the higher end, which coupled with his stature suggests he plays a more physical game.
Again, this is about making inferences from basic statistics of players we otherwise know nothing about. It is allowed to try and be more nuanced than Panthers good, everyone else bad.

Possibly should be in rumours, but with the way this thread is running and Jordv4's expectation of a winger, thoughts on this please. 'GM' spin tends to go for 'AHL' player to describe say 40-50 games spread over what would be really an East Coast career. Contrast this to a Herr or Hughes with much more AHL experience. How does this affect people's expectations?

Yotes and Pidge! Can't you swap WhatsApp details with each other and fight on there so we don't have to watch? Come on admin team this is getting silly now. We want news and hockey chat not this rubbish!

We want news and hockey chat not this rubbish! Yotes is part of the admin team and it’s a reasoned debate. So no Samantha, we’re happy to keep this here. Thanks for your contribution to the signing thread though. On to the signing - like most players, we can only infer what we can see from stats. And like data, you can use the same set of data and get different outcomes depending on how you use it. Ultimately comes down to how the overall team is built. Not unhappy but still a Unknown quantity until he ices.

He sure knew where the net was 😉

Thank for your thoughts. I suppose the underlying quality from the AHL can enable players to adapt well to a different role in the Elite League. It also depends what role Wallace has in mind for players.

Looks a really good signing, lots of AHL experience and also a little bit of time spent in Europe. Hopefully his size doesn't count against him with the refs over here!
