Are you serious Pidge... we scraped a win with 16 seconds to go against a backup netminder? OK whatever... Nice one. Somehow turn a win into a negative 🙄 Welcome to The Cage

Iggy couldn’t give a crap what they do Pidge, even against a back up goalie. But you would give a crap if Panthers had lost.. like they probably will tomorrow night 😉 all we have to do is not get embarrassed. wins and loses mean nothing in pre season but if we get embarrassed then it wont look good for our season. sounds like we did well today.

A good game tonight, I’ve come away from the rink feeling pretty optimistic.
Interesting that we stuck with the same forward lines for the majority of the game, as follows:
Golovkovs - Loiseau - Rheault Quist - Lachowicz - Bulmer Herr - Perlini - Jakobs Hazeldine - Betteridge - Kelsall
The Brit pack looked very good, full of energy, especially Hazeldine and Kelsall, Betteridge also played at centre which was interesting to see.
After seeing this first game, the thing I’m most excited about this season, and I suspect it may be our biggest strength, is our quality on the blue line. Deutsch, Matheson and Connelly are terrific on the puck, transition with speed and ease. JT looks to have put a bit more size on his frame, I thought he played well with Lepine, my only question mark with Gui’s performance was his fitness/stamina, but obviously that’s what these games are for. Fick I feel will be an unsung hero, seems to be a solid, no-nonsense player. Plus, we’ve still got DeSantis to come in and add some extra quality, bearing mind he sat out tonight.
Also, the fact that Murdy was in net tonight is irrelevant to the final score, he played well and I don’t think Bowns would have saved the ones he conceded, especially Deutsch’s bullet! That was the best power play goal I’ve seen us score for a long time!😂

Really pleased with Kelsall and Hazeldine they put themselves out there and looked effective when they were on the ice m team worked well together. Occasional wayward pass but to be expected really. Really pleased fast entertaining hockey with lots of effort from the lads. Hope it continues

Must admit, I don't seem as smitten as the most people. It was a good starting point, and I don't see any massive issues at this point.
Plenty of rustiness with our play but that was too be expected. 2nd period was pretty good, but still pretty cautious on the whole.

One thing stood out for me - your forechecking. Often there were 2 guys deep harrying our D with the 3rd also chipping in now and again and caused us to cough up the puck with alarming regularity and on one such occasion you took advantage and scored your first. You did have plenty of chances in the first 2 periods from this excellent forechecking.
Not sure why both our D were sleeping on the red line allowing Rheault to skate along the blue line and receive that pass but a great 5 hole finish.
And that one timer from Deutsch, wow.
Who on here was moaning about your size? Yowzer, you have half a dozen towers in your squad! Lol
You have speed, size, and some guys with very quick hands.
The league is getting even better.

Like anything in sport, we can’t get too high with the highs and low with the lows. Tonight will be a different game in their barn and our lads will likely be feeling their legs this morning. We’re a week behind their squad with practically 0 time to gel any players compared to their 4 plus years.
BUT it’s good to see some positive feedback from both sides of the squad. Wallace talked about the young Brits doing well in their own zone that earned them their ice time at the end: that’s how it should be. Regardless of who you are, you put in a good shift, you get your ice time. If what I’m hearing is correct and we limited Cardiff to 14 shots, then that’s a huge bonus too.

The reason for no shots on goal I assume is that there is a new way of recording. Something in as regards what CHL will do. The e sports platform, dare say???
Still very confused as I'm promised 'game sheets' by other teams we play against, but the recording is somewhat 'live' and then calculated at the end. More like greater chances of error and will that give time at the end of a game to calculate (without a rush) so the sheet can get signed off, OR is that all not happening now. From what I've heard seems a bit of a mess to me.
But if there is anyone out there who tries to access SOG with an approximate or such please get in touch.

Totally miss my point.. you said we would get tonked which we didn't.. you were wrong and not for the first time OMG I am not a god and infallible, hold the news... and for the record Pidge neither are you... As for getting tonked clearly Cardiff didn't want to embarrass us hence the backup netminder, lets see what happens tonight in front of their own crowd eh

We can't really come to all that many conclusions after just one game... it was quite obvious that we don't have a proper 'team' yet, just a bunch of players who are working up to it... there were plenty of the expected mis-passes, mis-communications and errors in positioning... but that's why we have these warm-up games.
Plenty of speed, plenty of potential skill, plenty of effort... all of those were evident, so basically - I'm happy (as happy as you can be at this stage).
Cardiff are ahead of us in the preparations for the season, and it showed... their teamwork was far superior. They play with an edge (I confidently expect that their fans are going to have to ret to defend some physical actions this season, instead of constantly moaning about everyone else's... wait, no - they'll just do more of the latter!), plenty of ability - they are surely going to be right up there in the leading pack. And anyone who writes off Murdy as 'just a backup' is a fool... he's gradually been getting better and better this last couple of years, and I'm sure that he will be able to hold his own against any opposition when called upon. Cardiff potentially have the best goalie tandem in the league.
I was quite heartened by the way the whole Panthers team reacted well and worked hard at both ends of the ice... the defence shows signs of being much better than last season, which should help Carr (can't really make many judgements about him yet).
Overall? - yep, job done last night, keep on moving forwards.

This contravenes rule 2 of the forum. Added to the trolling earlier on (rule 3). Have a week off. If anyone needs reminding of the forum rules the thread is permanently stuck on the top of all sub forums.

Not sure if Spik has had all the info but Devils took two penalties, one for too many men, Duggan for slashing, for Panthers, Herr sat two minutes on a tripping call. Shot count 27-14 in Panthers favour. Good game, I`m sure Devils will play with more intensity when the season starts but they have had a months preparation, already played two pre-season games, and most of our players met for the first time last week. We looked like a team and it is clear that Doucet and Matheson intend to deliver on the promise to play fast, exciting hockey. The moaners will always find negatives but I`m looking forward to the season. We need to stick with the programme and, as Doucet said, build a culture and team identity, even if it doesn`t deliver trophies immediately.

Overall a good start. I will say that i thought Devils didnt look very sharp, and were pretty toothless upfront for large parts of the game. We will have to face much more firepower from them over the season.
Its far too soon to make any sweeping judgments yet but a few things that caught my eye.
Positives: Connelly - The guy looks class. Seems to always have an extra second on the puck. Positions very well definsively. Clearly is looking to make that long fast pass up the ice, if guys very on his wave length that will produce goals.
Deutsch - Was my puck for hidden gem when he signed and first immpressions loom good. Skates very well and looked very solid.
Fick - Not as obviously classybas the first 2 but seems to be a really workhorse. Never got himself in trouble and battled really hard.
Golovkovs - Easily my pick of the forwards. Really fast hands, and looks like he can go round a player. If he clicks with some lines mates could do some damage.
Ollie, kelsall, hazeldine - They were given an opportunity to show what they can do and took it with both hands. Really impressed me. Great effort levels and forced multiple turn overs.
Effort levels - team worked hard. Good to see.
Match night pesentation - new scoreboard is great. Love that we have replays.
Negatives: Faceoffs - We didnt win many cleanly at all.
Lepine and Tetlow - Thought they had a shakey night. One section of play they made a right mess of and just couldnt clear the crease. Not sure thats a long term partnership id be happy with.
Physicallity - I thought we were consistently out muscle in 1 on 1 battles. And there were many times guys could of take the bady but didnt.
Its still super early.so everytjing with a pinch of salt. But overall not bad

You are almost as old as I am Pidge you have seen the great Durham throw games before even in playoff and league games, I am NOT saying Cardiff threw the game but seriously its pre season they are here to get match fit as well just as much as the panthers are and I am absolutely sure that Lord does not want to give anything away before the season starts in earnest so really how much "effort" and "determination" were we really seeing from the red machine? As for the dumb comment, well, to be honest expected more from you and to be clear exactly how many degrees do you have, i'm pretty sure i'm one up... here...

There's no way should Cardiff be coasting or messing about in these games. They play Mountfield in the CHL in 12 days time and its only there 3rd game. Surely they would be trying their hardest to gain match fitness and chemistry going into the CHL which I'm sure they'll want to make an impression in?

I don't think they took their foot off the gas really. Numerous players displayed their frustrations at times, Devils threw some decent hits and played with an edge you wouldn't expect in a measly friendly. They played aggressive and we never really retaliated which in part frustrated me, but we kept playing our game and as a result we won, so happy days.
I was happy with the performance. I was impressed with the Kelsall-Betteridge-Hazeldine line. They forced many turnovers in brilliant positions, got a few good chances and never gave anything less than 100%. Great to see. Matheson, despite being relatively slow showed some class on the blueline, I think he's going to be a great guy to have as player assistant.
I don't have any real complaints, I would like us to be more physical though, Jakobs and a couple of others kept getting hit hard and they clearly didn't like it. I can see it wearing us down if we don't push back a bit. But besides that, impressed and hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here.
