I agree with you there about plus/minus v minutes played. It’s very strange,Spangs plus/minus was very good yet the fans didn’t take to him. However Brisbois’s plus/minus stats were poor yet I don’t think I’ve ever read anything derogatory or critical about him. It would seem that either nobody in the stands takes any notice of plus/minus stats,or a lot of Panthers fans don’t actually know what they’re talking about. If say we had a tough guy who lost most fights and his plus/minus win or lose fight stats were minus 20 would the fans think he was any good ? Mmmm I doubt it....then again ! but +/- isn’t solely dependent on a players performance, a defender could do everything right but the goalie could let a soft goal in or a forward could be puck watching and lose his man and he would get a minus on his stats even though it wasn’t his fault Ive got to the point where +\- is a meaningless stat to me. It tends to get whipped out by someone when its supports their argument. But generally its a terrible way of evaluating a player in my experience. Many players have come with terrible +\- and been good and many have come with great +\- and been sub par. Also its easy to see how bad the stat is because how much variance it can have on the same player over many seasons. Does a players ability varry wildly up and down season to season? No. But the stat can, so for me its has very little if any correlation with player quality.

Corsi is the stat to use if you’re into analytics.

Corsi is the stat to use if you’re into analytics. Let's get the EIHL crawling before we run a 4 minute mile, eh? +/- can vary wildly, yes. Alex Ovechkin is a prime example. 2013-14, 79 points, -35. Year after, 81 points, +10. That said, the whole team were much poorer the first season. A team that scores a lot on the PP, but is relatively poor at even strength will have a poor +/- in general. Doesn't mean they're all poor players. It's not the whole story, but it's not meaningless either. Spang was very good at keeping the opposition from scoring when he was on the ice, 2 seasons running. Clarke was very poor at that, 2 seasons running. Gotta love numbers...

But even then its flawed for individual player analysis. However at our level where there clearly isnt that infomation avaliable, its a useless way for assessing a player imo.
