According to doug, who presumably watched him more than any of us, he was on limited ice time, you couldn't accuse Corey of not playing Betteridge, he had plenty of TOI. Also worth noting he got the same goal tally as Rob Farmer, and outscored Lacho (not surprising) and Clarke. Shuff might be puffing it up a bit, but Nottingham hockey would do exactly the same if one of ours managed what he's managed. Not knocking the lad,I hope he does well and good luck to him. You hide it well.

I don’t want to put a dampener on Liam’s achievement and I know he’s got time to grow, but you’d think at this point he would have had more of an impact for Sheffield if he has the ability some people believe he does. In reality he’s been a depth player for Sheffield this last season, he’s been given the ice time with Sheffield’s more established players and he’s done ok. I don’t know if I’m being harsh but does it warrant it? You’re not being harsh there. Spot on actually. How many games did you watch him play in?

He did have an impact for the Steelers, relative to the ice time he was given. Had he been on a REGULAR line all season, he would have been top scorer! Watch now for Kieran Brown because he will score for fun IF given a regular shift and could overhaul Kirk. In that case then why do you think Thompson didn’t do it? That's a question that really doesn't need to be aimed at a major Thompson critic. You could ask why didn't Thompson do a lot of things. What he did season long was utterly baffling to me and many others. The way he treated his "juniors" was ludicrous. Playing Shudra in defence for the first time in his life, because of his name I assume, and leaving him on the bench most games, even when we were rubbish and had nothing to lose, chucking Kirk on for a couple of shifts here and there, hardly playing Brown at all (too young) when he'd been regularly playing with and against seasoned adult pros in the ENL, even at one stage being third in the scoring stats. These lads are good in spite of Thompson not because of him.

I remember at play off final weekend a good few years ago we sat right behind Coventry’s bench and they played Newcastle in the final. Calder,Carlson and Clouthier etc were dead on their feet and he killed them shift after shift, but he never iced the two or three young Brits he had. I even shouted to Thommo about it and several times he glared back and uttered a few expletives. They subsequently lost ! 🙄🤣

For me Liam Kirk is one of the most naturally gifted British hockey players I've seen having watched & covered him a few times over the past couple of years. I agree with Doug that he has been criminally underused by Steelers as I personally felt he was more than capable of holding down a spot on the top two lines of their roster.
It's worth noting that Kirk has been a part of three GB squads this past season, was deservedly player of the tournament for the U20's in Dumfries, was captain of the gold medal winning U18 side and led them superbly, then was part of the victorious senior squad in Hungary. You have to be a pretty special player to do that.
Furthermore, he carries a very mature head on his shoulders, is fiercely ambitious and has the determination to achieve his dreams. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him playing in the NHL in the very near future.
The good news is I expect he'll be the first of a few players from these shores who will be drafted in the coming years. Keep an eye on Kieron Brown (who I feel is more than capable of playing top line EIHL hockey) and Mason Biddulph. I expect both to follow in Kirk's footsteps and be drafted.

All last years at home and a couple away. Didn't think you came to Panthers home games? I’ve had a season ticket for 17 years and missed about ten home games in all that time. Havn’t renewed it this year though so other than maybe the odd game I won’t be there this coming season.

Last season was the final straw for me.

I do watch some NHL, nowhere near as much as some. But I have followed Kirk’s career closely over the past couple of season’s thanks to work. IN MY OPINION, I think he has a shot of making it.

You might have seen Kirk quite a bit but have you watched the guys who have just been drafted, take round 1 for example who Kirk will stack up against. P.s. it's not a dig I'm telling you how it is! Unless he doesn't put on in the region of 35-40 lbs of muscle then he won't survive in the national hockey league . Kirk is 157lbs, Filip Zadina Who we just drafted at 6th Overall is 196lbs and he's a forward!!

I honestly feel, as stated in my other post, that Brown could/should be having at the very least, regular third or second line shifts. Remember he is only just 17 years old! Physically, he can hold his own, as can Kirk, even though he is lightweight! They are two serious prospects if they are utilised. Thompson will find a way to ruin them. I'm interested to follow the career of Shudra also as I expect him to get regular shifts at Milton Keynes.

So let me get this right. Thommo sets up “a youth academy” and gives these kids a few shifts in the EIHL. Then if they are any good the kids bugger off to North America. Am i missing something here, how does this benefit Sheffield Steelers ?

This thread is bordering on embarrassing. I'm all for constructive negativity but this is something else at work here.
Good luck to Liam, long journey ahead but hope he smashes it.

He'll remain in Arizona for the rest of the week and then could possibly fly up to Toronto and make the short journey from there to Peterborough to meet their management. Peterborough I'm 99% sure will make him and offer and then it's down to him, if he accepts he'll be playing OHL hockey next season. He does have offers from Europe to consider though, but the best option would be the OHL without a doubt. The Pete's have quite a few former Steelers in their coaching department so Kirk should feel right at home. Fingers crossed for him. I too feel he has NHL potential but piling on the muscle is an absolute necessity if he wants to keep the NHL dream close by.

While I agree that Kirk could ice for an NHL team someday, I don’t seen him making it till his mid 20’s. As he’s effectively two years behind many of those drafted in the CHL draft as they are often 16 and the natural progression is to play 2 years, get drafted and then work your way up.
