No, but does Gary know that? I very much doubt it. We signed arguably the biggest name in enforcing and our average crowd went up on the previous year by,wait for it.....15 Haha 😂 One day it'll catch on that results bring in crowds... how many times now have CC quarter/semi final games attracted circa 2000 people? They weren't that low when we were heading for the Grand Slam! Even as a season ticket holder, the last 10-15 games of last season I could not have cared less being there or not... it's certain if I'd not prepaid then I wouldn't have attended even half.

I was bringing some friends to the games last season, foolishly, for their first real season and they loved McGrattan. One of them has even bought a season ticket next to us for this coming season. I didn't want to ruin it for them and point out that he's not a very good player, hardly back checks and is poor defensively but even if I had they wouldn't have cared anyway because he was the guy for them. If only they could have experienced some real Panthers greats in their first season! You do need tough guys, mainly for the calming aspect, but they definitely sell tickets. When we first started watching I'm sure we felt the same, after all the years of watching your views change on what is needed.

Thing is wgray, when we all first started watching there were fights, how many do we actually see these days, and even more so how many do we see between the big blokes signed up because that's their thing?

I agree we need someone younger and eager to do the role, Paquette who Coventry have signed will be the sort of player we should be getting. He will be coming here wanting to prove something, to fight and win, which is what we need, plus he will contribute some points.

Still need an enforcer type player but one who can actually play too. Still need that protection from some of the more physical teams. Also adds to the energy. Sign no protection and watch the injuries mount up stronger physical teams will hit us

Much as I liked Cam, and could understand why they signed McGrattan to replace him, I hope this is now the end of the expensive ex-NHL enforcer/ticket seller signing. I think there's even a debate to be had about the need for an enforcer at all, tbh. Best of luck to Big Ern for the future of course. we need an enforcer for sure. To not have one would be dumb in my opinion. A Leigh Salters type is what we should be looking for, can play and put up points but also drop them when needed. McGrattan WAS a Salters type. Except tougher and a better player. Even shared Salters penchant for total disinterest...

Mcgrattons attitude was shocking.
The best thing about this is that it's not dragged on and he's signed only to U-turn 3 days before the first game !

the thing is though if its about numbers one of the biggest attended seasons panthers have ever had we weren't particularly successful on the ice either but boy did the opposition go away with bruises.. the likes of Nieckar, Clark, Allison, Wood and even the taubert and the skills of the likes of Jinman and Cadoote as well as Paek made the team worth watching.. that year the balance wasn't quite right but the fans still attended in numbers and the team were unpredicatable and tough as an old boot..

And they were entertaining. Most of them looked like they cared. Mcgratton at times looked like he couldn't give 2 craps.!

I got the impression McGrattan thought it was all a bit beneath him.

Aim for a tough guy who will put up medium numbers. Spend the big money on goals and assists.

My only memories of McGrattan will be that "Fitzgerald goal" and him skating up and down the blue line at warm up over and over again, tapping the puck back and forth to himself with a grumpy, miserable, disinterested look on his face.
Basically,he did exactly the same thing as a four year old mascot at every single game.

I don't blame him one bit, I certainly would'nt fight for players that were out on the lash, or who did'nt give a toss.I believe he got disinterested with the whole set up.

Effective for what his role required, held on a leesh i feel but we can do better with the money he'd had been on, maybe a couple of tough guys with well rounded games will be an answer.
Still will remember his goal in the QF as one of the most hype moments so far in that building.

Exactly... who wouldn't feel the same after over a decade protecting players in the NHL who bust a gut each night?! It's human nature to start getting annoyed, no matter who you are, when you sink a goal or two, grab a couple of points & invariably get benched every 3rd period. He must have sat watching the likes of Lawrence, Carter & Lachowicz thinking where it'd gone wrong!

Mcgrattans main problem was that he followed Jansen, who was perfect for this league. Mcgrattan did ok in a poor team. If only he would have finished with a bench clearence against steelers, he could have been a folk hero.
