Great Britain have named a 28-man squad for a training camp and two matches against Poland ahead of this year’s World Championship (Division 1B) in Belfast.
GB will play games against Poland at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham on Friday 14th April 2017 (7:30pm) and in Coventry’s Skydome on Saturday 15th April 2017 (1pm).
The squad will be cut to 23 ahead of the World Championship, where GB will face Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Netherlands and Japan from 23rd to 29th April 2017.
There’s a first-call up to a GB squad for Fife Flyers forward Brendan Brooks.
Head coach, Pete Russell, said: “We are delighted with our final 28 players.
“This was the toughest group to select but the coaches feel we have picked the right balance and the right group. There was so much competition across the board.
“From the Norway games we felt some guys really put themselves into the picture and that was a positive outcome.
“We have a good balance of offence and defence. I think it’s the strongest team we have selected in the two years we have been involved as coaches.
“We have been challenged to win a gold medal by the association and to do it on home soil.
“It’s going to be a wonderful experience and we need everyone behind the whole group. Let’s all pull together, be positive and believe this is our year.”

RUSSELL NAMES GB 23-MAN SQUAD FOR BELFAST
Great Britain head coach Pete Russell has named his 23-man squad who will play in the first men’s World Championship in the UK for 25 years.
Belfast’s SSE Arena will host the six-team IIHF World Championship Division 1 Group B from 23rd to 29th April.
GB will come up against Japan who were relegated from Division 1 Group A last year and Division 2 Group A gold-medal winners Netherlands, as well as last year’s opponents Croatia, Estonia and Lithuania.
There are first World Championship call-ups for Brendan Brooks and 18-year-old Sam Duggan, while Josh Batch, Luke Ferrara, Jack Prince, Zach Sullivan and Ross Venus are released from the squad.
Liam Stewart is set to make his first World Championship appearance after being named in the 2015 squad in the Netherlands, but had to pull out because of injury.
Evan Mosey will fly in from North America this week to link-up with the squad for the rest of the training camp, before they depart for Belfast on Thursday.
GB warmed-up for the World Championship with two games against Poland this weekend, with the Poles winning 4-1 in Nottingham on Friday before Britain won 5-4 after penalty shots on Saturday in Coventry.
Russell said: “Cutting the squad is never easy but I believe we have a fantastic 23 players who want to create some history next week.
“We have great balance across the squad and I think we will be very competitive.
“We know that the aim is the gold medal and there will be pressure on us to perform, but I believe we have the right group of players.
“The players will experience something a generation of players haven’t been able to do by playing a tournament on home ice.
“Everyone is so focused and excited about the challenges ahead.”

How fit is Bowns likely to be for this?

Steve Lee & Lacho (probably others) can literally do no wrong.
Both spend a season gifting away goals, barely putting in a decent shift most nights between them, yet get regular minutes for the Panthers night-after-night. Then an automatic place on the GB roster - I was there on Friday but not Saturday's game, and Lee & Lacho (despite an assist) were appalling!
Josh Batch - key component in a dominant Cardiff team that swept the league, Challenge Cup and all the way to OT in the Playoff final... as well as in the team that conceded least overall, best PP and 2nd highest PK... not good enough apparently.

How has Josh Batch not made the final squad? Donkey Phillips has! Questionable decision to put it mildly. Surprised at Jack Prince missing out too.

I'm shocked Jack Prince was cut, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

In terms of the league season, and the +/- stats that I've been keeping, appearances can be deceptive. Yes, Lee's made some howlers, but he ended the season as a + player for the team, in front of Waugh, Moran, Dimmen, Farmer, Sertich, McGrattan, Betteridge, Clarke and Lacho. He was second on the whole team for total + scores, being on the ice for 48 even or short handed goals scored (behind only Spang) but also 3rd in - scores, behind Sertich and Spang. He certainly was in the game the seaosn just gone. Lacho had 28 +s (including 11 in December alone) but 34 -s, spread pretty evenly. I agree, Josh Batch can consider himself very unlucky if he's been overlooked on playing grounds.

Depends quite a lot who you're generally playing against though Bob. Lee playing as a number 5 or 6 Dman probably played against opposition 2nd or 3rd lines more often.
Doing that you should in theory anyway,be less likely to concede a goal than if you were one of a top D pairing playing against a top line of Roy,Fretter and Armstrong for instance.

Given that Lee logged a lot of ice time, that does not really hold any water.
He is in exactly the same boat as Spang. Too much ice time generally leads to fatigue and turnovers.
Both have been criticised more than Dimmen and Waugh.

Also Corey seems to be against line matching. Its purely the next line up. At home games, quite often we have sent out our 5 before the opposition.

I have no data about who Lee was scored on by, but the fact remains that Corey puts him out there in all situations, as evidenced by the fact that Lee co-led the Panthers with +6 on goals scored with a pulled netminder behind him. Maybe next year I'll record who on the opposition scored the goals the -s were recorded on.
