www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03l7zl0I know it was mentioned on the game thread but I know I'm not the only one that doesn't read them and I feel this is pretty momentum and deserves highlighting and discussing.

Have seen it elsewhere ebut I agree it doe seed it's own thread.
About time BBC took notice and it's great they are showing it live for everyone to see. If the viewings are high I can see this being done by them more often.
I'll be there but for those who can't make it it's perfect.

I've written a new article for The Cat's Whiskers about BBC Sport showing Sunday's Challenge Cup final live on the BBC website. wp.me/P6zbpB-gc

If it's on the red button channel, yes. If not, no.

Not on the red button now. Just the website according to latest press release. What they playing at? So if not on Red button it's just online and not available to as many people now. What was a probable interest to new folk will be missed now.People with no Internet for sure.

In fairness to them, I don't think they've ever said it'd be on the red button. I presume there's a big difference between the BBC streaming something online, and broadcasting it to one of their sub-channels.

I can see why they've not announced this until three days before the game, viz. they don't want everybody staying at home and watching an empty arena online, but am I permitted to find the timing slightly cynical? It would have been useful to be aware of the online option when making a decision to buy tickets, commit to travel arrangements etc.

Surely unless there's big mitigating circumstances, no one would want to watch a cup final at home?! Panthers play in a final and I'd be there regardless.

Unless of course you want a hockey fix when your team is playing away from home.

nate24's original attachment showed an advertisement saying Red button and Online though. To be fair the advert has a banner saying 'red button and online' but that's just the websites section and covers both element. Guessing some of us jumped the gun.

Im gonna try and critise this as constructively as possible.
Firstly I don't want to take away from a fantastic prrformance from Panthers and the fact it was an enthralling game.
However the coverage let the game down. I also don't want to turn it into an anti Steeler post.
The biggest positive suggested to come from BBC coverage was the exposure to the greater public.
I fail to see how this was achieved.
It wasn't on any TV guides or advertised by the BBC. It was also not the easiest to find the link from the app/website. How many people actually click the red button(It was there on some networks). How many people go to the bbc app and look at whats on?
I ask you to think. If you were not a hockey fan would you have known about it. If you didn't visit the Panthers or Elite website, visit fan forums, follow the sport on social media would you have known about it? Maybe a few may have stumbled across it but how many would have chosen to watch it.
My next point is the coverage itself. The quality of the picture was pretty poor(and I tried a few different ways to watch). In fact i've seen significantly better quality webcasts and from Sheffield too. To be honest it was just a webcast done by the elite league with a few extra cameras and played through the BBC. There was no actuall punditry with guys on camera. It was just the 2 commentators talking over an image of the ice. Aside the interviews. Then there was Thommo. Trying his best to be impartial, and although I don't think he was too bad(he wasn't great either) his heavy breathing and blowing down the mic was aweful.
They should have probably also thought about having the larger Panthers poppulatuon opposite the main camers to make it seem more full.
In summary I don't think it did the game justice. The question I ask is what did it achieve for either organisation?
The answer is simple for me. Very little for the Elite League and if anything it tarnished the BBCs reputation for quality as a top broadcaster.
For it to truely benefit the league it needs to be an actual TV broadcast on Free to view TV with at least semi proffesionals involved in the production. Im even tempted to suggest i'd have prefered Premeir Sports coverage. And I can't stand the amature job they do either.

It was on the front page of BBC Sport website, I'm not really sure what more they could, realistically, be expected to do on the advertising front?
Agree about the quality of the video, not helped by Sheffield's low camera position for me. I wondered if that was the internet connection I was on but doesn't sound like it. That was pretty surprising, but I'm not sure what the BBCs involvement was, was someone else doing the production?
Thought Seth & Thomo were fine, all got a bit Steelers TV in one break but I guess filling 45 minutes (in the end with the OT break) of chat isn't exactly easy, and Owen's bench reporting did lean toward the Panthers quite heavily.
PS suffers the same problems you mention this did, except it's not free and the potential audience is minuscule in comparison.

I don't think there is a lot more they could have done. Im sure they tried their hardest to get the best out there they could. Just feel it didn't probably achieve what they hoped it would. I think it was the correct way to go. Certainly is the right call to go away from PS. The production was no better though. The only reason I mention PS is the fact it would have been a better quality image. Just think the whole thing didn't live up to what it could have been.
And don't think it was worthy of the hype it got. The danger is it could damage the relationship with the Beeb by putting out such a poor quality product.

To be honest, it wasn't great. The streaming quality was worse than, say, a Coventry webcast, and Thompson and Bennett were far from impartial, which is just crazy given that it was BBC and they're grown men. Owen was good and is a talented chap, but he had a tough job trying to interview the players when they were just desperate to celebrate - nothing he could do about that though!
What summed it up to me was when Mosey scored and rather than showing the celebrations, they instantly went to the replay of the goal everyone had just seen. I mean, have you ever seen the Premier League coverage not show the player celebrating and instantly cut to a replay??

From a neutral POV I felt they should have added a PP timer, after seeing the PS coverage I'd say they were both even in terms of poor picture quality.
I was skipping the period breaks to keep an eye on the Tennis so couldn't comment on that. It was always likely to be a Steelers love-in despite them not being in the final.

My picture came up with a msg saying 'this feed is switching off 'soon', you need to start again. I did, and guess what, I missed the GWG.The coverage/commentary was poor, but then again the BBC didn't have to show it, so I'm grateful they did. and the coverage didn't affect the result. And fortunately (or unfortunately) 95% of the sport viewing public was either watching Man U on Sky, or Andy Murray on the BBC / Eurosport. I'm more surprised that Radio Nottingham didn't do a commentary, given that they offer live coverage of every Notts County game, and Panthers must average a higher home gate than County.

The picture quality was terrible to be honest.
And why on earth can they not film from centre ice in Sheffield ? It was very hard to see the puck even at the near end for the camera, once it went over halfway you were just watching the players skate around with an odd glimpse of the puck now and again.
Must do better,a 4/10 at best,I can't see that BBC spectacle encouraging many new fans to attend a game and it wasn't the games fault.

We kept losing it in the Legends pub...but eventually it was ok but gave us a fright by nearly going off with 4 minutes to go.

I watched some of the game while I was on my breaks. However it should have been easier to find on the BBC Website. On the search engine, I typed Ice Hockey and Challenge Cup however all I got was the I Player section and that no footage was available. Luckily I managed to find it somehow.
Maybe next time the live link should be on the Elite League Website for easier access.
