After watching the highlights of the steelers flyers game last night is cowen the worst referee in this league. Ive seen him a couple of times myself and he has been awful every time ive seen him. He seems to get hardly any calls right and causes lots of games to unnecessarily get out if control. You also hear nearly every week about be complaining how poor he is. It makes you wonder whether the elite league has any kind of performance review of the refereeing as surely its not fair on paying fans and players thats games are being ruined by poor officiating. I often have a moan about the likes of hicks etc but on a whole they do a pretty decent job, but cowen seems to get away with it a lot of the time.

He's probably not a qualified referee.
When you make little if any investment in this basic requirement of the professional game, you get what you deserve.

The Fife players completely lost their discipline. It's easy to blame the referee ( Cowan is poor ) but that is just an excuse. Most of the penalties were fully deserved. Nickerson was a complete idiot and deserved to be chucked from the game. Some team player he is!!

Hardly an unbiased opinion Forney from a fan of the team that benefitted to the tune of what was it 3 x full 2 mins of 5 on 3?...

From what I saw of the Flyers complaints they were more to do with what he didn't call against steelers rather than what he did call against flyers.

I probably saw one/two calls he maybe got wrong for them and one call that was blatant that he missed on us. I'd think that's probably par for course in most games in the EIHL.
I'd say that the Fife fans bleating about it are hardly unbiased either. If they can't see that Nickerson (to name one) let the team down then they are just blinkered.

Whilst I agree with that, Loosing teams see games differently from winning teams, Officiating this year has been of a lower standard. My biggest complaints are 1. What is called as hooking in 1 period by 1 team isn't necessarily called as hooking in the 3rd for the opposition. 2. Death Match Overtime. I think you have to decapitate someone to get called a 2min penalty at times With the revelation that teams can "opt" to pay for the 4th official, it hasn't improved officiating. Now it seems worse. What is called at one end of the ice by this official, is not called at the other end.

You see it in Soccer - what is a foul outside the penalty area, is not always a foul in the penalty area. In hockey, its often said referees 'swallow their whistles' towards the end of close games, and especially in OT, even in the NHL. Whether its right or wrong is a different question. But I wouldn't criticise EIHL refs specifically for that (although I haven't seen an EIHL game this year, mind.)

The problem I have with the officials in general in the EIHL is that they are far too quick to bin players for minor comings together or niggly things. I don't know about the ref's down south but in Scotland, they seem far too eager to bin players for the minor pushing and shoving you see in front of the goals. All the stupid niggly penalties just interrupt the flow of the game. If they keep it up we're going to end up like football where players are embellishing fouls to get a penalty. PS.
