news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/2929163.stm it's an old article but states on there he was heading to play in Germany to push through his passport due to his father being born there. Can only presume due to the length of time he stayed there that the application was successful. making the same presumption about Elfring as he stayed in Germany for 9 years. Pretty sure it was confirmed somewhere at the start of the season that they both qualified but can't find that - may have been on twitter. However - Saurette and McCutcheon are both on the injury list so it doesn't really matter at the moment.

Definitely a wait and see signing, NHL or not. The refs over here do not like physical play, and I would be suprised if he troubled the scorers much.

You don't play that many games in the NHL if your only ability is to hit people. He will get points.
If the Giants wanted an enforcer they could have got one a lot sooner, and I imagine a lot cheaper.
It is a very good signing, and shows that alongside how close Devils were to getting Bissonnette, that we are most certainly not the beer league some claim.

He has the same points per game in the AHL as Bruce Richardson who scored at over a point a game during his time in the EIHL. I would be more surprised if he didn't trouble the scorers.

Crazy, i was only watching this guy play in calgary last season.
If the Flames dont offer you a contract and you go across Alberta and have a try out with the oilers and even THEY dont want you.
Its probably time to leave the NHL. haha.

With the quality of this signing, I hope Belfast don't win the league,if they do I can see the league folding. Now where have I heard this remark before?

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat and say well done. This is one of those times. Can't agree with that mate. I would never say "well done" to a rival team for signing a good player. In fact I wish they would all sign very poor players.

It always amazes me that when a team that's not you own makes a signing, how quickly people are to try and find problems with that signing. It would be a completely different reaction on each individual teams forum if Westgarth signed for your own team. I have to admit to being very surprised, but also very happy to have signed a player directly from the show, and regardless of him being a 4th liner there he will surely put up numbers here. I am almost certain that most if not all the teams in the Elite league would have loved to have made this or a similar signing. It surely shows that our league is becoming more attractive to much better players, and we should all be very happy that this seems to be the case, and that this can only help improve our league, and raise its profile even further. And amazing how quick fans of the team that make the signing are to check out what fans of rival teams think. Of course opposing fans will play it down and try to find the negative side, it would be exactly the same on the Giants forums if Panthers or any other EIHL team made a good signing. Same with every team, in every sport. If you don't want to hear criticism and negative comments about your team and its activities, I suggest you don't read other teams' forums. Incidentally the other post about spending big, winning the league and the league going belly up is simply an ironic repeating what fans of other teams were saying when Panthers splashed the cash in previous years. So no need to get your knickers in a twist over it.

So when Sheffield and Nottingham make high-end signings all is right with the world? :-\ All teams sign the best they can get, just like Panthers did with the side that won the league a couple of years ago....and the sky didn't fall in then did it? Just like Steelers have done this season. It has also worked against teams too. If we can attract this kind of player to play in the Elite league, we should all be looking at it as a step forward, not as the route to distruction. Whoosh....

As for this reply, read above response as you are the main one that be littles almost every post that isn't your view (including against you own teams supporters too) My comments were not disrespectful to any team or any person it was just a generalisation....but as I stated I shouldn't be surprised at some responses should I :-D Boo hoo. If you read what I put I was telling the Panthers fan who said he wouldn't trouble the scorers that he would score points at a good rate in the EIHL. Whooshed yourself this time!

I love it when rival fans have a full-on mardy and delete their comments on a thread. Really doesn't work if people have quoted them though.

When I saw the signing and subsequent thread I was really looking forward to claretgiant's forever insightful comments.
Good to see I wasn't disappointed.

Former 4th Line enforcer, wouldn't expect too much from him points wise, probably here as muscle. North America are slowly cracking down on Fighting so the need for enforcers is dwindling which is why he's signed in Belfast, that and he'll probably have some sort of Uni deal and ridiculous wage. A joke fighter (Biz) who can't even get an NHL club came here and got nearly 2 points per game. Westgarth has played nearly 150 games in 4 years...

In the last 4 seasons, Bissonnette has played 146 games, including the season of the lockout. Both Bissonnette and Westgarth have 16 points in their last 4 seasons in the NHL. Bissonnette didn't have a fight in the EIHL when he was over, i can't see Westgarth going the same way which is why i don't think he'll do wonders point scoring wise. Bissonnettes stats in the EIHL aren't anything spectacular, yes they are good but players such as Neil Trimm and Mathieu Roy have similar stats. I might be wrong, i might not but it's just my personal opinion which believes Westgarth will be too involved with the fighting side of hockey and not do brilliantly points wise.

Biz got 6+15 in 11 games playing on defence for Cardiff, Trimm and Roy are both forwards.
Westgarth isn't going to be coming over here as a slugger, unless he really phones it in I think he'll do very well for them and it'll prove an excellent signing.

Great signing, just what we could have done with. Wish we had Belfast's ambition and desire to win the league!
