I was listening to a Minnesota Wild podcast which was a brilliant 45 minute interview with Chuck Fletcher. It's on iTunes if you want to check it out.
He was asked about the wilds lack of toughness and he said it wasn't a concern. They know they are lacking but they have guys that, when the chips are down, will step up.
He also sad that they will take advantage by building strong powerplay units and hopefully capitalise on the man advantage.
In an almost zero tolerance system it actually sounds like a good approach. Corey may be thinking along similar lines. We'll have to wait and see what our powerplay looks like but it's certainly possible this is what he's done. Intentional or non-intentionally.
Chuck also agreed finding a tough guy mid season ,if it does become an issue, is fairly easy. I think it would be for us too. We may not find a tough guy that can play well but we'd surely be able to find a guy to get the nasty done. Lots of free agents out there especially in this role.
I know comparing our situation to that of an NHL franchise is a stretch but I think it's comparable in this situation.

I guess it's a case of wait and see now nate. Personally I think it's a massive gamble and one I think we will probably regret. Gaining a few minutes powerplay at the expense of players not being able to play their best due to having to constantly look over their shoulders or, worse, getting injured, seems like a poor return to me. I'm not even sure who we have who can step up if required, other than Stevie Lee.

I think the player Corey may be thinking of who will step up is Berube, I remember something said in his press release mentioning that he knows the role he is expected to play. That quite often means the dirty work, he has a few fights on Youtube and seems to do ok, however at 6ft 1 is not massive in enforcer terms, particularly looking at Edinburgh's and Cardiff's big guys, not to mention Nickerson!

Don Henley singing "American Pie" at an opponents enforcer would have more impact on a game than Brent Henley.

Remember this when our stars are being rag doll'd and injured. Plus no import limit in chl.
I'm hoping Corey signs an enforcer, I don't want to watch the Minnesota wild thanks. I would sign a Brit human shield in a heart beat

I would sign a Brit human shield in a heart beat I never said you should watch the Minnesota Wild. I simply said you could listen to a podcast with an NHL GM explaining his thoughts on toughness. It was an interesting take. I was simply starting a discussion.

Blah blah blah. Wait and see, don't you remember previous season when we've had no toughness, it sucks.
Not looking forward to when the tough teams rollinto town

I didn't start the trolling. I genuinely believe a big tough guy is the missing piece of our squad. I thought lepine would be coming. Every team in the league will be taking shots at us even worse than usual. We won't get the same protection from the officials other teams enjoy, we need to protect ourselves.

The other side to your view, dman, is that the league (i.e. Moray) put down a clear marker last season as to how the disciplinary process regarded 'tough' players, and many of these players sat out a significant number of games, or even left the league altogether.
A perceived lack of toughness may not actually help us, but may well not be a hindrance either. In any case, we have yet to see how 'tough' our team is in the heat of battle. There are at least two Youtube films of Berube handling himself very competently during fights.

I don't see what all the fuss is about.
Berube - 6'1" Cohen - 6'3" Schmidt - 6'3" Wild - 6'1" Graham - 6'6" Jacina - 6'0" Parent - 6'2" Lawrence - 6'4" Podlesak - 6'5"
We seem to have bought in quite a few guys that look plenty big and tough enough that they're not gonna be bullied and pushed around that easily even if we don't have a natural enforcer. IMO I don't think we really need one. I think a few of these guys can step up if required.

If you just youtubed our players you can see how many of them will fight if they need to. Infact I was watching one of Podlesak just a few hours ago. Our players will not be pushed around I wouldn't worry.

thats crap Nate anytime our most creative player has to sit for 5 mins for fighting of all things then something is seriously wrong...

Was happy with Robinson rushing in to help Jacina, Robo is a great fighter but i think he's one of those who sometimes has difficulty in stopping as we saw in Amiens, beat that player to hell. Wrong call made on Jacina, he was just protecting himself from the 3 players trying to get to him.
To say 3 out of the 4 fights included our better players (Jacina, Robo and Berube) we did quite well, especially having to kill just under 6 minutes of Jacina's penalty.

But the flip side to all this is we have poor officials so even the slightest thing and we are called for it. Why would we want a player thats going to be targeted by the officials. The penalties this season have been very soft so I can't see how much any tougher player is going to help us. We have proved we can handle ourselves and Robbo didnt have to go in to that fight like he did, if anything he went over the top.

Odd this thread wasn't bumped after the Fife game where Nickerson roughed us up. There's a difference between dealing with the likes of him and dropping them with Russ Cowley.
I'd put a Lepine, Salters type in this team all day.
Neilson doesn't want an enforcer, because Neilson signs the wrong ones. Nutters like Penner and Henley who have no control. Plenty of tough guys can play within our system with our referees.

We don't need an enforcer.
We just need a tough power forward to make room for the more skilled guys and fight when needed,a Salters is what we need.
If anybody see's NB please ask him why Salters is playing at Braehead this year !

But they did stick up for themselves which is my point, not saying it's good Robinson was out but the fact they were watching each others back like they did last night is better than having a non-effective line Henely taking up an import slot on the bench. In a dust off like last night you could still find players like Robinson fighting whether you have a fighter or not.

Personally I'd like to see a bigger guy at the back, although a Kelsey Wilson wouldn't go amiss.
Oreskovic would slot beautifully into this team, big defence man, team guy, did the simple things well (which is all you need). We have too many 5'11 defencemen, although which one to chop would be hard seeing as a group they have conceded the fewest goals in the league (or so I read somewhere). Maybe Landry as he hasn't really stood out as he should based on his CV, harsh I know but this is only a hypothetical situation.
Good thing about Oreskovic was that whilst he was more than willing to go he wasn't brainless and was more in the Lepine mould in that regard (Lepine was a better skater and puck handler mind you).
Saying all that with Boxill performing as he is this year and Mosey being flexible on were he can play you could probably get away with having a Henley type player in this years team.
